I just wanted to force some of you folk to live in the 2000's, possibly discover some stuff I don't know about, plus I think these types of threads are some of the most interesting.

Good topic- can't stand the attitude some people have that all the great music has been and gone.

Hmmm. The stuff that has most excited me in that time has been what most people call 'post rock'. This stuff works best as whole albums, so its hard to pick out individual songs, but I would identify the following as peaks of sorts:

Gathering Storm- GYBE
Cody- Mogwai
The Moon Is Down- Explosions in The Sky
Flames Beyond the Cold Mountain- Mono

I'd also nominate The Black Angels 'Passover' and Comets on Fire 'Blue Cathedral' as whole albums- hard to pick individual tracks.

Also agree totally with How To Disappear Completely- best thing Radiohead have done in the past decade. I'll try and think of some more...

I think its hilarious this suprisingly popular idea - particularly emphasised by the Q/Uncut set - that there was some set in stone date that afterwards meant that all music was rubbish.

At least now this date is in the 90s. It used to be thought that music ceased to be good after 1969, or 1973. Or something

...I thought the Dean and Britta song sounded nice on their myspace page, but it's sonically much richer, lusher and more beautiful sounding on the proper album - well recommended!

Indeed...at first I wasn't sure if it was just 'cause it was a new tune, but having listened to the whole album many times I just can't get enough of the droney bassline and magnificent guitar I assume Ira played; much as I like the rest of the album, Pass The Hatchet is a sublime song that takes me back to old Spacemen 3 live recordings...but with better lead guitar. That song sounds a lot like early demos of a certain band I know, but it's just too good to compare right now - personally I hope that doesn't change. Possibly best opening track for an album since Elephant Stone on 'Turns Into Stone'...of the top of my head, at least...

Totally agree- sometimes i get 'stuck' on opening tracks of albums for a bit but then get bored of them, but I still can't get enough of the fuzzy guitar of 'Hatchet..' after countless listens. The last track 'The Story of Yo La Tango' is brilliant too, less droney and with more of a sense of build-up. That album has gotta be one of the best of recent years.

There's definitely a lot of parallels between YLT and Sp3/Spz I think, they are both bands who can do the huge psych jams and the slow delicate ones equally as well.

On a similar fuzzy jam vibe, here's a mental live version of 'Blue Line Swinger'. Always thought the keyboards on this song were very Kate Radley.
