I concur w/ a Beautiful Noise in saying that they are not that good ! I bought the album on the recommendation of several people on this site along w/ a favorable review of them in some music magazine. Couldn't get into them and I am considering selling the cd.

I really wish I could come up with shit like this myself.

Speaking of Wilco, anyone here like them at all? I've been reading some new book on them(cause my spacemen 3 book still isn't here) and damn if Tweedy doesn't remind me a whole lot of mr. Pierce. he's cheap, whiny, goes through band members more often then he goes through a pair of pants, and he writes some great tunes(i personally enjoy wilco live much more than on record, same goes for spz).
uncle tupelo/sp3 as well...

speaking of overrated bands (secret machines). i don't get all the hype about franz ferdinand. they sound like any other number of bands (ie they kinda suck). any opinions on this?

ps just saw wilco at bonnaroo. damn fine show. after the first song tweedy asked the audience "is everyone high?" (much applause). then he said "i'm not." (less appluase) it was kinda funny.

I like Wilco a lot, yeah. Haven't heard much Secret Machines, but I gotta say..."Radiohead, Interpol...or any good band."

That's an oppositive, right? If you happen to dig Radiohead or Interpol that's one thing, but a *good* band...quite another.

i really tried to get into wilco/uncle tupelo, actually saw uncle tupelo years ago. was not totally impressed. THEN they go off and release yankee hotel, its brilliant, and beautiful, lets just see how the new album sounds first, before i pass anymore judgement. as for wilco live, i passed on them to see BRMC, i guess it was the lesser of two evils. maybe.

as for tweedy and pierce, thats extremely funny, my girlfriend bought me the dvd uuuhhmm, can't remember the name, but in it, its makes jeff out to be the big sissy, teddy bear, momas boy type, kinda like pierce. ha-ha.

xxxshonnxxx

p/s as for franz ferdinand, well its a stretch but, i will give them a bit more credit than most. the album is pretty damn catchy, but i always make my friend change after about 3-4 trax, so whats that saying.

Hey Shonn, I think it means that the moustache/drummer combination is never a good idea, especially for fey, vaguely-arty-not-really scotchrock peddled by the likes of FF.

Most of their songs are written by their fifth member, Bubba. He dosen't appear in public with the band, due to extreme ugliness - like a cross between Brian Wilson and the Brain of Morbius...

Like Belle & Sebastian on Viagra.

No need...

WHY not try

TV on The Radio
Beach Boys - Wild Honey
Modest Mouse
James Brown - Get Up, Get on Into It

I heard the new Wilco and was impressed by how diverse it is. There is on rather long krautrocky track that was good. I own nothing by them but have loads of friends who think they are the shit. I have seen them twice and was not really impressed.

Franz Ferdinand? This years Coral. Not too many people outside the UK get this stuff. Including me.

spzretent, tv on the radio, how is that? i luv what the cat is doing with the afro/beard thing going on.

as for franz, well they are doing really well here in on the west coast, sold out tours, my friend runs a local record store (same one spaceman played in) and he says he can't keep the album in stock. as for modest mouse, all respect, they have been around for awhile, not my cup of tea, but they deserve to make a few bucks for their struggle. all power to them.

james brown, now were talking.

I have no idea about TV On The Radio. I was told I wouldn't like them. So I passed.
On the other hand All Night Radio is pretty good.
I have been listening to this ne Division Of Laura Lee Cd which is really growing on me. Except when they try to be Fugazi. The poppier stuff is great.

Yeah, they're also really going for the Neil Young guitar epics on a couple of the tracks.

What instrument in Secret Machines do you think harmarman plays anyway? Or is he their manager/producer/publicist/record company owner? (delete where appropriate).

It's the bit about 'any good band' that gives it away.

I don't know about the Wilco and Radiohead comparisons, but I think that the Secret Machines are the best new band to come around since Mogwai and their new CD is the best of the year so far. Apparently they're not for everyone, but I would imagine MOST Spiritualized fans would like them if they gave them a chance (don't pay attention to the Negative Nancys on this post... listen for yourself). I just saw them play at the Metro in Chicago and despite a less-than-capacity crowd, they put on a very intense show.

ok, first of all, this has nothing to do with spiritualized at all. seriously. What i am listening to now sounds like Pulp, blur and that mid 90's britpop crap. you remember, supergrass's i should coco, blur's girls and boys, pulp's common people. you know, right as the manchester scene morphed into well, who knows now. it's just lame. This sounds like some prog rock band begging for some kind of indie cred. You know, like queensryche playing Revolution or The individual. ugh. i'm not slagging any of the above bands, save for the reason for the post. but really, this is just sickening. now, back to figuring out what the hell a 'Merzbow" is.

i am the one who usually jumps up and down. and this time i got sucked in by Pitchforkmedia, which rated Secret Machines with 8.2.
once again - question the web, think for yourself. and enjoy the silence.

richie is right, Secret Machines atleast sucks, cheap ideas without any mood.

but "who knows what you will find if you keep on looking".

so, a little copy&paste from The Secret Machines messageboard (i just checked it out of curiosity, maybe someone was cursing Spiritualized there) and the best what i found was dated from January 27:

just got back from seeing spiritualized at east anglia uni LCR - where were u guys? according to jocky slut magazine u were supposed to be touring with them. i spent the last 3 weeks raving about u to anyone that would listen and then u weren't there! anyway, u now have a huge, rabid following in norwich desperate for that magic rock medicine that only u guys can provide, so please, please, please come to our uni.

please please please ????? no no no, no candy today, no more......

