bunnymen return- evergreen 'the greatest comeback ever'
spiz inform us we are all floating in space
radiohead make an interesting alum
oasis wish that we could all be here now, a bit overblown but glorious

what a great year for music
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

The '90's were, without a doubt, a brilliant decade for music and one that I think will be revisited and thought of as highly and as musically influential as the '60's were/are.

BUT....to say '97 was "the best year ever" is a mighty big claim and one that I'm not sure it is worthy of such praise. Not yet anyway. There is stiff competition for that title. 1968 wins my choice for best year ever in rock music history. It has withstood 40 years and many of the albums released in that year still sound great today and continue to influence many bands.

a lot of the time on here 1997 seems like Year Zero.

personally i think the best record from that year, and my favourite, is Time Out Of Mind.
but people never mention it on here when 1997 is mentioned, and frequently is it.
it was a big year for british indie/guitar music, but aside from one or two albums, none really deserve the hype and overall for me it doesn't seem that much more special than most other years.
and anyway, everyone knows rock n' roll attained perfection in 1974. it's a scientific fact.
gonna burn brightly

I reckon a lot of people here were just discovering new music for themselves in '97 which is why they rate it so highly. Same reason i have so much time for '88-'92.

Although I'm not sure all of these were released this year, 2008 is shaping up to be my best year for music in living memory, thanks to Battles, Animal Collective, Iron & Wine, Panda Bear, Portishead, Spiritualized and Radiohead among others....

I'm with you on that one. That's my golden era too.

1988-89 - Loop, Spacemen 3, Butthole Surfers, Hawkwind, Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub, Gaye Bykers On Acid, Thee Hypnotics, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr., Tackhead...
1990-92 - Spiritualized, Nirvana, Mazzy Star, Band of Susans, Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Spectrum, more Mudhoney, more Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Monster Magnet, Verve, Stereolab, Poison Idea, Screaming Trees, The The, Sundial...

And those are the gigs that spring to mind without having to think too hard - there were plenty more. A child in a sweetshop was how it felt.

Mind you I've seen 4 gigs so far this year and have another 4 planned for the next 2 weeks. I've averaged about 6 a year for the last 10 years so 2008 is shaping up to be memorable.

Just about to agree 100% with the extraordinary bands and time for music during these years but who are 'Poison Idea'?

Sure they are great but these were brilliant bands and brilliant gigs. Special to see GBOA mentioned and if the stroy has not been told before i once saw them at a secret gig as Lesbian Dopeheads On Mopeds. If there is ever a badge needing printing it must be this.

But genuinely who are PI?

Thanks

US punk band from Portland (I think). Singer Jerry A was 25 stone, guitarist Pig Champion was 38 stone. They looked truly inctredible on stage and played really fast straight punk rock. I saw a gig at the Marquee which rates as THE most exciting live set I have ever seen. People all over the stage throughout, stage diving, fans leaping off tables to the side and rear of the mosh pit. Total madness. Their 'Feel The Darkness' album is a good recommendation.

you forgot that Mr. Champion could spit 10 feet in the air and catch that spit right back in his mouth over and over and not miss a note(I think).

Not the greatest band ever by any means but the most exciting live act I've seen, no question, as previously stated. Not fucking about!

That they were (from Portland). Sandwiched inbetween San Francisco and Seattle, Portland has often been overshadowed by these two larger cities. However, Portland is now the "buzz" word and place to be for young indie bands (as is Austin, Tx.). There is definitely an energetic music scene here.

Never has the word 'sandwiched' been used so aptly.

Back to 1997- i was indeed one of those kids who just started getting into 'proper' music in that year.

Don't forget these beauties:

Yo La Tengo- I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Godspeed You Black Emperor- F#a#00 (first released on vinyl in this year, on CD in 1998)

And what is going on with Dave Wyndorf of Monster Magnet? He's done rehab and and looks 100 lbs heavier. Water retention, steroids, liver failure? Whatever it is it does not look too healthy. Anyone catch them in Europe last month?

My God! Those images are shocking!

Mind you I gave up on Monster Magnet when Dopes To Infinity came out, and even Superjudge was stretching it. Once McBain left it went rapidly downhill although the live shows up til Superjudge were still incredible.
