Last night whilst ironing shirts before bed: THE TRIFFIDS - BORN SANDY DEVOTIONAL

(An album I've hardly listened to since buying it on vinyl at a record fair a few years back).

This morning on the commute: BRIGHT EYES - I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING

(It is morning, but I'm far from being wide awake. Nice album. Not played it in a long time).

At my desk in 5 seconds time: THE MEN - OPEN YOUR HEART

(Only just started listening to this band via tracks on Youtube. The new album is all on there and sounds pretty damn good. I much prefer the less 'hardcore' numbers, which i think the prev album was full of, possibly??).

Oasis?
Oops. I meant Wilco of course. Long day...

I do love that solo. [/quote]

it's also one of my favourite recent Wilco tracks- infact, one of my favourite of all Wilco tracks! a diamond in the rough of the recent stuff, rather than the opposite. different strokes for different strokes I guess!
I love how its got a country lilt to it but also some of the angular guitarwork of Television in there .. its also the work of a band playing and interacting together rather than just arranging a song that Jeffs already written

The studio version is fine and the solo is OK but live it seems to be Nels' moment. And I find those solos pretty pedestrian. Fair enough I suppose, to each their own.

I love "Side With The Seeds". That's a beautiful tune.

I just got around to listening to the live version on the Sky Blue Sky bonus EP for the first time, and I agree that the solo (and song) are not nearly as effective in this performance at least. Too much guitar wankery, without the discipline of the beautiful studio version.

I actually date Wilco's decline to after Sky Blue Sky, which track for track might be my favorite album of theirs. The only song I always skip is "Side With The Seeds," which I find really annoying.

Right now... Beatles - One After 909

One of my favorites from Let It Be, though the original recording from Anthology 1 is much better.

Annoying? Really? Are you sure this is this the right word to describe this tune?

I think anybody who is or has been involved in a long term relationship can, at some point, relate to these lyrics:

But you and I will be undefeated
by agreeing to disagree
No one wins but the thieves
so why side with anything?

The streetlights glow
Comes and goes
When the sun comes back
As we all can plainly see
Embracing the situation
Is our only chance to be free
I’ll side with you
If you side with me

Side with the Seeds is a great song. i think the first half of Sky Blue Sky is really good but it trails off in the second half.

After three insanely late nights on the go I just awoke from a much needed sleep, turned on 6music and caught a heavy electricity-laden take of 'Hey Jane' - sounds magnificent!

Side with the Seeds is really really good, as is Shake It Off I think, like that one a lot. Saw them open with it in Berlin for the SBS tour and it was great. It's 'Walken' I don't like at all.

I didn't really like SBS initially, a bit of a mixed bag, thought it would have been a better 6/7 track EP ( and a strong one at that) but I've grown to really like it. Walken, What Light (ok-ish) & On And On are the ones I skip. I think it stands for what it is (if that makes sense) especially in the light of the last two records. Lots of folks hated the simple acoustic tracks but I always loved those. The B-side to What Light - Let's Not Get Carried Away - is a super rocker that probably didn't fit with the rest of the album but sometimes gets overlooked.

Pink Floyd - Marooned

A track from deep into their dinosaur rock period, but yet strangely good. It's an elegantly wasted instrumental.

Bruce Springsteen - Racing In The Street

The best song from Darkness on the Edge of Town, and possibly Bruce's whole career. The organ solo at the end is exquisite.

Such a shame that his career is in the privy!

A bit more mainsteam than the James Gang...but not bad. What do you think?

I actually prefer 'Barnstorm', which came out before "smoker". But, I have the first three solos ('Barnstorm', 'Smoker...' and 'So What'), which are decent early/mid 70's records . I own nothing after that...although I have heard the one with "Life's Been Good" (the one where he is underwater on the cover). Meh....bit too radio friendly for me.

I have an original US pressing of 'Smoker' and 'So What' but my 'Barnstorm' is actually a Japanese pressing (LP).

I'll be curious to hear what you think of 'Barnstorm'.

Agreed. Typical 70's radio friendly schmaltz on parts of it.

In my opinion, he (Walsh) never soared to the same heights that he did on the first two James Gang albums. I adore those records. The first LP in particular but 'Rides Again' is also brilliant. The third ('Thirds') is decent but definitely loses the rocking edge that the first two have in abundance (that said, the mellower second side of 'Rides Again' hints at the direction he is going).

Lightships - Electric Cables

Solo album from Gerard Love, bass player with TFC. Absolute gem of an album. Beautifully delicate, and has a lovely hazy, dreamy sound to it, but with all the usual pop hooks you'd expect from Gerry's TFC tracks. Perfect for this good weather!

The Allman Brothers Band - S/T (1969)

This is sooooo jammy! With most songs 5+ minutes or instrumentals it's not a surprise that FM radio didn't jump on this album back in '69. But, radio's loss is the listener's gain and I am so glad the Allman's didn't compromise for the sake of airplay. From start to finish this is a brilliant fucking album.

the Charlatans live @ Shepherds Bush 2000....they sound immense on this, just started listening to them again after having not done so for about 15 years! also loving the 'Us and Us Only' deluxe effort....

...and on a completely different tack, Shakti - Natural Elements....Mclaughlin's playing is awesome on this, all over the place but never losing sight of 'the groove'...

Yeah, it's fantastic - it's not as polished or keyboard-led as Slave Ambient, but it has a rustic ramshackle charm of its own.

Out of the Eye -- Woods (Sun and Shade)

The whole album is great, as are all of Woods' albums and all albums on Woodsist in my opinion! This track has got a super krautrock-y feel (sorta sounds almost identical to Hallogallo now that I think about it!), most of the album is a bit folk-ier.

Walking With Jesus (Live at Magasinit-Goteberg Sweden) 2.5.93

An outstanding 11 minute version that is the best Spiritualized version I have heard. Usually I think the Spz takes of WWJ are pretty indifferent, but this is the one that can stand with the greatness of the Spacemen 3 versions.

This is my favorite era for Spiritualized as a live band, too. Great gig!

Fuck me - Barry warned me about this and it's every bit as good as he described. JLL is incredible - the sheer presence of the man, the absolutely insane playing, the vibe, his voice, all the 'grrrrrrrr's' he comes out with... Phew. Rock and roll doesn't get more energetic than this.
