New Warlocks album
Somewhat embarrasingly, I've only just realized it exists after reading a review in the new Q. I assume some here will have already heard it. Thoughts?
Re: New Warlocks album
For me it's much more of a hint of older Warlocks. That has to be better than Surgery - I'm still amazed that they even released that album as it was so inferior to everything else I'd heard - really under par. I don't rate the new album as highly as Phoenix but there are some choice tracks and it's a nice listen. So Paranoid is a fantastic song - proper droney psych that takes on the UK shoegaze angle the band were so good at before.
Live they still seem to stumble from being moody and dull at one show to being up-for-it and smiling at another. That opinion comes from friends by the way - I was meant to go to York but child-minding duties ruled it out, so I ended up missing one of the most disappointing gigs of the year (by all accounts).

If any of you are new (like me) to the Warlocks you can hear the track that Runci is talking about at their homepage. Click on the music player.
In my new found verve of giving guitar music a go, I quite enjoyed it...the vocals aren't at the same standard as the music but nonetheless it holds the attention...keen to hear more so i've added the Warlocks to "the list"...
Further to this can anyone else recommend some choice guitar music of the last 10 years...i've fallen foul of the "guitar is spelled s-y-n-t-h" syndrome and only realised how far I've fallen when buying and enjoying Human League ~ Dare.
I've heard (at least listened too) a lot of the Kranky and Domino stuff any other labels with a range of acts to get my teeth into...
Some stuff (in a guitary mould) that I have and enjoy already; The Birdwatcher, Flying Saucer Attack, Mercury Rev, Spacemen3*(obviously)...I guess what i'm saying is that I like a fair bit of cultivated noize but there has to be open spaces within the music to allow a bit of dreaming...

Mr. eleKtroniK:musiK ,
Please keep an eye out for my soon to be uploaded comp. Not sure if it will may be guitar overload for you, but you might find something you like! I've been going through a bit of a regression with music recently by going back to many albums i haven't heard for quite some time and giving them a fresh listen. Probably not as bad as others on here, but its bloody hard choosing a soundtrack for the day sometimes!
Anyways, comp almost done.

Re: New Warlocks album
'dreamless days' off the new warlocks lp is amazing. surprised no one else has really mentioned this track; it really struck a chord with me.
Re: New Warlocks album
Been a fan of The Warlocks for about 18 months now. Was quite gutted when I thought they'd split up for good.
The new album is definitely my favourite Warlocks album...it's taken over from Phoenix. I've had it for quite a little while now (downloaded it a month or so before it came out), and its grown and grown and grown on me.
This album is what The Warlocks are meant to sound like I think. 'So Paranoid' and 'Slip Beneath' are glorious tracks.
By the way, I do actually quite like a lot of the Surgery album. I know its a bit tamer than their other stuff, but it has got a couple of their best tracks on there - 'Come Save Us' and 'Warhorses' (thats the bonus track at the end of 'Suicide Note', and just before 'Heaven Says So').
Going to see them live for the first time ever tomorrow. Cannot f**king wait. Have no idea how they're going to fit the two drummers, 3 guitarists, 1 basisst and 1 keyboardist on the tiny stage at the Cardiff Barfly though....

Re: New Warlocks album
Human League are great. i saw them perform live for free at The Wicker Park October Fest (Chicago) last year. the whole street was jam packed and grooving. the following Wednesday (the performance was on a Friday) i met the lead singer guy at "I Love House Music" @ The Note, which is a weekly Wednesday that's been going for two years which features some of the absolute best House dj's from Chicago and around the globe every week.eleKtroniK:musiK wrote:If any of you are new (like me) to the Warlocks you can hear the track that Runci is talking about at their homepage. i've been into Warlocks from the get go. i've only missed ONE show of theirs since the first time they played Chicago. first saw them at The Beat Kitchen, which is a bar that books some really good shows from time to time. (saw Sonic Boom do the "Songs The Spaceman Gave Us" show there). the audience consisted of me and 4 of my friends standing at the very front of the stage and the opening band and a few of their friends hanging out in back. it was one of the best shows i have ever seen, they basic played an hour and a half of serious extended psychedelic jams for me and my friends that were standing up front. then after the show my friend and i bought the red vinyl Warlocks EP and when i told them that i already had the album on cd i just needed a vinyl copy they were very surprised that we were actual fans and not just some random people who happened to be at the show. so they ended up hanging out with us drinking beers.
here are some bands u might like who i feel are worth checking out if you haven't already.
American Analog Set, Asteroid No. 4 (early stuff), The Clientele, Damon & Naomi, A Silver Mt. Sushil is a little hero of mine already, Damon & Naomi are the spawn of one of my "young-years" favourite bands whilst Windy & Carl I have attempted but got caught up in the "look at beautiful coloured vinyl" without paying much attention to the music. I like the names Olivia Tremor Control and The Clientelle so I shall be offski...that-a-way...
Again thank you

