1. The Beach Boys - "Caroline, No"
I don't think anything else compares!
Some others, in no particular order:
Iris DeMent - "Easy's Gettin' Harder Every Day"
Marvin Gaye - "Distant Lover" (studio version)
McCoy Tyner - "Contemplation"
Sam Cooke - "Get Yourself Another Fool"
Otis Redding - "I've Got Dreams to Remember"
Gene Clark - "Think I'm Gonna Feel Better" (esp. as sung by Clarence White)
Leonard Cohen - "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy"
and Sonny Rollins's version of "God Bless the Child"
also, Joni Mitchell - "The Last Time I Saw Richard" (not that great a song, but there's no denying how sad it is)
...and, since we're saying "ever", how 'bout some folk tunes?
- "The Ballad of Four Maries" aka "Mary Hamilton"
- "The Trees They Do Grow High"
- "Wagoner's Lad"
- "Butcher's Boy" aka "Railroad Boy"
- "Pal of Mine"
Joan Baez did remarkable versions of all of these on her first two albums.

I'm not surprised someone mentioned that trad.
This one here ( http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF213817-01-01-01.mp3 ) by Kathleen Emery is pretty cool.

2 good choices already mentioned - My Mummy's Dead John Lennon's highly personal lo-fi classic recorded with overtones of Arthur Janov's 'primal scream' therapy. Also Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me which along with Paint A Vulgar Picture are the absolute highlights of The Smiths final album for me.
Other contenders I can think of:
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths. A tune that's haunted and enchanted me since I was about 13.
.
Take Care - Yo La Tengo. An ostensibly sad song but sung so beautifully.
Both Sides Now (orchestral version) - Joni Mitchell. A song that references so many things one can relate to in a life-affirming way but ultimately encapsulates so articulately the disappointments life inevitably throws your way.
Call The Doctor - Spacemen 3. An exquisite exposition of a tragic situation that is too much to put into words if you're in that position, but a concise and articulate description of ones thoughts and feelings when it happens, distilled down from all the other shit that accompanies such unfortunate events.
Adagio For Strings - William Barber. An instrumental exploration of tragedy, misfortune and sadness that resonates universally.
I'm Waking Up To Us - Belle & Sebastian. Stuart Murdoch has a brilliant lyrical and musical talent for combining happiness and sadness, but this very open account of the break-up with Isobel Campbell while he was still working with her in the band seems to be his cathartic response to that situation.
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who. I've got blue eyes and been called worst than a bad man in my time...but if I swallow anything evil please keep your fingers away from my throat

At least on the Spiritualized end, there's alot of weepers--"Stay With Me", "Lay It Down Slow", "Broken Heart" (probably the saddest, most melancholy SPZ song), "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space", "Home Of The Brave", "I Didn't Mean To Hurt You", "Hold On", etc. Praise the lord for the slow and majestic songs.
Edit: and I recently thought of the "top songs to kill yourself to", haha. At the top of the list was Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver". Now that's a depressing song! Listen to the lyrics, too. Man, get out the razorblades already!
A big weeper that I just thought of is Neil Young's "Oh Lonesome Me".

On the Glitterhouse 'Nevermind' compilation there's a song that goes "...you take that to be hope" at the end of disk 1 (I think it's by Shack? I'm not sure-not got any other stuff by them).
Rainer's 'The Farm' or his version of 'Time Slips Away' by Willie Nelson.
I find anything by James Blunt induces me to want to kill myself...

I was doing the dishes earlier when The Lighthouse Family came on the radio. I lost the will to live for a couple of minutes. I couldn't even muster up the power to turn it off!
They've gotta run Blunt close too.

i do hope that everyyone who picked any songs has heard of Washington Phillips. his work is by far some of the most hauntingly beautiful music i have ever heard.
i'm not gonna claim (like someone) that everything else doesn't compare or is irrelevant (now, that would be ignorant!!), i just really think the more people that hear it will get that same feeling i do.

