death comes in three's

if you don't know about this man, do yourself a favor and go check out his work, simply stunning. there's a reason he worked with the best.

another sad loss.

unbelivable you people would rather expound upon richard ashcrofts guitar ability (or lack of) than give respect to one of the worlds best drummers.

i'm starting to hate this place.

i'm outta here.

Max Roach...

Jessie Mae Hemphill died recently too.

Like Lee Hazlewood. Maybe....nobody wants to think about DEATH too much.

But Max - give the drummer some

Missed this thread.

World's greatest living drummer. Now I guess it's Roy Haynes.

RIP Max. Brown-Roach Inc. rocking heaven until the kingdom comes.

By the way, the curious re: Max Roach should start with Sonny Rollins's Saxophone Colossus (1956 - recently reissued dirt-cheap)

Not that familiar of Max Roach i must admit. I do have a few tracks about the place i know, but no full albums. I've been meaning to listen to more Jazz recently but generally that tends to be more of a 'winter' thing.

Not Han Bennink ? I've seen him improv on drums with a wrapped up sweaty towel and it still sounded insane.
What more can the heart of a man desire?

alright, i've mourned.

max was amazing, going back and listening to those old albums over the last few days has been a blast. he played with soooo much. those fills those fills those fills. he added a style that hadn't been heard yet.

he was undeniably one of the greatest. i'm a little pissed at most of you right now, you know which ones you are, the big guns that know everything and yet you let this slip by with uttering a peep.

SHAME ON YOU'S!

go listen to max, if i ever took the time to figure out (even with a diagram) YOUSENDIT i would help you, but since most of you are on my shit list i'll give a youtube:

i'll stop sucking my lemon now.

What grace, elegance and control.
thanks for posting this.
I was only familiar with him as a Name, and a funny name at that.
One of you kind people shared a radio spot where Jason P. plays a tune by Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach's wife apparently, with him drumming on it. "Softly, As In the Morning Sunrise" Lovely.
I wonder though, what contributed to his decision to wear a trurtleneck and sportcoat for a series of drum solos!

He was a really sharp dresser - check out the collared shirt he's wearing on the cover of (Ellington's) Money Jungle.

Funny thing - I maintain that Max Roach is the only drummer in history that I've never confused with anyone else. (And that's saying something.)
