Just spotted that Maps released their third album in July - Vicissitude. Anyone heard it, got it? What's it like?

Listening to the following:

White Manna EP "Dune Worship" via bandcamp.. superb couple of tracks...
Night Beats new track "The Seven Poison Wonders" posted on Youtube...
New Dead Meadow album... incredible... real return to form IMO... can't wait to see them live at the end of Sept
Carlton Melton - Four Eyes EP

Had a listen to the new White Hills album and i think its better than Frying On This Rock... some amzing drone pieces amongst the tracks that are just superb...

Not right now as I'm at work, but on my journey in this morning I had Darkside Of The Moon on after being inspired by the video trailer for the BBC's radio play.

It's nice to be liked,

The Warlocks - Phoenix (US gatefold vinyl edition)

Picked this up on eBay a few days ago...turned up in the post yesterday as well packaged a record I have ever seen. Vinyl and sleeve are in immaculate condition. I so rarely see Warlocks vinyl up for grabs so really pleased I managed to win this even if I did have to fork out slightly over £30 (inc. p&p) to get it...I'm slowly resigning myself to the fact that that's the going rate for a decent copy of rare 90's/00's vinyl

Anyway, fantastic record in great condition and just sounds so, so much better than the CD version I already have. Really looking forward to the new Warlocks LP due at the end of the year and, hopefully, a UK promotional tour to accompany it. 8)

Picked up a few records yesterday in Eugene, Oregon. One of them was this:
MODEL-SHOP2.jpg
MODEL-SHOP2.jpg (35.57 KiB) Viewed 7384 times
This was the Spirit record that never was. Recorded in 1968 as a soundtrack it probably would have been their third LP but it was shelved. Many of these tunes have seen release in some context on various collections but this comes direct from the mono versions recorded and was what the band (apparently) intended to be released.

The more I listen to this band the more I think they were one of the true greats that had so much talent and potential but never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. For example, why were they not at Woodstock or why did they decline to play? Shame, as they really were so fucking good!

Disappears - Guider

HOLY HOLY this is fire! Turn it up real loud... has that same slightly punky attitude as Hookworms, those rolling bass lines in the background... these songs just drive and drive. Realllllly digging it.

This weeks driving choice is the immortal White Light/White Heat

Man. Does it get any better than this at full volume? 'Sister Ray' and 'I Heard Her Call My Name' sound so good, despite the technically awful production quality...

by far my favorite vu thing. wl/wh is the only one that never for a second has felt taxing to listen to.

Cleaning bathrooms and dorms for the first week before classes start... Had to vacuum 30 rooms in 3 hrs today... Hallogallo and sister ray got me through a couple in pretty awesome fashion. Music makes industrial vacuuming fun as fuck.

Break just finishing, onto a ton of toilets...

their new one 'era' is streaming on pitchfork advance right now and it's pretty great. driving and dark, plus it's filled with 80s postpunk references that don't sound half-assed or ironic. http://pitchfork.com/advance/190-era/

have you heard 'lux'? that one's the best of theirs i think, although it doesn't have anything as stretched and hypnotic as 'revisited' on it.

What do you make of the album, Niamhm? I must admit, I wasn't blown away by it, though I have only played it right through a couple of times. Is it a grower?

I like it, probably the best since Howl , I think losing his father has had a big effect on Robert and this album , feels like it pulls all the strands of what they do together the best to date,I would say yes some repeat playing pays off , some felt it slackened off after Pete`s punk/ garage songs kick in , but I love those tracks , think its a good album , been playing it a lot this year and it will be one a my fav. at the end of the year :)

I thought the latest BRMC was good, nothing amazing but solid.

I'd be interested to hear more about what the Kandodo album is like. is it just kinda ambient drone or is there more to it than that? I will definitely check them out at ATP. that reminds me, I must listen to some Follakzoid too.

tonight's listening lined up:-
The Sound- From The Lions Mouth
Bob Dylan- Bootleg Series Vol 2 (some amazing stuff on here- She's Your Lover Now is one of his greatest songs)
Kieran Hebden / Steve Reid / Mats Gustafsson Live at the South Bank

Blue Sunshine Minds - various - Some tracks found online. Excellent dreamy hazy "shoegaze" stuff. Really loving this.
Zephyrs - First Demo Tape - Superb bluesy, hard rock from '69
Blues Pills - various - Again, tracks found online. More bluesy hard rock, this time from Sweden, 2013!
Dead Skeletons - s/t - This has really struck a chord with me recently. Fabulous album that just grows and grows. Love it.

Yep. Introduced my dad to this too. He is a Tommy Bolin fan and had no idea Zephyrs had existed.

New Dean Wareham single, "Love Is Colder Than Death". Not really very exciting. Maybe it will grow on me. It's been a number of years since the 13 Most Beautiful release, which, while not being an official album per se, has numerous absolutely outstanding tracks. If this track is the best one from his forthcoming mini-album, I'm not sure this release is going to do much for me. Also, a mini-album!?! Come on, Dean ...

funny you should ask - i have Fresh Cream on Atco mono 33-206
http://www.discogs.com/Cream-Fresh-Crea ... se/3109711

Once I clean it up, I'll see how it plays and if it's worth ripping. :D

So far, I've used spray cleaner and played it through a couple times. The stylus keeps picking up a ton of dust on each play, it seems impossible! I'm going to play it a few more times and see if that stops.

