Barn Owl- Ancestral Star
really liking this. basically drone rock but they vary it up within that- some songs have shades of doom, others are lighter and floaty (harmonium and even some violin)
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys recent Earth albums.

Bruce Langhorne - Ending

BBC4 and 6Music have just finished a week of programmes on film music.

I caught this song on 6music the other night and can recommend a listen. It’s from a film called The Hired Hand directed by Peter Fonda.

“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness

'Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.

'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.

'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”

I've gotten hardcore into country these past few years -- Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Ray Price, etc. There are a bunch of Willie tracks I like, especially from pretty early on in his career, but I tend to find him a bit one note. I appreciate him as much as an Americana icon as as a musician, and tend to like him on shuffle rather than in a sustained fashion. Am I missing something?

i'm one of those people who sets upon a small amount of material and goes with it, often basing my feelings about an artist on a tiny window w very little scope

so i hope someone else responds to your very good question!
i know i'm missing something.. a broader focus on much of the stuff i listen to.

although i will gush about Red Headed Stranger album, and if you don't know it already (which you most likely do), i would recommend it.
i would like to research all the things he based that on.

Weekend - Sports. really great when played loud. hopefully I'll catch them with disappears in a month or two at the church of boston, it's 21+ but if any luck holds I'll figure out some way to get in. weekend are sort of noisey and shoegazey where disappears are kraut and pulsing. I really really am digging this. Haven't gotten to hear the new one yet though.

Those Were Different Times: Cleveland 1972-1976 (Electric Eels, The Styrenes, and Mirrors)
Loving this. to become a part of the radio station here at harvard (whrb 95.3 fm, punk/rock broadcasting from 10pm-5am), among other thing I have to listen to 5-6 assigned records each week and then write up thoughts on them preceding a guest lecture on some genre of rock, usually some form of punk. this first week is "pre-punk" - most of the listening is pretty standard (white light/white heat, the stooges' fun house, nuggets, the original modern lovers, captain beefheart's trout mask replica), but this is totally unheard of stuff to me and it seems awesome. Redcloud, something tells me you'll now something about this record, or bands? Another one that I hadn't heard before that was pretty cool was Link Wray and the Ray-men's Rock n Roll n Rumble, which I guess was one of the first rock albums to ever use distortion or something? Pretty much just the blues over and over, but it was pretty cool. The intense tremolo on the first track sounded awfully familiar though :D

Cleveland Rocks! Electric Eels were one of the legendary Cleveland bands. But, what I am playing very loudly above ^^^ (Damnation of Adam Blessing) were another legendary Cleveland band. Sure, we may also have had the pop sounds of The Raspberries but the city was full of underground rock, psych and punk bands and the collection you have is probably the equivalent of Cleveland's "Nuggets".

Glad you are getting so involved with Campus life. I always wanted to do some radio stuff. I almost had a chance in London but it never panned out.

I did WBRU in Providence during college. Working in radio was definitely more educational and meaningful than pretty much any class I took, so stick with it!

One track, 63-and-a-half minutes of unsurpassed sludgy stoner metal genius.

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

It's so noisy at the fair
But all your friends are there
And the candy floss you had
And your mother and your dad.

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

There's a girl just down the aisle,
Oh, to turn and see her smile.
You can hear the words she wrote
As you read the hidden note.

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

Now you're underneath the stairs
And you're givin' back some glares
To the people who you met
And it's your first cigarette.

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

Now you say you're leavin' home
'Cause you want to be alone.
Ain't it funny how you feel
When you're findin' out it's real?

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons,
You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leaving there too soon,
You're leaving there too soon.

I picked up the Carlton Melton album today. They were phenomenal last night at the Psyche Fest. Out of the bands I saw, Carlton Melton were streets ahead of the field. I really enjoyed Moon Duo (much better with a real drummer) and Eat Lights: Become Lights (who were just astonishingly loud). The rest was a bit Meh really IMHO. Beer was great too.....

I don't know if anyone here remembers The Shore from about 10 years ago, a California britpop act that cribbed extensively from Richard Ashcroft and claimed Spiritualized as a prime influence. They weren't a CLASSIC band per se but had several songs I really liked and seemed to be keeping the torch lit for a certain style when it was pretty unhip. Anyway, I was happy to hear that they just self-released their 3rd album and it's pretty good -- a pleasing, earnest mix of Ashcroft, Byrds, Oasis, MBV, and other acts most around here like. Worth checking out!

Bob Seger System - Mongrel

Often overlooked third LP by the Detroit rocker. A brilliant follow up to his weak second album ('Noah') and the last from the BSS. His more popular solo stuff followed.

a lot of nirvana- my 'live and loud' dvd came in the mail and i've watched it three times and ripped the audio so i can listen to it on my ipod. i bought the 2013 albini remix tracks as well.

other than that-
mazzy star- 'seasons of your day'
neko case- i can never remember the title because it's so long
beach house- 'bloom'
crystal stilts- 'nature noir'

i'm at work right now playing this massive mix of vinyl rips- it's got broadcast, brmc, beach house, atlas sound, death and vanilla, tamaryn, radar eyes, etc.

