Amazing track, one of the greats showcasing the band's roots in country blues.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - The Howl Sessions

How "Pretend" never made it on to the album, I just don't understand.... a simply beautiful track. If anyone has a vinyl transfer of this LP I'd love them to have it to listen to on my i-Pod.

Spiritualized - Mary

This wasn't a track that immediately jumped out at me from SHSL, but it has some great lines and the end is a great cross between The Individual and the end of Shine A Light.

I just got a copy of Sonic's first Spectrum album. Doesn't have the pin wheel on the front, but is one of the original Silvertone releases from what I can gather.

Sounds so good LOUD, seems much more layered than what I've heard before on digital copies.

And I had no idea that J had played on it.

That Skinny Motherfucker With the High Voice -- Dump

Dump is James McNew (aka YLT's bassist).

Yo La Tengo are the kings of covers in my opinion. This album is just another example of one of their member's being rad. It's an album entirely composed of Prince covers recorded to cassette in the late 90s, then redistributed in 01 with a few more tracks. Originally started as an exercise in learning to use a know hard disc recorder after upgrading from a classic tascam 4-track. Captures what I always love about YLT's tone, but also you can hear James' own distinct influence (particularly on 'Erotic City').

Some highlights for me - the looping drum track on 1999, Raspberry Beret (probably my favorite on the album), The Beautiful Ones (reminds me IMMENSELY of something, I just can't quite place it), and When U Were Mine. It can be pretty difficult to find, so if you want it, just PM me, and I guess I will send you a link to a mediafire of it.

Any other YLT fans out there? If so and you like this (and you haven't heard it already), check out the whole band's cover album Fuckbook (recorded under the moniker Condo Fucks, a joke from the inserts for I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One)

big fan here. I've never investigated any of James' solo stuff (I do really like Stockholm Syndrome though which I believe is all but a James song), or the Condo Fucks either. having said that when I saw them recently on the 'spin the wheel tour', the first half of the set was a Condo Fucks one and it was okay. I've found them to be a rather inconsistent band live whenever I've seen them but the records are largely brilliant

Carlton Melton - Pass It On

managed to finally pick this up on vinyl over the weekend on a trip to Dublin. It was a bit of luck actually as someone had filed it under "M" by mistake and I was looking for some Mogwai. Also came across 2 copies of the BRMC Howl RSD vinyl but at €34 a pop I had to resist the urge.

I was listening to their (supposedly) first demo from 1990 yesterday. Its up on youtube. Posted by a guy who seems to have run a record shop on Haight Asbury across from where Anton was staying. Says anton dropped it in to him back in 1990 when he was first starting and had decided on the BJM name. Was very good, although i don't recognise anything that i heard.

If anyone knows the details of this tape or the tracks on it, i'd be all ears!

Also watch a full show on youtube from 1998, The point in Atlanta if i recall. Good show. Great tunes and some heckling!

Worth checking out!

Might have been this: http://www.burgerrecords.org/apps/webst ... ow/3130791

It was just reissued by Joel (I think?) in a limited ed. of 1000 cassettes only. I ordered one and it showed up quick.

Well the blog the youtube video points you to suggests that the demo i was listening to pre-dates. Someone asked if these were the same tracks from the Pol Pot's release and they aren't apparently, hence why i asked. I'll see if i can find the youtube link...

I have mostly been listening to Thee Milkshakes - Out of Control after watching a very old clip from 1984 originally on The Tube called Trash on the Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjqZyEUETZU:

If you are interested enough to have a look you can see a young Tracy Emin grooving around, I believe she was Billy Childish's significant other at the time.

Feeling a bit down....my sister passed away two years ago this weekend. Two consecutive shows kept me distracted....grey Sunday morning after and now missing her. Roasting a chicken for Sunday lunch. We'll go for a walk later and spend time in the garden.

Not around here it isn't. We had Fried on the other night. Kilimanjaro was the next cab off the rank until my mate held up Radio One by The Heads and asked "Is this any good?"

You just have to read Cope's books about this period to understand why they went from the front cover of Smash Hits (!) to breaking up in such a short period. Wonderful music, but some seriously dangerous personality traits/habits/egos....

I remember a Julian Cope gig at the TV Club in Dublin in 1983/84 where he ended up covered in his own blood, as did half the front row of the audience. The whole evening was just seriously bizarre. I constantly amazed he is still with us......

On topic again: Perplexa: Perplexa - simply unbelievable. Discovered this band via this board as a result of a Spzretent tip IIRC.....percussion on this album is stunning, almost providing the lead on some tracks.

This what precisely makes this forum such a valuable resource. I have learned about so many new bands from this message board. Without it i'd be lost.
I have read both Possesed and Repossesed. Got that two-fer book.
What shocks me is how Fried gets dismissed too. I think that is JC's finest solo album.
Maybe I am marching to a different drummer.

What the hell has happened to Mark Kozelek? He seems like such a bitter guy these days. The songs seem to deliberately push the idea that he's a total dick and hates the audience and making music in general. Tongue in cheek or not, it's still a pretty bad move to make a whole album about it.

I found Royal Trux's Accelerator on vinyl at a record store I hate and haven't been to in 4 years.

Such an incredible album. Really doesn't sound like anything else and it's because of the band lineup. This is from almost 15 years ago and that seems pretty ridiculous.

Why didn't more bands follow Royal Trux???

I'm listening to an album from 1998 and it feels like I've just discovered the future of music. I get the kind of same effect with Spiritualized and Ladies and Gentlemen....

I guess that's what makes all of us here special...

Dead Sea Apes - Soy Dios I, II and III

Fucking hell this is KILLER!!! Pretty much three version of the same basic song, but building into badder, heavier and naster versions as it plays through the three tracks. If someone can tell me where to find a better bass sound than on Soy Dios II, i want to know about it!
