saddest songs ever...with an upbeat tune

Post by bunnyben »

when looking at the link that this is obviously based on i had return to sender floating in my head and was thinking the words/meaning is downright depressing...she doesn't love you anymore and wants nothing to do with you but the way that it is sung and the tune make it seem upbeat. there are probably loads

bunrn baby burn- ash is another one that springs to mind

hmm

now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie

"Disco 2000" again.

Virtually any uptempo Gene Clark/Byrds - "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", the entirely dissimilar "Think I'm Gonna Feel Better", "The World Turns All Around Her", "Tried So Hard", "The Reason Why", "Changing Heart"...

I've always found a great sadness in Sloop John B.

Sorry for mentioning an obvious one but 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is a contender. Maybe on reflection it's not the happiest song musically but it does sound a little more upbeat than the lyrics would otherwise suggest. I remember hearing it when I was young and thinking that it was a really happy song, then I learned how to read and write and speak (just about) and then realised that I'd been young and naive.

'Who Loves The Sun?' by the Velvets is another one, I'd say.

The Animals - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place

Maybe really only upbeat for the chorus, but underrated and undervalued in general so it merits a mention.

This is the worst trip...I've ever been on.

All attempts to read Pet Sounds as a narrative (and I admit none of them satisfy me) see that one the same way.
