It's either Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs, or Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones.

I couldn't possibly say - had to pick eighty songs for my birthday party recently and slaved away for days trying to get the perfect playlist. Its the same with books, films, albums. These sorts of questions pain me :(

Don't think I could really single out my favourite song of all time. Depends on what mood I'm in, the situation etc. If I'm going on a big night out I usually whack on Flowered Up's "Weekender" or the Roses' "Resurrection"....they're both crackers and always get me fired up.

Anything on New Order's Substance is a contender as that was probaby the one single album that really got me into music. Maybe The Smiths "Reel Around The Fountain" or the Weddoes "Bewtiched" if I'm feeling a bit melancholy. Fuck, I don't know, there are so many songs.....The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun", Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane", The Fannies "Everything Flows", J & MC's "Darklands", Ride's "Close My Eyes", The Stones' "Monkey Man". You just can't pin it down to one song, it's just not possible.....is it?

Ceremony by Neworder has been one of mine for a long time. It still sounds vibrant and charged full of emotion now. It's weird that the first New Order album was so dire when you listen to the their first few singles.

Crikey Barry - you big softy... it's all bubblegum saccharine choruses with you, isn't it?

I thought that it was going to be the same song as The Squires 'Going all the way'.

Tough question - it's a toss up between Shine A Light by the Rolling Stones or Holes by Mercury Rev.

Both give me shivers pretty much everytime I hear them.

Quite possibly.... You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling by the Righteous Brothers.

Or maybe This Charming Man by The Smiths.

Or perhaps Heart Translation by Art of Fighting.

Fora long time if you'd asked me this I would have said Fat Old Sun by Pink Floyd. But I think I was naively sucked in by the hazy sentimentality of it. Still, it means a lot to me, that song.

If you asked me now, I'd be very hesitant, but I think I'd have to go for On My Own by Tortoise and Bonnie Prince Billy. It's a cover of a song by Quixotic, though I haven't heard the original. It's just a beautiful song, with very simple lyrics about wandering off on your own, walking by the road, your trainers getting soggy, feeling sorry for yourself but just taking it outside and walking it rather than giving it to the people around you. That's how I hear it anyway. It has this beautiful rolling chorus with lots of voices singing 'on my own, on my own' and big kettle drums, but they're quite low in the mix so it gives it a really warm textured atmosphere. And Will's voice is as wonderful as it ever is.

"I am far away..."

For a while, the last thing I did before my twenty minute walk to work on a morning was listen to this song.

Waterloo Sunset.. no.. Lola.. no sunny afternoon..no definetly all of them.

Each one an English gem full of fun and a sense of home, except Lola as I don't know any transvestites but it is a fun song.

Which for me would be Anarchy in the UK and God Save The Queen by the Pistols and probably Ozzie's Dream.

The best song I have ever heard for ages is Benny's Trip. Sonic Boom's remix of Benny's Insobriety by Magnetophone. I like it lots.

Ike & Tina Turner - River Deep, Mountain High. The most euphoric song I've ever heard. It sounds completely breathless, and I love how the backing music veers from completely quiet to so Wall Of Sound loud that it virtually drowns out Tina Turner's last "YEAH! YEAH YEAH!"

I'm going to cheat and go again, but it's not really cheating because my previous answer was very subjective. I have realised since I posted it that the greatest song ever written by anybody, anywhere, ever, is...

The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning.

Yes.

In our ranks there's Ossie Ardiles
He's had a dream for a year or two
That one day he's gonna play at Wembley
Now his dream is coming true
Ossie we're gonna be behind you
Altogether man for man
We know you're gonna play a blinder

Ah, the Pathetique (for that is what most people know that piece of music to be called - the second movement of the C minor sonata)...very lovely indeed, lovely, that is, but not sublime...

Can I submit a second vote? A (comparatively) recent discovery?

rez/cowgirl (from everything everything) - underworld
folsom prison blues - jonny cash
sometimes - mbv
common people - pulp
i love you to the moon and back - spectrum

One song? One song?? That's an extremely hard question, and I'd rather not think about it too much.

Some contenders would have to include :

Dion - Born To Be With You
Prince - Feel U Up
Nirvana - Aneurysm
Etta James - At last
Primal Scream - Skull X
Ghostface - Daytona 500
Miles - On the Corner
Ike & Tina - River Deep, Mountain High
Iggy Pop - Lust for life
Amerie - One Thing
Dylan - Isis

...and a thousand others.

I'd call 'Waiting for the man' and 'Oh Sweet Nuthin' for the Velvets.

I suppose it depends what kind of mood you're in. 10 Contenders:

The Longcut - 'A Last Act Of Desperate Men'
Sonic Youth - 'Shadow Of A Doubt'
Echo and the Bunymen - 'Broke My Neck'
Primal Scream - 'Rise'
New Order - 'Leave Me Alone'
Mogwai - 'Mogwai Fear Satan'
Kate Bush - 'Cloudbusting'
My Bloody Valentine - 'To Here Knows When'
Stone Roses - I Am The 'Resurrection (Live at Blackpool Empress Ballroom version)'
The Clash - 'Straight To Hell (Extended version)'
Come on now people, come on and slide with me

Oh yeah! I love that rolling bassline. RZA is a genius! I dont know if its my favorite song ever but California Soul - Marlena Shaw is fairly high on my list. I just love the production, its sounds so full. And orchestration is damn near perfect.

Ghostface - Daytona 500

Oh yeah! I love that rolling bassline. .
...which is a direct loop from Bob James soul/funk/jazz classic 'Nautilus' for anyones interest - hear that and realize how brutal that loop actually is.

'mon the RZA!

We are the G-O-D's
And we came to rock the spot
Like Ironman Starks
They be the illest MC's in the world today
Cappa, Raekwon and the R-Z-A
So listen to them clear, and put the box right near your ear
Light your blunts, sink down your beers
Cause you could never fuck with Wu-Tang Killer Beez...

couldnt leave you hanging around all alone in here, you might start to go mad taking to yourself.

I think for sheer emotion and power mine my have to be Gimme Shelter. When Merry Claytons voice cracks and Mick shouts (is it in the middle 8?) its electric. The initial notes and the percussion like the calm before the storm. And that rhythm guitar sound. Pefect, Its almost what they dont play in it that makes it so good. No wasted notes. No fat, no filler. Just sounds hanging off those amazing voices. dare I say it?

Four Tet - "Unspoken"
that's pretty interesting ...
have you ever heard an alternate version of it? apparently on the promo copies of rounds, it was different, and featured a tori amos piano sample that he could never get cleared, so the released lp version is one of those recreations-without-quite-recreating-it ones. apparently it was really great, anyway ...

Kate Bush - 'Cloudbusting'

+1

but when it´s time for karaoke I go with "love is the drug" by roxy music.

you can drink almost a whole beer during the intro and then there´s a short passage at the end (between ooo-oooh-oh:s) where you can empty the glass if you failed to do that before.

Really?

Mind you, I guess I shouldn't be too shocked. There is a sample of a squeaking rubber duckie in "slow jam"!

Has anyone see Four Tet live? Sadly, I've never managed to. What's he like?

James Carr - Dark End of the Street.

There have been so many versions of this song but this has to be the definitive one, even Dan Penn (he wrote) said so at a gig in Dublin a couple of years ago...

During my slow walk into work this morning with my iPod blasting away, i listened to James Carr - Dark End Of The Street and Otis Redding - Pain In My Heart, freaky stuff.

Listening to them early in the morning helped get me through 7 hours of boredom.

If anyone is interested in the James Carr song, i'd be happy to put up a yousendit link.
