Spiritualized - Jools Holland 6th May 2008

Post by The Other Jason »

Hello,

Got myself a couple of tickets for the show this coming Tuesday. Not 100% sure Jason will be on the show but just checking if anyone else has heard anything and if anyone else is going?

Got this from BBC website-

Joining Jools live from BBC TV Centre are Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, whose album Raising Sand was one of the releases of 2007. They play a couple of numbers from the album ahead of their world tour. Making a welcome return to Later are Jason Pierce's Spiritualized, who performs tracks from their forthcoming Songs in A&E album. Twelve time Grammy winner Emmylou Harris performs tracks from her new solo album All I Intended To Be; The Fratellis made their UK TV debut on the show two years ago, and now return to play tracks from their upcoming second album Here We Stand; Hotly-tipped Brooklynite Santogold is in the studio with tunes from her self-titled debut album; and Chris Difford pops in to perform a number from his new LP Last Temptation Of Chris.

Cheers!
Jason

Hopefully not. He said something about Coachella being the last acoustic thang.

What was it like being there? They just played one track on the telly. Spaceman's gtr wasn't loud enough, but that was made up by the fact that he was standing up!!! :D The girls all looked great in white- Rachel (dark haired string player) in particular. The choir sounded fantastic during the outro choruses. So who's the bass player (maybe I was just being blind)?

Was gutted they only played one track and we had to hear the Fratellis pish for two.

By the sounds of it they are on again on Friday night's show, so will be interesting to see what they play then! :D

I know, the Fratellis?! All in all, the line up could have been far worse as is often the case with Jools Holland nowadays. I'm sure I heard Jools call T Bone Burnett -Walker (as in T Bone Walker)- funny!
I'm going to Ireland tomorrow so I'll miss the Fri show. Please, someone let me know if they do more tracks... I need my curiosity satisfied. :D

It sounded pretty much like the album version- no bad thing.

So here we saw the premiere of the new version of the electric band...

No Coxon. There are strings. New bass player (i liked his work a lot actually- nice tone, and great at coaxing noises out before the choruses).

No thighpaulsandra? Actually, did i see tom edwards on keys?

Fratellis are shite. Didn't mind the Plant & Krauss stuff.

The best part for me was Santogold's robot dancers. :)

Why are the Fratellis?

Haha! Yeah, that really cracked me up! In fact the whole show was kind of subtly humorous (I'm sure unintentionally so).

They played Soul on Fire.

Defo no Coxon and Thighpaul - and I wonder how they'll tackle some of the older, noisier stuff with that line-up..it was sort of semi-Acoustic Mainlines to me....

I doubt we'll see any Smiles/Things'll Never Be The Same type workout a la Glasto 2004. God that was astonishing at the time - on the video you can see me looking gobsmacked in the front row....

For those of you living in the US I recommend signing up for an account at http://www.thebox.bz

It's a torrent site offering only UK television, and the Jools Holland shows are normally seeded within a few hours of their broadcast in the UK.

Yeah, You Lie, You Cheat sounded amazing tonight, can't wait to hear it at Kokos :D

Should we assume tonight's line-up will be the same as the forthcoming gigs then? The sound was great and it's nice to get a slightly different flavour of electric Spiritualized, whilst retaining the essence of electric mainlines, that made You Lie, You Cheat sound perfect as an alternate finale instead of Things Will Never... or Take Me To The Other Side.

I wouldn't want to miss a raucous Cheapster though, so I hope Tom Edwards can knock one out on his organ, a lá Thighpaulsandra on the Amazing Grace tour. And I wouldn't want to miss the spine-tingling thrill that comes from that simple chiming guitar riff and the almost-whispered, gutteral first few lines at the start of the epic live renditions of Take Your Time which have graced Spiritualized gigs for so long now.
I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

It could be one to close with but equally it could be one to open with.