Update #1: 3 plays on side 1 seems to have cleaned out the groove.
Now on to side 2 for multiple plays.

I have a UK mono pressing rip by someone else, the track list is different; I may end up sharing that privately if my rip doesn't pan out. It's FLAC in 16/44, only about 156 MB.

UK Tracklist:
01. N.S.U
02. Sleepy Time Time
03. Dreaming
04. Sweet Wine
05. Spoonful
06. Cat’s Squirrel
07. Four Until Late
08. Rollin'and Tumblin’
09. I’m So Glad
10. Toad

Update #2: see post below.

Here's my Fresh Cream mono rip, give it a try.

https://mega.co.nz/#!pJtTBLKS!e8yHDxEeS ... 7d-Z7WvMdc
(98.9 MB)

You may have to copy & paste the link. Chrome and Firefox work pretty well with Mega & it's fast.

Cream never released anything approaching "audiophile" quality, but their debut - in its common stereo incarnation - stands out as being particularly challenged. It's one of those productions that was obviously not intended for stereo. The entire rhythm section is usually relegated to one speaker, with the rest of the panoramic soundstage filled with lead vocal and overdubs - the telltale signs of mid '60s four-track recording.

The mono mix, however, absolutely smokes. It's bass-heavy, everything is pushed to saturation, and Ginger Baker's drumming is violent and overpowering. In other words, pretty close to what these guys were reputed to actually sound like at the time. Even the relatively lightweight "I Feel Free" rocks hard.

I’m So Glad remains one of the worst songs ever written or performed, by anyone.

The 4 minutes that feels like 4 hours.

Ciaran, Cian (Super Furry Animals) - They Are Nothing Without Us: Wonderful album. Much more uptempo than last year's Outside In. Recommended.

Hmmm...I disagree. I have always liked this song. The Litter do a solid cover of it too.

I have listened to Isaac Hayes' 20 minute By The Time I Get To Phoenix twice in the last 24 hours, and a bunch of his other stuff too. He has a song from one of his blaxploitation movies called "House Full of Girls" that combines a striking groove that really reminds me of Philip Glass from the same period with a preposterous lyric that is a trashy lecherous fantasy until the end, when he suddenly switches to saying that you, gorgeous, are a whole houseful of girls wrapped into one!

I've also been listening to some Tom Jones and really enjoy the arrangements and general supper club vibe, even if he himself can be tasteless at times. Isaac Hayes sort of synthesizes all that's wonderfully cheesy about Tom Jones with amazing spacey funk -- one of the all-time greats!

Mmoss - Only Children

This is fucking great. Bought this after reading about them in Optical Sounds and I'm not disappointed. Some real head nodders, hippie vibes and modern psych sounds....nice 8)

While I don't have a Japanese pressing of this album I do have this record but I haven't played it for years. I remember buying it at a record fair when I was a teenager and not really "getting it". But, I've have always loved the mandala cover art and some of the photos of Sonja are interesting.

On an offtopic note - Air conditiong is exactly what I need at work...man, it has been a scorching hot week here and truly unbearable at work. A cool down is hopefully coming soon.

Back on topic...I've been listening to a lot of Spirit, recently. I may even start a long thread (book) about them, if that's ok (see Nirvana thread)?

I did NOT have a Japanese copy either until a few days ago! I have the US copy, but had not heard that LP in years, and I enjoyed it very much. I do like a great many types and genre and eras of music; and I like to obtain good quality discs of what I like!
It just so happens that I bought a number of these Japanese releases lately, and it is wonderful to hear such nice quality vinyl. Music or Silence.

Over the years, I too have not really enjoyed X,Y or Z, only to hear them again at a later date and wonder what I was thinking to exclude them so off handedly! I think most people have done this; I can recall several albums I really like now, but the first time - well, not so much! :D There are those that I STILL don't enjoy as much as someone else might; the Beauty of Individual preferences is a good thing.

(It is hot as blazes here too)! But the weekend promises to be Ideal!

SPIRIT is a Great band; so why not share your thoughts and so on?

Uriah Heep - Look At Yourself (1971 LP)

One of those bands that have a gazillion albums and most are not very good (often the cover art is better than the music). But, some of their earlier releases are decent, harmless, early 70's heavy progressive rock. This one sounded good last night with a glass of wine (my wife may disagree though).

“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness

'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.

'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.

'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”

Robyn Hitchcock - Fegmania

Any Robyn Hitchcock fans here?

I've recently become obsessed with The Soft Boys and slowly making my way into Hitchcock's "& the Egyptians" and solo albums. I've got Fegmania and Black Snake Diamond Role and I love both. Where should I go next?

I've heard the "classics" from the Soft Boys (Can of Bees, and Underwater Moonlight) and the dozens of bonus tracks from the matador reissues...but none others. I'll check out that song.

"Invisible Hitchcock" is essential! You absolutely must get this one (and it has "Point it at Gran" on it). I also like and recommend - "You & Oblivion", "I Often Dream of Trains" and "Eye".

yup, listened to this one twice today.

also, crystal stilts- 'nature noir'- not quite as solid as 'in love with oblivion' but a lot more varied stylistically and some really nice tremolo-drenched spaciness here and there.
