I pulled out a decade's worth of Pretty Things albums last night and played them all back to back. From their superb first s/t LP to 1972's 'Freeway Madness' (their last half decent record). Wonderful band that sadly never received their fair dues.

can`t hardly believe its 10 years, been listening to bits and pieces of the Clash the last couple of days as well , particularly the song Broadway from Sandinista , really shows Joes way with words and ability to paint a picture, musically as well its a really evocative bit of music,

anyway , built up some Amazon MP3 download points due the amount of cash spent with them this last month on Xmas , so decided to take a punt on a band I never paid much heed to before ,
God Speed! You Black Emperor- Allelujah! Don`t Bend! Ascend , eh waoh , never really new what to expect ,and its 4/5 listens to get my head round it a little but it sounds amazing !!! can see me listening to this well into the New year,

John Cooper Clarke doing Xmas tunes on 6Music: epic stuff.

Whether you do Christmas or not, best wishes to all. Also, early happy new year to all, especially those brave souls on here expecting a bundle of joy in 2013.

Excuse my blithering: my neighbour went into labour at midday over drinkies, so we're trying to dealing with our flashbacks today via a second bottle of Combe Aux Jacques.....very civilized.

A whole bunch of Christmas vinyl:-

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill
(back to his his brilliant best)
Cheval Sombre - Mad Love
(lush, gorgeous sounds with plenty of Mr Sonic Boom's handiwork)
Goat - World Music
(this really is good isn't it...why did I doubt you all?! If ever there was a good time to use the word "groovy" then this is it!)
Tame Impala - Lonerism
(was on the Xmas list long before the negative comments about it started appearing on the forum. Though, I must say, Mrs Shines and I really like it)

I just got Graveyard's Lights Out and it's a decent record. Bluesy and psychedelic, but the vocals are a little too over-the-top for me.

However, I think a lot of people here would like it. Definitely check it out if you get a chance!

I am a big fan of the "Pretty Things"; another great band that got lost in the crowd; so may did.

Aura - 'Sativa'
(Mid-late 70's funk/soul/psych (ish) band from Northern Cali. Horn heavy but with some blistering guitar and a lot of funky bass. Imagine if The Savage Rose were from Oakland instead of Denmark).

I can't remember, I think it was one of you two who posted about the dutch freakbeat stuff a few weeks ago? I meant to ask about all that, it sounded really really cool, particularly the compilation one of you guys mentioned. I have zero knowledge of any of that stuff, what is some good stuff to introduce me to it? I couldn't find that compilation on the webz, didn't look too too hard though.

Recent listening:
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972
Tim Hecker - Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again
Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts Box Set (Betrayed In the Octagon, Russian Mind, and Zones Without People)
So very ambient indeed.

I have a cool Dutch comp too (made for me by a collector). I know it's on cassette but I may have transferred it years ago to a cd-r. I'll have a look and if so I'll share it with you. I'm totally with spzretent though....Dutch freakbeat is only bettered by the UK bands. Personally, I enjoy the Dutch bands more so than the Krautrockers. But that is a matter of taste.

Regarding where to start with 60's Dutch bands though....can't go wrong with Q65, Group 1850 or The Outsiders.

Johnny Ace - Memorial Album (+ bonus tracks)

Johnny Ace was a R&B singer from right before rock 'n' roll, who kinda splits the difference between postwar blues and 50s high school dance jukebox music. He famously died preposterously young, either in a game of Russian Roulette or otherwise mistakenly killing himself. Anyway, despite tributes from Paul Simon and Pete Kember himself I'd never gotten around to listening to him until I came across a copy of the Memorial Album at my hometown record store.

Good stuff!

I found it!! Tape only I'm afraid, but it is called 'Happenin' Holland' and is GREAT 60's Dutch freakbeat comp a collector friend made me back in the halcyon days of tape trading. Other than The Outsiders it is all pretty obscure stuff (45's?).

Oh, and 'Crystallization' by the Cosmic Dealer is another great Dutch rock album!