Re: New Warlocks album
i love the new warlocks album- it's definitely the only record released this year that i've listened to an insane amount of times (of course, i'm allowed to listen to music at work so i listen to hours and hours of music every day). i was actually going to mention 'dreamless days' as well because it was instantly my favourite track off the new. listening to it for the first time was very interesting- the first track had me thinking 'is the whole thing going to be like this?' and then the second had me thinking 'i think it is' and then 'so paranoid' came on and i was pretty much sold on it.
i'm trying to get ahold of 'worn thin', though, which isn't on the american cd version. i've heard that it's on the vinyl version, but no one in town is stocking the vinyl. i went to see them when they were in town (missed half of their set though... quite a bummer, but at least i caught some of it) and that song was one of the most amazing things i've ever witnessed live.
i also like 'surgery.' i think that i might have a soft-spot for it because it was the first album of theirs that i bought. i went to see them right after it came out before i'd even bought anything of theirs. that was a decent show too- but this last time they played was intense- they were really into it.

Re: New Warlocks album
I went to see The Warlocks last night (my first time seeing them). It is definitely one of the best gigs I've been to this year. Christ, I've never seen so much dry ice in all my life. Could just make out the silhouettes of the band behind the mist and lights...and because we were stood right at the very front we could barely see the people around us!
All of that combined with the music hypnotized me completely. The tracks live take on a whole new sound.
And boy are they loud (depite there being only two people on guitar now).
I think the setlist went a little something like this:
Isolation
So Paranoid
Warhorses
Come Save Us
Zombie Like Lovers
Caveman Rock
Hurricane Heart Attack
Shake the Dope Out
The Dope Feels Good
Angry Demons
Worn Thin
The band wanted to play for longer but unfortunately the venue wouldnt let them. Shame. If only they'd come on earlier...
Spoke to Jenny and Bobby briefly after the gig. Finally bought the new album as well (I downloaded it ages ago) and got it signed. Was chuffed to find out when I got home that there are two extra tracks on the cd as well....... 'Worn Thin' is the last one, not sure what track 9 is called...

Re: New Warlocks album
I about knocked Jenny Fraser over on her ass before a show in Atlanta early in November...I came around a corner where the bar and show floor kind of meet I was walking & put my head up & there she was right in my face, literally, I have no idea where she came from . She seemed in quite the hurry I barely had time to mutter an excuse me and err sorry and she was gone. Other than trying to take the bassist out of commission before the show I was happy to finally be at a warlocks show and they didn't disapoint. Despite an annoying drunk fan that would not leave the guitarist alone (eventually the asshole was escorted out). Bobby was clearly frustrated yelling " I'm too old for this shit !!!" and I thought for a second I was at a BJM show but they pulled together and put on an amazing show.I always thought that the two drummer's was bullshit but after seeing them live I understand now, once they sync up it's explosive and the kick drum hit's you right in your guts. Darker my Love opened up and they put on a really great set I went ahead & bought their cd at the show and had some of the band members sign it.
I have too say the new Warlocks cd has replaced rise & fall as my favorite warlocks cd. It's one of those albums that demands that you put on your headphones & tune out. It's a strange dark journey that wraps itself around you sonically like a tightly wound cocoon. I cannot get enough of "slip beneath" and it's endless loop the unsettling creepiness of "death I hear you walking" and the gem "so paranoid" . I think Bobby just went for it creatively with this album and I'm glad he did it's a great fuckin' ride.

Re: New Warlocks album
Slip Beneath is my favorite track on the new LP. I'll admit, some of it's a bit strange and I have to wonder what Bobby was thinking for a couple of tracks. Overall, I probably like it a little bit less than Surgery. (I'm a sucker for pop music...)
Re: New Warlocks album
Went to see them friday night, maybe it was just me but i didnt really get into it until Caveman Rock, unfortunately they only did 2 more songs after that! They had 3 guitars for about half the gig and had to tone down the dry ice as they had set off the fire alarm!(same thing happened with Sunn O at ATP last week) I had seen them before about 4 years ago so i knew what to expect, the band were enjoying themselves though all smiles.
As for the new album i think its possibly the best thing they've done since Rise and Fall, their debut and my favourite, certainly pisses all over Surgery.
Still not keen on the vocals though after all these years.

I must say that the new album is fantastic. Besides So paranoid, Worn Thin is one of the best songs this year. Sound a lot like When Tomorrow Hits. It only comes with the vinyl though, so go for the LP. As I said... a great album.
Re: New Warlocks album
Just picked this up...
After only a few listens, I find it surprisingly dark and sparse for what I'm used to from them. Not that it's a bad thing. I am really enjoying this album so far. Highly recommended.

Re: New Warlocks album
Why does my version of the album (which I bought in a shop) have two tracks that aren't listed on the album artwork or in the US version of the album that I originally downloaded?
CDDB identifies the extra tracks as "On/Off Sunlight" and "Worn Thin".

Yeah, I'd completely forgotten about their update via Facebook about taking a break. Surprised that no one on here had picked up on it earlier. Seeing the Warlocks in London last November was fucking ace and I hope this break isn't a long one. Will try and check out this "new" material asap.
