The Ultimate Spiritualized Machine...

Post by unkle_karl »

What line-up do people think is/was the best live incarnation of Spiritualized? I was wondering this after listening to a recording of the Royal Festival Hall gig (specifically Come Together), and thought that the guitar sounded like it was beamed down from outer space. I would've done this as a poll, but was unsure of all the lineups there's been. Was the famous Ladies And Gentlemen era band the best there's been, or are the new lineup doing it for you?

(I personally think the most noticeable thing in the new lineup is that the drumming is not as strong as in Ladies And Gentlemen-era shows.)

whatever the line up was in the post Pure Phase pre LAGWAFIS US tours. Mike Mooney, Sean Cook, Thighpaulsandra(oh that name!), and I forgot the drummer. They were shit hot! The incredible amount of noise created was some of the most insane I have ever seen.

Damon Reece drumming...

Sounds elitist but the original line up, or the one linked by Will Curruthers and Sean Cook, in 1991 produced the best live music I have ever witnessed. After Jon Mattock was sacked the next incarnation was also pretty awesome, with Mooney on guitar. Despite the band now being better than most others on the circuit previous musicians made a lot more impact on me.

The current live band are absolutely awesome, and works better without horns.

The previous line up had a guitar sound (Mooney?) that didn't always do it for me.

Sean Cook was the bass player though, his playing was so good it could be mixed right up in the recordings.

Nice belt buckle too.

I've never met the guy so I dunno for sure myself but I've always been one for spreading malicious gossip and the word on the street is that he's a wanker.

Mattocks or Reece on drums, Mooney, Jason and Refoy on guitars, Dickaty on sax, Thighpaulsandra doing a Coil on keys and Cook on bass/harmonica and the current percussion/marimba chap.
That's all I need.

line up

Post by ononist »

Watching a clip of Smiles and Things'll Never be the Same from Glastonbury 1992 the other night.

Jason, Kate, Mattock (my fave Spiritualised drummer by a mile), Sean and Mark was an awesome line up. The same as played the MTV session at the time of Medication (with the addition of one horn and one sax). Definately my favourite line-up.

The rest while brilliant never sound as pure.

runcible is indeed correct, the line up of

jon mattock : 60's sonic drumkit
mark refoy : fender jaguar
willie carruthers / sean cook : fender bassline
kate radley : vox continental
jason pierce : fender telecaster

is by far the best live lineup of all that ive seen.

second to this is the pure phase line up with jon coxon and michael mooney

third is ladies & gents : cook, mooney, radley, reece, pierce,

final and least favourite:

anything with pierce, thighpaul and his rinkytinky piano sound