After a week of binge-ing on Neil Young, CSNY & the Stones I came up for air and played The Aliens Luna LP tonight.
This really is something of a masterpiece isnt it?

i really like it. they've pretty much picked up right where they left off with 'among my swan.' it's not as dark as that album- there's nothing like 'umbilical' or 'roseblood' on it, for instance, but 'disappear,' 'flowers in december' and 'all your sisters' are good reference points.

Carlton Melton - Absolutely everything i have by them...
...including the new album, which i'm just loving!! Was gutted there was no vinyl copies of Pass It On at the shows, but understand its probably long sold out. Just going to have to really keep my eyes peeled for that. If anyone stumbles across a copy, PLEASE let me know!

Fuzz - S/T
This is another superb album. Had been listening to their live shows regularly as i loved the dirty, sabbath-esque energy about it, and have been really chuffed that the album manages to capture that feeling in the tracks.

Earthless - From The Ages
Been waiting for this one too. Incredible freaked out jams of the highest order. Their pace is frenetic and relentless at times, but i just LOVE this stuff.

Bardo Pond - Live, The Annandale, Sydney, 01-Aug-2013
Great bootleg show found online after a tip off by the Band via Facebook. Good sound quality too. Wish there were more boots of this band around.

There's stuff I like on Talkie Walkie, but sometimes it makes me feel like I'm shopping for Hello Kitty accessories in a trendy Japanese boutique. I almost always prefer their instrumental material. Haven't listened to Le Voyage Dans Lune enough to have a solid opinion, but I did quite like most of Love 2 (very spy music) and a good chunk of Pocket Symphony.

The Heads: Inner Space Broadcasts Vol II REALLY LOUD. I bought both versions because I was unable to choose which once I wanted

This is great. It is a bit challenging as it is really, really raw in places. But as ever, when they let rip, you stay ripped.....

I believe it is sold out already. I really would like to see this on vinyl (hint, hint) too!

Glass Harp's first two albums are queued and ready while their third, "It Makes Me Glad" is currently jamming in our living room. Man, what a great early progressive/jam band. Phil Keaggy was (is) tremendous!

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?

Post by mojo filters »

I've tried searching for a BJM stream but all the sites I found seem to be no longer streaming, or I get a video that won't play on my phone.

Is there a current link some kind soul could point me in the direction of, or is the problem that Im trying to get it on my phone, and need to get a different device to use for streaming the audio/video referred to here?

Thanks in advance!
I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt. I didn't promise this shit would be good!

The Holydrug Couple- Noctuary. really enjoying this, very unique atmosphere to this album!
Galaxie 500 - Today. a classic in my opinion!
The Chameleons- What Does Anything Mean, Basically? my least fave Chams album, this. might be largely due to the muddy production. the songs are bit more rocky than their usual.
Do Make Say Think -s/t. kind of an anomoly in their catalogue. none of the usual dynamics & crescendos of postrock. it's kind of droney instead, lots of twangy riffs and I can even hear some dub in the rhythm section.

actually it was my least favourite for a long time- it does sort of stand apart from the rest of their albums. only just recently has it grown on me.
my favourite is Country Hymn, Winter Hymn, Secret Hymn- fantastic album.

how's the new Exit Calm sounding? the songs I've heard haven't really floated my boat.

i'll admit it wasnt as immediate as the first one although i am starting to really dig it atm. its all pretty good really, although 'fiction' is the tune i'm most likely to skip. the last track is awesome.

The Holydrug Couple - Noctuary

WOW!!! I am absolutely loving this right now. I like that Sacred Bones is getting the chilean stuff out there here in the states. This is beautiful I think...

Does anybody have any material by the Lucid Dream? They were mentioned in a thread in the gigs section w/ the holydrug couple (the guy from the band even popped on to say hello!). Would love to hear them.

ARP - More: This album is fantastic. I don't know a lot about this dude, except that his previous albums are more electronic/ambient, whereas this one is more song-based with beautiful vocals/harmonies, guitars, Carol Kaye-ish bass, etc. I highly recommend this album. I had a tough time tracking down a vinyl copy, but finally found one for a reasonable price from a U.S. seller on eBay.

Cian Ciaran - They Are Nothing Without Us: Second awesome album in two years by SFA's keys/synth dude. Much heavier/rockier than last year's Outside In. He plays every instrument on this record. Well done. Recommended.

Their new album Runci... and rather nice it is too! Very kindly received a promo copy from a friend in the US. Due out at the end of the month:

The opener is a big fat fuzzy swirling sludgey syrup of psych with the usual heady flute sounds!