Much of my day has been spent trying to find this imagined track.
Note to self, read back through posts...sometimes
I caught a 30sec clip of Lazycame~Bluejune on amaCon.com
any chance of hearing it in its entirety

It was actually your suggestion that reminded me. "Disco 2000" is a similar notion, expressed at least as eloquently. An exquisitely poignant, bitterly funny ("De-bor-ah, De-bor-ah"), musically irresistible song.MUFCSPACEMAN wrote:Seconded.radioshack wrote:Brilliant suggestion.

The bit I quoted is bookended by the jaded/faded/wasted rock star lamenting his condition, the middle section a rousing and poignant flashback to his youth.
Adjunct:
I see Dennis Wilson's "Friday Night" as a companion in the same vibe, a flashback to youth and the strips Dennis and his buddies had haunted in the early 60's. According to Dennis' own explanation - "That's another spontaneous song. It's a memory of when I was young and Friday night came. The white punks were out having fun. I am the white punk!"
15 years and much discontent and destruction down the line, he finds himself stalking his old stomping ground, alone this time and in the small hours, changed but still the same (the strip and him both), with vodka and orange juice, restless, scarred by life and love - "hats off to the drummer's little lady" - and heading down the path to alcoholic, coke-ravaged, brain-blown oblivion. Still the white punks play, play on.
Incredibly, incredibly sad. The difference, I guess, is that Dennis wasn't even lamenting, he was celebrating.
The passages on him from Steven Gaines' Heroes And Villains are really worth checking out, if you have an interest in Denny.
wow. that's so poigniet. could you possilbly upload that also?

bright eyes- luna
'but me i'm not a gamble you can count on me to split...'
Bright Eyes:
Well I know that is it freezing but I think we have to walk
I keep waving at the taxis they keep turning their lights off
But Julie knows a party at some actor's westside loft
Supplies are endless in the evening, in the morning they'll be gone
When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend
Get my coffee and a paper and my own conversations
I see the sidewalk and the pigeons in my window's reflection
The mascara in the evening, by the morning looks like shit
And I know you have a heavy heart
I can feel it when we kiss
And maybe men stronger than me
have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me I'm not a gamble, you can count on me to split
The love I saw in you in the evening, by the morning won't exist
You're looking skinny like a model with your eyes all painted black
Just keep going to bathroom and you say you'll be right back
Well it takes one to know one, I think you've got it bad
But what's so easy in the evening, by the morning such a drag
I've got a flask in my pocket, we can share them on the train
And if you promise to stay conscious I will try to do the same
We might die from medication but we sure killed all the pain
But what was normal in the evening by the morning seems insane
And I'm not sure what the trouble was
that started all of this
The feeling, the reasons all had run away
But the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend
But it's one way to live
Because what is simple in the moonlight, by the morning never is
Yeah, it was simple in the moonlight, now it's so complicated
It's simple in the moonlight
It's simple in the moonlight
It's simple in the moonlight
so beautiful yet so heart breaking
'but me i'm not a gamble you can count on me to split...'

If I remember correctly, the real Nancy (that is, the Montreal bobbysoxer by whom Cohen's song was inspired) was coerced into having an abortion by her much older politician lover and family, and soon afterwards shot herself.
But no matter. I suppose we've all had a friend who wore green stockings and slept with everyone, and whose voice we can't help but hear in the hollow of the night when we're cold and numb.
I'm surprised I didn't pick that one myself. Maybe I did.

A song about how many people the world over may feel like daily, or have at least looked back and reflected upon in a similar way.
The The ~ 'This Is The Day'
The The ~ 'This Is The Day'
Matt Johnson wrote:Well, you didn't wake up this morning because you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back your curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day
Your life will surely change
This is the day
When things fall into place
You could've done anything If you'd wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories
That hold your life together ... like glue
You pull back your curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day
Your life will surely change
This is the day
When things fall into place
This is the day your life will surely change.
