Americana

Post by gimperella »

OK, i apologise for being very uneducated, but what actually is americana music? Been wondering a while and its just been mentioned on another thread, so thought i'd ask. I've googled it, and it kinda just seems like its american indie / psychadelia...but the americans still have indie and psychadelia, so i'm not sure. Cheers.
a room full of people with very different opinions may be chaos, but it is a beautiful thing

john steinbeck is said to be one of the great americana writers. read him and then you'll get a taste, also kerouac, ginsburg. listen to miles davis, john lee hooker, hank williams, staple singers etc

listen to The Band. Especially the first 3 records.Odd that a mostly Canadian band captured the American south better than most American bands.

Hey spzretznet, I grew up with an older brother always playing the Last Waltz and loving the film. He also liked Barclay James Harvest :?:

Recently, I was completely blown away at first hearing Katie Cruel by Karen Dalton. It's my favourite track on In My Own Time.

Anyone got any tips where I can find music with banjo, violin and lyrics of this quality? It says Katie Cruel is a traditional song in the credits.

sophie solomon makes very good violin led 'pop' songs. also neil young's 'comes a time' album may be your kinda thing?

i wasn't overly impressed by thr last waltz but i was impressed by the nu,mber of superstars thay had helping them ans the revelation that they wanted to be the 'honkies' but were told they weren't street enough!

Personally I think The Last Waltz is the low point their career. All the guest stars, the whole shebang was way over the top for a band who flew under the radar their whole career.

Thanks for the tips Bunny Ben, I'll check out sophie solomon.

spzretent,
yes my brother moved onto Cars, Carole King and Carly Simon after that. He's been back through the alphabet and is up to ZZtop again.
Could have been the record library that caused it(?)
Ah yes, If I had not been such a Who fan, I'd never have discovered Wings.

My brother also used to collect the History of Rock where they sent you a double-album of songs from a certain era or genre.
Anyone else remeber that?