Vatican Shadow- Ghosts Of Chechnya, rec. from The Quietus top 75 of the year , industrial/techo/ambient I suppose , hate trying to labels on something like this, but its strangely calming and atmospheric ,has a detached kinda feeling that seems to suit the mood I generally have at the start of a new year,

Deerhunter - Cryptograms
Every time I put it on I am totally amazed by how seamlessly it flows from krauty, pulsating jams to swirling, watery, synthesized ambiance to almost punk screeching. Just a fucking cool album...

Going to throw on some o that stuff from holland tonight! You know what they say about 'em... got GET in TOUCH with the DUTCH.... I don't know if that's actually said by anybody other than my father when he wants to seem like he was wild/hip when he lived in Amsterdam for a year in the 70s.

i keep returning to that album and somehow it always feels fresh and inspired. I quite like that the original sessions were such a failure, (i think he said it sounded like listening to loveless on shrooms.. ) and that the album was actually the second sort of desperate attempt to get the tracks recorded. maybe it took that initial failure to get them to really focus...

Quite a tough listen though. I played loads of old Crass about a year ago and found it hard work despite being curiously inspiring. I wish there was some decent footage of that band live but the lighting was so limited almost nothing exists.

listened to a bunch of stuff recently-

cocteau twins- 'heaven or las vegas'/'victorialand'
death and vanilla- 's/t'
ty segall- 'twins' (finally got it on vinyl after all of the holiday madness wound down)
swans- 'the seer'- WOW i really dropped the ball on this one- something was telling me to buy it when i found the vinyl at reckless and i didn't. currently 3/4 of the way through my first listen and i've scoured the internet to find a decently priced triple lp copy of it. i've never heard much of their stuff, but this album has proven to be thoroughly convincing! it's somehow beautiful, fucked-up, transcendent, cathartic and pummeling all at the same time.
talk talk- 'spirit of eden'- checked this out after all of the talk about it on this board. it was really nice for my commute this morning.

The Clash- Combat Rock. Joe Strummer now gone for 10 years, thought I'd give a spin to a Clash record I don't really listen to much.. it's still a right old mixed bag. some amazing songs (love Know Your Rights and Ghetto Defendant) and some weak songs.. the whole thing just sounds tired and dejected too.. like they were worn out.. out of the big singles I could happily never hear Should I Stay or Should I Go for the rest of my days, but still think Rock the Casbah is an utterly classic pop song!

Swans- The Seer. only just got his myself, wish I could share shalloboi's enthusiasm but it's not really grabbing me... will keep trying as it's a lot of music to take in!

Spacemen 3- Forged Prescriptions. excellent collection. some great guitar work- Jason is almost shredding on Starship!!

Not quite what I'm listening to now, but (without painting too much of unwanted image for you all  ) I've just had a bath with baby Dylan while listening to:-

Gnod - Gnod Drop Out With White Hills

He seemed to enjoy it.... the bath AND the music :D 8)

He also seemed to calm right down after a mammoth screaming session when I played him:-

Cheval Sombre - Mad Love

I'm hoping my son is going to be just as into (good) music as I am

New Order — Lost Sirens

I like it! Some really nice moments, guess kinda nostalgic . Probably will be their last.

Best,

I've had this for a while but am not too impressed by it. I guess it is quite nice and poppy and inoffensive, but in reality these are tracks that were deemed not good enough to make the Waiting For The Siren's Call album, itself not really a high point of their career. I wonder if they will bother to make another record or simply play the hits live a la The Pixies instead? That seems to be where the money is these days

I picked up the latest Fuxa LP and 7" today. The album is really quite good and I am ashamed to admit appeals to me simply on the grounds of being a fabulous picture disc. Haven't listened to the single yet though.

Was gonna post about my general cheer about just recieving the Kenny Tudrick record on vinyl, along with the Ken's Kitchen EP, which Fountain Records threw in for free cause there was some mix up with my order, and how good it sounds, but I'm kinda distracted by Kate's boobs in that tank top in the picture in the previous post :D

Arrived this morning. Just listened my way through it while setting up for the day's work. Very impressed on first listen.

George Harrison- Collected Works 1962-1990 4x CD. Amazing outtakes and unreleased tracks from those years including Beatles and All Things Must Pass material. 87 tracks from my all time favorite Beatle.
