I realised that they were painstakingly transferred by fans - that's why i thought it was odd that the gig was only available to stream. I would understand only making it available in lossless format, but surely streaming goes against the GD sharing 'ethos' since it's making things less-than-entirely-free (and presumably not such good quality)?redcloud wrote:Actually...no. Official live Dead releases tend to be a no-no on live streaming/downloads/trader circuits. Most of what are available to stream etc. are soundboards and audience tapes from original tapers. The advance of the web and computer software (and people such as my friend who are obsessively devoted) means that people have spent HOURS doctoring old tapes. The once muffled 2nd generation audience tapes that we all used to trade for back in "the day" are now relics of the past (but not in my physical collection). Many, many shows have all been upgraded by dedicated Heads who have committed countless hours to their craft and to their love of the Dead.

Two great voices, but also two not very good records. The Cohen records is just boring. The Lanegan has is moments but there are not enough good songs and i don't like the production.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I love the new Lanegan record - one of the best things I've heard this year. His voice is as good as ever and I think the songs are really excellent throughout. I was suspicious about the drum machine on some tracks but I've grown to love it now. I should add that I hadn't heard anything by the guy since Whiskey For The Holy Ghost so I have some catching up to do. But I went and bought tickets for his Leeds gig on the strength of this new material.cantona wrote:Leonard Cohen -Old Ideas

Stone Roses Mix:
Shoot You Down
Ride On
Fools Gold
I Am The Resurrection
Ride On is a b-side from the Second Coming sessions that beats a lot of the album tracks. It's a grimy jam with a bit more of their early stuff than a lot of what made the album.
Second Coming as a record was a lot like Verve's Forth sessions. Very jammy mixed bag because each band hated each other too much to apply a lot of craft, but filled with all sorts of great nuggets for those with the patience to look for them.

I think this is a BEAST of an album. Only slightly marred by the annoying in between song rubbish. The songs though are fucking great. I have a mint condition original LP and man, oh man, the thunderously fuzzy bass and Walsh's sweet guitar freak outs just sound so good on the record. I noticed they get a little muddied in the mp3 mix I sent you...but, it's still pretty hot, 'eh?runcible wrote: James Gang - Yer Album

The 2nd album is good but gets a tad mainstream on occasion - still decent but I need to play it more. Many thanks!

Really good Needle Exchange mix I just found. Downloading is recommended. Track list and comments below.
I consider myself a Primal Scream fan but have never ever bothered with their first album so have only just heard "Love You" for the first time in my life.....and love it. Pretty certain the album won't all be like that though (??). The Soft Boys track is cool too.
Judging by that pic, Dee Dee is hot. Really hot. Just my kind of girl.
1. Gun Club, “Fire of Loveâ€
Dee Dee: We covered this one for the winter Italian tour we did this year as a duo. It’s tough like love.
2. Slade, “Do We Still Do Itâ€
Dee Dee: It reminds me of when we went through a heavy glam period together in our first studio apartment, aka Brandon was obsessively listening to Old New Borrowed and Blue.
3. Soft Boys, “Kingdom of Loveâ€
Dee Dee and Brandon: Any song about the bizarre spiritual kingdom of love is alright by us.
4. Richard Hell, “I’m Your Manâ€
Brandon: Because in addition to being sexually attracted to Dee Dee, I’m also sexually attracted to Richard Hell.
5. Stone Roses, “She Bangs the Drumsâ€
Dee Dee: Brandon first showed me the Stone Roses way back when we were dating. Their first album didn’t leave our turntable the first month he was away on tour.
6. Spiritualized, “Ladies & Gentlemen We’re Floating In Spaceâ€
Dee Dee: This was our wedding song, even though we just eloped at the county registrar’s office.
7. Dirty Beaches, “True Blueâ€
Brandon: It’s a beautiful song, and it’s extra special because we released it on our label Zoo Music.
8. Serge Gainsbourg, “69 Annee Erotiqueâ€
Brandon: It’s fun for knocking boots.
9. The Cure, “Lovesongâ€
Dee Dee: Such a perfect ode to love. The words are simple but true, and I relate.
10. Primal Scream, “Love Youâ€
Brandon: Because I went on tour once and I left it on a portable turntable in the kitchen, and when I returned, it wa unplayable ‘cuz Dee Dee had cooked next to it. It was covered in olive oily residue and had little burn marks on it.
Dee Dee: It’s also gorgeous. And I had no idea I ruined the record; he’s never mentioned this before.
11. Velvet Underground, “I Found a Reasonâ€
Brandon: It’s the prettiest song of all time.
12. Leonard Cohen, “Bird on a Wireâ€
Brandon: It was the first thing we ever recorded together as a couple, way back in 2007.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I've been listening to loads of Eric Clapton lately and finally got around to listening to Cream. I've had their greatest hits for a long time, but for whatever reason had been turned off by the heavy-handed 60s vibe of it. But today I've been listening and have been really grooving off of a lot of it. It's a thick, bluesy stew.
Is it worth looking into the albums or a bigger compilation? All of the famous songs are on the CD I have, as far as I can tell.

