Listening to Gnod drop out with White Hills, as was mentioned by theWarmth what stands out is the variation across the record and it's fantastic record
shaun, I've been buying records recently from volcanic tongue too, and it's a pleasure from the amazing weekly emails to the great records arriving!

Entreat Plus from the Cure's Disintegration reissue. I'm not sure we need all the demo's on the Cure reissues but the expanded live cd catches them at their peak.
Also, it shows what a great jo.bn Jason did with the L&GWAFIS demo's - your interest is kept because you hear the song building up into what we all know and love. Clever that!

Still navigating the label I harped on about previously; Disaro and discovering the Triangle label
Streaming the following;

Enjoyable little take on the country/pop "End of the World" by Skeeter Davis. Proper apolyptical sludge...or just manipulated tape?

Talking Heads - The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads
I've become a bit obsessed with this album the last couple of weeks. The 2nd disc is staggeringly good and way beyond what I initially thought Talking Heads were about when I first heard them. Lysergic white boy afro funk that's pure genius in places. I mean 'Houses In Motion', man, that opens right up on this album. I also love the first disc as a perfect overview of their '77 to Fear Of Music era.

I don't know those ones. The Name Of This Band Is.......is the only album I have by them so far. Coming soon via Amazon are More Songs About Buildings & Food, Fear Of Music and Remain In Light. I've meant to buy them for years but never got round to it. Is Speaking In Tongues a good album? I've heard 3 tracks from it and love those for their funky and carefree flavour.scratch wrote:johnnyboy wrote: I also love the first disc as a perfect overview of their '77 to Fear Of Music era.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Fear of Music and Remain In Light are 2 of the best albums I can think of - although very different in style. Some of the stuff on Fear of Music is years ahead of its time. 'Cities' pre-dates Todd Terry's house shuffle by over 15 years. 'Drugs' takes a psychedelic slant to a different bad trip angle in a highly original manner. 'Mind' and 'Heaven' are some of David Byrne's best ever songs, so well thought out, the vocals delivered with such conviction. 'Air' is all atmosphere.
'Remain In Light' is a change in style to some extent although a hint of that direction can be found in 'I Zimbra' on FOM. That funky element is very obvious - Houses In Motion, Born Under Punches - but mixed in there is some incredible music that is really out there. 'The Great Curve' is heavy and pacey as fuck with Adrian Belew's brain-melting guitar solo terrifying at the track's climax. 'Seen And Not Seen' is one of the most psychedelic things I have ever heard - lyrically its well weird but the gentle feel and worrying rhythm make it probably my favourite song here.
Easily the best 2 Talking Heads albums and I can never quite decide which is better. 'Speaking In Tongues' sounds very dated to me today - some good songs on it like 'Burning Down The House' and 'Naive Melody' but there is no way it's as good as the previous 2.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Nice description there Runcy! The versions on The Name Of This Band Is are great, really great, but I can't wait to hear the studio versions after reading so much about them over the years. Speaking In Tongues was in my Amazon basket originally but I swapped it over for More Songs before clicking on the order. Thought I'd do the Eno trilogy.runcible wrote:Fear of Music and Remain In Light are 2 of the best albums I can think of - although very different in style. Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I've not heard either albums but was told today that both are amazing reissues. I notice one is #3 in Julian Cope's Japrocksampler and the other is #12, yet #12 has a track called 'The Last One' which falls just short of insanity. I had a heads up on these when I was there a couple of weeks ago and I managed to get a copy of both reserved on release.JakeCardigan wrote:Shaun wrote:Did you read the new weekly update? 2 Les Rallizes Denudes rereleases.JakeCardigan wrote:shaun, I've been buying records recently from volcanic tongue too, and it's a pleasure from the amazing weekly emails to the great records arriving!

Yep, this is a magical, good-time album, a very laid back summery vibe going on here, ideal for sunshine and red wine, maybe not as much as a Funkadelicaparliamenthang going on as Part One, but still, very good indeed and Erykah's voice is as awesome as ever...

