Cool, I'm going to give it a go on the way to work. Their last album, Simpatico, pretty much sucked, IMO, but I've been a Charlatans fan for a long time, so I'm not giving up yet.

I liked their first hit but it's the only one I know.

Sorry :)

Much better than the last couple of albums that's for sure, although "Oh Vanity" perhaps should have "Time is Tight" placed in brackets after it as it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Booker T & The MGs tune of the same name. No bad thing though.

Having listened, it's no wonder they're giving it away free. It's the only way they'll get rid of it.

I think it's dire and bland and there's barely a decent melody in there. No groove, no soul, nothing. It's like listening to (shivers at the thought) some Hard-Fi demos. I've given up hope of The Charlatans ever being good again. It all started going down hill from 'Us And Us Only' and has only gotten worse.

It's a real shame as I still love all their stuff from before then.

I thought McGee was off the drugs? Sounds like he's back on them if he reckons this is their best album since 'Tellin' Stories. Aye, right Alan...

Well, to be fair, McGee is their manager so it's his job to talk up their new album as one of their best. I don't think it's nearly as bad as you've made out, though. I'm not going to put it on my top ten list at the end of the year, but there are some pretty decent tunes on it. Go back to, say, "Up To Our Hips" when you have a moment and let me know if you really think that that album is a head and shoulders above this new one.

I've been thinking recently about how the longer bands continue on, the easier it is to slag their new stuff off. It's inevitable that the more records a band puts out, the more people will look to their early work in a nostalgic way and in turn, not give enough credit to the new material. I think Spiritualized is in the thick of that right now.

I do not find this album amazing either. but you can hear
that old sound in my opinion that has been remixed...

"wonderland" was indie-funk, "simpatico" was dub mexican. they are definitely getting better.
the charlatans are still good, as a new order fan of course i like this one. and i felt respect to thier roots not bernard sumner rip-off.

i think the track 'cross my path' is one of their best moments but yesterday i was listening to a cd and 'toothache' came on, reminding me that the self titled album was probably their peak, (telling stories feels a bit laboured in places), for me its that album and up at the lake as defintive charlatans albums

I'm loving "My Name Is Despair", very nice. My fave albums would be: Up to our hips, The Charlatans, Tellin' Stories and Us and Us Only. Dunno where this new one ranks yet, might be a grower.

My friends...just love it...love it! Blessed we are that time and tide grant a new record from the charlies to spin endlessly or gather dust...my boys have hung in my living room seven times ..countless thousand hours in my eye soul...get together ..an announcement that the charlatans have disbanded will cite the last time the hammond has any hope of keeping me alive...forever..
