Liars, Spiritualized, Grinderman, Sunn O))) (with Pansonic), Klaxons, Primal Scream, Lydia Lunch, Peaches, Julian Cope, Vincent Gallo, or Bruce freaking Springsteen, all of whom contribute Suicide covers to an upcoming EP series from UK imprint Blast First (Petite).

Each EP will take the example set by the Bruce one, combining Suicide covers by an "established" act and an "up-and-coming" act with a previously unreleased Suicide track from the archives. The 10"s are limited to just a few thousand copies (4,000 in the case of Mr. Springsteen's offering), though the EPs will be available digitally as well.

Luna with Dane Wareham has done "Dream baby dream" and did it with some nice style. thats a good choice, though i'm also having some wicked wet dreams what other Suicide songs could be in the toaster.

Springsteen? That's.....interesting. Had no clue that he's a fan. He's popped up on a few albums that I wouldn't have expected him to (Mike Ness' "Cheating At Solitaire", Cracker "Countrysides", etc).

Springsteen is one of my very favorite musicians. It can be hard to recommend a particular album because it varies a bit and often his best moments strike some as being overwrought. Nebraska is a very good start because it is toned down, shows a bit of the Suicide influence (just a bit though), and well, it's a really great album.

After Nebraska, if you've still got a hankering, try them in this order:

Darkness On The Edge Of Town (my personal favorite)
The River (the best one album summary. Bar band songs next to very somber moments)
Born To Run (Phil Spector on steroids. Listen LOUD: stunning production, great songs)
The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle (wordy 70's rock carnival music, jazzier and looser than his later stuff)
Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ (first album. Wordier, almost stream of conscious lyrics. Fully in command right out of the gate)
Tunnel Of Love (slightly dated production, but his most emotionally mature work.)
Live 1975-1985) 3cd, awesome live album

That's the best of it. Born In The USA has a lot of really great songs, but the production is all wrong. Some people love that album, but it frustrates me that the point of some of the songs is practically hidden in plain sight. Born In The USA was misinterpreted SO often, and the lyrics are right there, easy to understand. And Glory Days is such a sad song if you think about it...

All of his newer stuff is good too. The only ones that I would avoid are Human touch and Lucky Town. Oh, and that MTV Plugged live album.

Bruce is sorta like The Beach Boys. Critically adored and massively popular, but because of associations that have little to do with the music, a lot of people won't take them seriously. And in Bruce's case, a lot of it is so emotional and unironic that people don't know how to respond to it.

ah, springsteen, im a bit partial too.

although the best record to get via the Suicide connection would indeed be Nebraska, I find it slightly overrated. for me Bruce is all about the first three records.

My absolute fave is The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street- like you said, its a heady stew of jazz, soul and rock, nice and loose & sloppy in the best sense. it's a shame he never went back to that sound. The first album is in a similar vein but more folky. Born to Run and Darkness.. are chock full of great songs but their production is dated and the tunes were much better served live- which is where the excellent set Live 1975-85 comes in (even if it foolishly doesn't have any versions of Prove It All Night or Jungleland, but i suppose you cant fit everything in..)

After that Bruce's bar band and stadium rock sides come through far too often for my liking, nothing after Nebraska really tickles my fancy in a major way.

The Seeger Sessions is a riot though- a huge folk band going at it hammer & tongs.

I'm going to be collecting all of them, i am a whore for anything from Spiritualized and Sunn0))), ( i do realize i need help, i am much beyond that) and don't want to let these slip by. Oh, and the fact that Suicide is a mojor influence on what i write and what i listen too. Although the Springsteen is a little odd...

Springsteen is magnificent. Along with the recommendations others have made, I'd highlight 'Live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975' as one of his best. The super-intense, emotionally charged 'Lost in the Flood' is a revelation - the album version has nothing on this.

The Springsteen ep is out, I saw it in a store yesterday.

Almost bought it, but it's sorta pricey for three songs. And the Springsteen track is a live version, probably the same thing that's on youtube.

While I like Suicide, I don't listen to them enough to bother with their rarities.

This came out about three years ago as Fuxa Commits Suicide, it's an excellent EP.

Co-incidentally today I received a Fuxa 7" with that Sonic-Fuxa Girl cover as a b-side, very happy to get this on vinyl

I have an album of Suicide covers which was released a few years ago.. "An Invitation To Suicide".

It contains Sonic Boom doing Rock & Roll Is Killing My Life, although I think it's the same version as on the first Spectrum album.

Other artists include The Darkside, Mudhoney, Flaming Lips, The Nomads, Codeine, Luna (Dream Baby Dream) and Thin White Rope.