I misspoke before.

Secret Machines are the best new band to come around since The Warlocks and Burning Brides.

And I think the Secret Machines are more like a combination of Ten Rapid-Era Mogwai, Meddle-era Pink Floyd and Spiritualized Electric Mainline.

I'm surprised nobody else here is pro-Secret Machines. Funny, I figured people who visited a Spiritualized message board would be into good rock 'n roll music.

Distant Planet Is Back...

Post by distantplanet »

Greetings and salutations old members--and newbies alike. I'm back. It's been a very long time since I've posted on this board--but I could not resist the opportunity to pass on a few (subjective, mind you) musical gems that I've come into contact with recently. I see my good friends $26 and spzretent are still humming around. OK, here goes:

Manitoba (Up In Flames). What can I say...this electronica album is fucking brilliant. It is the "Loveless/Music Has The Right To Children" for the new millennia and destined to be among my top five electronica albums of all time. Buy it now!

Midlake (Bamnan & Slivercork). Yes, everyone is jumping onto the Radiohead bandwagon nowadays, but Midlake has truly got something special going on here. Toss in a dash of Beatles--and you'll be treated to a whimsical pop concoction of catchy lush melodies, interesting lyrics and dreamy soundscapes that will certainly grow on you. Definitely worth a listen. Although from Texas, they are signed to UK's Bella Union label.

White Magic (Through the Sun Door EP). If Grace Slick were a Wiccan witch, she might sound like this. This folksy slowcore masterpiece is intoxicating, hypnotic and haunting--and features Indie professionals, Mira Billotte (Quixotic), Miggy Littleton (Ida), and Andy MacLeod (California Speedway). An interesting and intriguing musical find that won't disappoint fans of the Slowcore genre.

Low Flying Owls (Elixir Vitae). Cool neo-psychedelic band from the San Francisco Bay Area. Surprised they are not more popular. Take a peak.

Lastly, I too have Secret Machine's new album. It's not half bad, but not stellar. If you like this album, check out Lake Trout's, "Another One Lost".

Peace Out,

Secret Machines?

Post by TheWarmth »

I haven't posted in a while either ~ probably due to the fact that Spiritualized haven't been up to much new recently. Anyway, couldn't help myself from putting in my two cents on this thread.

My buddy from LA was in over the weekend and was hyping the Secret Machines ("they're huge in LA" ... okay, whatever). I had already heard them (I also read the Pitchfork review) and was underwhelmed. The two songs he played me did not change my opinion. They sound pretty good, but the songs just aren't there ... they're not in the least bit interesting. I don't see what all the commotion is about.

Although this is the Spiritualized board, that doesn't mean that everyone on here will be into all bands that make half-hearted attempts at psychedelia. But then again, I'm into the new Blur album, so maybe my opinion doesn't count.

Here are a few to check out that sound nothing like Spiritualized:

Kings of Convenience ~ A Riot On An Empty Street
Sondre Lerche ~ Two Way Monologue
Lali Puna ~ Faking The Books

I don't think I've been here for a little while...it's been fucking dull lately, ce n'est pas?

Here is some more music that sounds not like Spiritualized, but which nonetheless I have been enjoying anew, greatly and recently:

Physical Graffitti by Led Zep
Primal Scream by Primal Scream (Ivy Ivy Ivy, Got you split wide open over me)
Airconditioned Nightmare 12" by 5.30
Ramones Mania (by the Ramones)
Soul Trader 12" by Thee Hypnotics
You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr.
It's Alive by the Ramones (hang in there Johnny)
Ton Up No Lid 12" by Jacobs Mouse
Sonic Youth Play the Fall by Sonic Youth
Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Anthology Vols 2 & 3 by Beatles Band.

That's right - comfort music...

Shonn ~ the new Sondre Lerche (wasn't until I saw him live that I knew his last name was pronounced "Lair-kay") album is fantastic! It's easily going to make my top 10 list for '04, unless the second half of the year if drop dead brilliant (doubtful). I highly suggest you check it out. Two-Way Monologue is what it's called.

The EP you're talking about ... is that "Don't Be Shallow"? I've got that, too.

The live show was great. I was really into it. His band, which is called The Faces Down (weird name for a band), was extremely professional and spot on. I think Two Way Monologue is much better than Faces Down, although I like that one, too.

Yes, it has been too long. Had some pressing life events that kept me away (no, I was not committed). I still visited as a lurker from time to time, but always stayed in the shadows. Things have changed a bit around here -- but I like what I see. As always, Spiritualized has a place in my heart and in my head. The music is, and will always be, part of who I am (OK, now I sound like a fucking Hallmark Card). It's damn good to be back...

Reissue of The Slider on vinyl???? I haven't seen that yet. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled, as I'm a pretty big T. Rex fan. Thanks for mentioning it.