I just saw them at Caesar's in Windsor. I sort of "know" them. (My aunts were big time groupies of theirs back in the 70's.) This is about the fifth time for me. We met the band backstage (for about 15 minutes) and got a couple of pics. Ian Anderson is an incredible musician.redcloud wrote:For the first time in a couple years I dug out and dusted down 'Aqualung'. Its been on my turntable for the past few days.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
I had the new Sun Araw 'On Patrol' album on the go yesterday but sadly not for long as it made my daughter cry. She's only two and a half and after a few seconds of it starting she asked in a panicked kinda way 'what is it?' then shouted 'scary music' and then the tears came along with a rushed request of 'no, no, stop it, scary!!'. Bless. I'm not sure Cameron Stallone had that affect in mind when he laid it to tape! I tried it again a bit later on but it was the same, skipped a few tracks, the same, lot's of tears, pointing at the cd case 'scary music!'
So there we have it. Maybe I'll get her to 'review' all the new ones I buy.
I gave it a listen with headphones on before bed and it sounds mighty fine. Very dense, dubby, dark, rumbling bass and all manner of weird sounds bubbling away over his reverbed chant. I can see why it freaked lil Eliza so I'll have to be careful next time I play it. Luckily it's the only time my music has done that to her.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
My daughter is 11 months old and has so far been exposed to Magic Lantern, Boris, Beak> and other stuff that I think most young kids would consider "scary music." Hopefully, she'll be used to it by the time she's old enough to realize how weird it is.

Now, my favourite electronic artist is releasing his 4th album under his own name in August.
Matthew Dear is back with Black City
here's a link to a rar file of the opening track http://ghostly.fetchapp.com/get/eimuf
and another for "soil to seed" http://email.ghostly.com/t/y/l/bhruij/dlbhlird/j
I also have 2min snips of every track and...and...it's better than his previous collosal Asa Breed.
For a taste of things to come, watch Matthew Dear's Black City video trailer—a striking, Metropolis-influenced montage of images and Dear's new music—at his official website. Now is Matthew Dear's moment, and it sounds like nothing else.
Exciting times afoot...

Just come back from the record shop with a new album by a band I'd never heard of, Carlton Melton. I was tempted when I saw the write up that my record store provides on most of the albums in there which said it was ideal for fans of Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo and The White Hills. Just got it on now and it sounds awesome. Anyone else heard of these?

I don't have On Patrol, so I put on Heavy Deeds while feeding my daughter. She didn't seem to mind, but my wife asked me to turn it off. She hasn't been enjoying the new Autechre, either.
johnnyboy wrote:I had the new Sun Araw 'On Patrol' album on the go yesterday but sadly not for long as it made my daughter cry.

This is fucking excellent. My copy arrived yesterday - it even has 'God bless Spacemen 3' printed on the cover! The track that's linked to here is on the album and is very typical of what you get.sonic124 wrote:

Chile? What the hell is going on down there? I used to sell these Spacemen-obsessed Brazilian dudes lots of music in the past so it seems South America has that Rugby vibe all over!

Apparently the only song in the US charts ever to have a bass detuning!BzaInSpace wrote:I really love 'Jump Into The Fire'. The bass!!!Goodnightgoodnight wrote:Lots and lots of Harry Nilsson. Anyone else here a fan?
Have you heard Nilsson Sings Newman? It's just wonderful

Incredible song. Seems that LCD Soundsystem based their entire first album's sound off just this single song. I saw them on Saturday and sat there hoping they would cover it to no avail.BzaInSpace wrote:I really love 'Jump Into The Fire'. The bass!!!Goodnightgoodnight wrote:Lots and lots of Harry Nilsson. I was just listening to Michael Jackson's almost forgotten '95 single "Stranger In Moscow." It's a great song that got lost in the scandal, and it's pretty much the blueprint for a huge swathe of Ian Brown's solo career.toomilk wrote:Incredible song.
