60s - Beatles/Stones (can't choose) - 'I Feel Fine'/'She's A Rainbow'
70s - Led Zeppelin - 'In The Light'
80s - Spacemen 3 - 'Walkin With Jesus'
90's - Spiritualized - 'Shine A Light'
00's - The Heads - 'Fuego'

Fairly easy - the songs could change on occasion though.

Hmm, kinda broad/vague ben. I'm not sure if you're trying to encapsulate English music (or the essence of) over the decades or you are perhaps giving an introduction. I'd presume the former as I'm sure at least some part of English culture will have crossed the waters.

'60s - Dusty Springfield - "I just don't know what to do with myself" (bacharach and david penned)
'70s - David Bowie - "Heroes" (alt. Philip Glass "Heroes" remix by aphex twin)
'80s - New Order - "Temptation" (12" version and not to be confused with Heaven 17 version)
'90s - Massive Attack - "Weather Storm" (Craig Armstrong version)
'00s - Gravenhurst - "See my friends" (written by Ray Davies)

Idea behind these 5 tracks is that you can dig a bit with them...you can wander through the whole spectrum of english music by using the names here...could be fun...could be dull;

From Dusty you get a kinda torch song...reminiscent of the 50's buzz with an american tinge, bacharach/david influences on English artists (st. etienne and oldfield of note) and a picture of burt appears on an Oasis LP, Bowie to Eno to AFX kinda introduces the broad spectrum of avantgarde and electronica, New Order/Joy Division, miserable manchester, escape, the bands/the times etc etc, Massive Attack includes hip-hop, soul, jazz and electronica with classical arranegemnt by Armstrong, Gravenhurst is from the folk aspect with a 60's "legend" penning the words....you could wander round n round as you desire or you could just have 5 good tunes to listen too.

I guess it's just up to what you want to say, really but I'd ditch the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Floyd, Spacemen, Spiritualized stuff IMO as there are more subtle ways to get psychedelia, folk, avantgarde, electronica etc across
Good luck and if you need any cut/paste or "treats" I'm happy to help you out.

Cheers