I don't get this.
Get the albums. Greatest hits compilations never tell the full story. Plus, I have always felt that the greatest hits comps contain the obvious tunes but often omit the hidden gems.Is it worth looking into the albums or a bigger compilation? Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I would start with Derek and the Dominoes' "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs." Despite the name, it's essentially an Eric Clapton album with some fantastic contributions from Duane Allman. One of my favorite albums of all time and perhaps the greatest double-LP ever.bunnyben wrote:i've never 'got' him. i don't really think his sound is special and whilst i'll grant that he is very tallented and much appreciated i still prefer the blues originals as to his 'versions' (then again most of the stuff of his that i've heared has been covers and the famous songs)
As for Clapton and the blues, I think it can be hard to hear how special Clapton is because his influence has been so widespread. A lot of the earlier white people singing the blues didn't quite capture the subtlety and nuance of the genre. A lot of the time I can't listen to much John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, early Rolling Stones etc. because it so often sounds like the singer is trying to blow Howlin' Wolf out of the water, an impossible task! Clapton's blues tends to be more laid back and include a pronounced country-rock/J.J. Cale influence -- so by diverging from traditional blues he in some ways captures more of the spirit.
Another problem is that his solo albums tend to be spotty. If he had condensed his 6-7 solo albums from his prime period into 4 solid albums, they would probably each be considered essential pillars of classic rock. But unfortunately one has to wade through shrill crap from his background singers and some other filler. After Layla, most people would probably say proceed to 461 Ocean Blvd or Slowhand, but I'd say give solo Clapton a shot with Just One Night, his excellent 1980 live album.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Layla is definitely worth your time. Unplugged is a pretty good record, but was severely overplayed at the time so there's been something of a backlash to it. It's not in his top tier of releases, and I don't listen to it that often, but it's a solid effort.bunnyben wrote:the library, of the ones mentioned, has Layla and other assorted love songs and also clapton unplugged as the only live album. either of those worth trying? it also has his latter albums. i would get the live 80's album but can't justify spending on cds i think i may not like at the moment! bloody recession!
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I've been a Crowes fan since the Southern Harmony... LP all those years ago. Fell away slightly over the years as i though some of the albums were getting a bit patchy and my musical tastes were discovering so many new flavours at the time, but the Cabin Fever DVD and the last album was such a return to form, that it just made me realise how good they really can be. Had no idea about the Rich Robinson solo records until i read Runcible talking about the 2nd one. Its such a wonderfully rich and beautiful album... gutted i missed him recently in Glasgow, but was completely oblivious to his date... Think i'll watch the Cabin Fever DVD to make up for it...redcloud wrote:Runcible and I have long touted the Crowes in this forum. Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I'm fairly close to that James - saw the Crowes do High Head Blues on The Word having thought they were a metal or heavy rock band previously. Blew me away. Like you a few albums later - Lions, By Your Side - failed to hit the heights of Amorica and Southern Harmony, but live they were still fantastic.
I'd avoid the RR solo album 'Paper' which I thought was pretty limp. This new one is really excellent though.
To my irritation I have lost my Cabin Fever DVD which I looked for last weekend to watch. Bugger.

both reserved- thanks, will have to wait for them to be transfered!jadams501 wrote:Layla is definitely worth your time.

Alright, where did he play? I would have liked to have seen them after some of those gig review actually... sounds like he would have suited a smaller venue though.Laz69 wrote: Rich Robinson... gutted i missed him recently in Glasgow, but was completely oblivious to his date...
Oh, and today's listening was most of the first disc from a newish Trojan compilation called Foundation Of Dub which is just very special indeed. Some well known and some not so well known tracks for me, all from around mid-to-late 70s, classic dub bass frenzy, loving this.
Also a blast from the past, picks from a 1995 drum & bass compilation compiled by DJ Hype called...yes, Drum 'N Bass Selection 4. Had this on a double vinyl years ago. Still sounds outta this world and pretty amazing, even on mp3 via headphones. Not heard some of this in years. Recent nostalgic stuff indeed.

Agreed on the brilliance of 'Southern Harmony' and 'Amorica'. I too walked away for a bit over the years as I also thought they got a bit patchy. The introduction of Luther Dickinson has definitely helped the band find a new groove. They seem to have aged well into a 2/3 hard rock, Southern boy, boogie jam band and 1/3 Californian desert/rural rock. The mixture sounds good to my ears and their concert I saw back in Dec 2010 was fucking brilliant.Laz69 wrote:
I've been a Crowes fan since the Southern Harmony... LP all those years ago. Fell away slightly over the years as i though some of the albums were getting a bit patchy
Back to Rich Robinson's solo though. I don't find his first solo effort ('Paper') as weak as Runcible does. It's a decent hard rock album with some nice chunky, warm guitar riffs. But, musically and lyrically (and vocally) it has nowhere near the depth nor vision that 'Crooked Sun' has. I think the latter LP is a near perfect piece. The only song I would probably choose to lose is the Fleetwood Mac cover, 'Station Man' (and I like the song!). I just don't think it flows well with the rest of the album.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Citizen Bird... That song is actually really good!
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Yep blasted that Citizen Bird track out last night at Runcibles - I like it though the vocals aint quite my thing. You can here there Spacemen/Spectrum influences (which is only a positive in my book)