Initial thoughts, Soul On Fire is a lovely song. The one called Sweet Talk wasn't nowhere near as good (one or two good lines and that's it) as Soul On Fire and luckily the strings and backing vocals helped rescue it. You Lie/You Cheat slightly different but only become interesting after the vocals ended, well more attention grabbing than interesting.

Friday night played 3 tracks. jason looking feckin amazin if slightly tremulous and skinny. Wot a contrast between them and Plant and the Fratellis. Thought the Fratellis sounded pretty good then heard their single on the radio today and realised how shit they truly are. Cant get over their [spiritualized]accoustic performance n Glasgow. Cant believe theyre not doing glasgow this year. jason you are a god

it wasn't white noise though. ie it wasn't just a sheet or a wash of sound. it was deliciously controlled and channeled aggresion. Jason looked perilously close to a foot on the moniter rocking out pose too :)

true, true! How good did it sound though! When was the last time you heard THAT noise on TV? it was such a departure from everything else on the show. I can imagine some irate floor manager wibbling on about running times on the show tearing his hair out because they played the song then nosedived into that.
It really made me extremely happy to hear them play like that again. The polar opposite to Acoustic Mainlines. Roll on Sunday.

Cheers for posting that, I really enjoyed that on friday after several drinks - its great when they turn the cameras on the Fratellis who are clearly thinking "what the fuck...that's what we think we sound like"... :D

Brilliant to hear that again as mentioned here already. And only two electric guitars...get Coxon for the gigs!

It would only have been better if Santogold's robot dancers were involved in some way (her song was great the second time!)...

In truth, tracks like 'Soul on Fire' are not the reason I listen to Spiritualized. It's a bit too Jools' Holland / Q magazine, lets all read the Guardian in Starbucks on a saturday morning with the kids for my taste. On the other hand, the sound of stuff like 'You Lie, You Cheat' can be traced right back to the Spacemen days and reminds me of why this band is so important. An awsome performance and a great track which even had my hardcore math rock missus walking over to the sofa all wide eyed!

Wanna swap missus's? Mine sat watching it then said all stroppily "on what planet do they think that sounds good?". Oh dear. Of course I nutted her one straight away.

( I didn't really - that'd be horribly wrong)

I did fling that quote back at her over the weekend though, like with dinner "on what planet do you think this tastes good my love?" etc etc. She's never forgiven Spiritualized for giving her a night of hell at Hammersmith on the Let It Come Down tour. The white noise, extreme strobe effect wasn't for her liking. Hehehehe. I remember a girl behind us crying because she hated it so much, or maybe she was on a bad trip, who knows.

that was an intense night. My first time seeing the band. the strobes were so strong even with you eyes shut you could still see them. I love the fact the girl behind you just sat there crying rather than left. classic!

have you ever been to brighton? lets all read the guardian/telegraph/mail in some shitty hip hippie cafe and complain about injustice towards oneself as we trat those around us like scum... your version sounds like paradise in comparison...

now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie

Wow! It's been taking me a while to warm up to the new album, but these live performances finally convinced me, particularly Sweet Talk and You Lie, You Cheat. I'm kind of curious about the bass player myself, does anybody know anything about him? (I might be hallucinating, but that looks like one of the new Fender Jaguar basses he's playing...)

Maybe this should be in a new thread (ie your wife/husband/mates/whatever fucking hate Spiritualized) but I don’t want to start up anything too negative…

When I was a teenager I used to go to gigs all the time with a mate who I had been at school with, I took him to see Spacemen 3 at the Notre Dame Hall in Leicester Square. When we came out I asked him what he thought and he said that Spacemen 3 were the biggest bunch of po-faced boring wank it had ever been his misfortune to watch.

Many many years later a different pal had dropped by and I was watching the Glastonbury 04 DVD during the free-form improv racket at the end of the set and he turned to me and said it’s all just a bunch of knob twiddling Radiohead shit really isn‘t it?

Probably should choose my friends a little more carefully.
