This band could quite well be my favourite of the past couple of years.
Had the privilege of seeing them in Manchester earlier in the month, and they quite literally blew my mind. Managed to chat to them afterwards, and are lovely Swedish dudes, to a man.

I just bought the newest "Band of Horses" LP. I only heard snippets from a couple songs online and was quite taken with the melodies. I'm going to sit down and give it a good listen tomorrow.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Black Crowes-Dec 3, 2010 Portland, OR (audience recording of this beautiful show...not soundboard quality but not bad and I've certainly heard a lot worse bootlegs before).
Reo Speedwagon-R.E.O. T.W.O (I picked this up in a ten cent record bin years ago and haven't played it for years. On first glance you might smile at this choice, BUT...do not be fooled, this is a far cry from their '80's "Riding The Storm Out' stuff. This is early 70's American bar "rawk-n-rawl". Honestly, it's a decent effort and easily the best thing they ever did. Give it a chance and it may also give you new found respect for this bands early sound. Don't expect anything that it's not. Just go with the flow and enjoy it for what it is).
Smashing Pumpkins-Gish (Best album they ever did. 'Siamese Dream' was decent too but after that one it went downhill. Great riffs from start to finish and one of the better albums that came out in the wake of grunge).

Beatles - One After 909 [Early Version]
This is one of my favorite Beatles tracks. The one on Let It Be is an album highlight but I much prefer the earlier take from the Anthology. I don't see why it wasn't released; it's much better than plenty of other things from that era.

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet.
God dang it really is a fantastic album. This, and the rest up to Exile are pretty damn faultless, and allows me to forgive everything they've been doing for the past 35 years. And I reckon they're all better than anything The Beatles ever did.

I call foul, my good man. Too much of the Stones is brainless adolescent posturing. A great band, yes, but far beneath the timeless class of the Fab Four.tommy_b wrote:The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet.

(Also, the Stones had some pretty good stuff at least through the end of the 70s -- Beast of Burden, Don't Stop, etc.)

btw, what's the deal with the performance on 'let's spend the night together' from 1982? uninspired utter rubbish, just going through the motions, they have no soul. not impressed with 'shine a light' either. if i were an ubber fan i'd feel cheated seeing the stones in this day an age ie 1982 and up

I saw them in '94 (2 nights) and they were spot on. The last stadium shows I've attended.spzretent wrote: Subsequent tours were fantastic. 1989, 1994, 1997, the Stripped tour. Listening to it now and it's most definitely hypnotizing, no drugs needed on this gem.TheWarmth wrote:Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age, is absolutely insane and, yes, a bit self-indulgent. I love to put on the vinyl and just get completely absorbed by it. Sometimes I have to turn it off because I start to feel too hypnotized.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
After reading recommendations from both Stuart eleKtroniK and one Stuart Braithwaite fae Mogwai, I tracked down the self titled oOoOO (EP) and think it's splendid!
The first song reminds me of MBV as produced by Burial - that good. Ghost vocals over pretty yet messed up beats. All sorts of other sounds whirling round - and big bass!
Rest of the EP follows suite, taking different but similar paths though. Weird digital sounding, analogue textures thing again.

Thanks to the awesome Moggieboy, this Weatherall 'Screamadelica infused' selection has been a source of delight this last week or so. Sure brightened up the treks through snowmageddon!
Anyway, ordered (and recieved!) two albums from stand-out tracks on this mix, being
Johnny Jenkins - Ton Ton Macoute!
Pharoah Sanders - Thembi
The first has the most amazing version of 'Walk On Gilded Splinters' ever and has a cool as hell sleeve.
The second album has 'Astral Travelling' on it, which blew me away on the Weatherall mix, think stripped down Bitches Brew era Miles with lots of spacey panning on horns and tremelo'd Fender Rhodes and distant drumming and twinkling percussion - kinda beautiful. Second track in is heavy noise fury!
Gonna dig deeper through these today.
Oh yeah, it may have been my download, but my copy of this mix jumps from the spine-chilling 'Evening of Light' by Nico straight to Pharoah Sanders, and then ends with Isaac Hayes, so it looks like I missed a few songs. ANybody else have this? Still, thanks again Moggieboy.
Trying to get a good price on the unbelievable Annie Anxiety Bandez: that song 'As I Lie In Your Arms' - as produced by Adrian Sherwood - is just fucking amazing!!! (1 used on Amazon for £25 which is a tad too much at the moment)

I can't wait actually. Should be amazing...pparently there was a 'leaked' version out there some time ago - haven't heard it - which has been reworked and stuff either due to the leak or Disney corporate OST bastards.
Still - new Daft Punk!

I had a tough time with a lot of the material on that J&MC box. Some of the tracks are unbearably abrasive, but I guess that's what a lot of people like about them.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
yeah, some of that early stuff is a bit much. i'm trying to listen to the whole thing in small chunks- it's way too much to take at once. it helps that i'm already familiar with at least half of it.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Been on a huge Velvets & Lou Reed 'kick' this week. Recieved the awesome Peel Slowly & See box from my fiancee for my birthday nearly a year ago and finally started working through the discs on the daily trudgery this week.
Fuck me it's amazing!
I started with disc 4: Although not convinced the 'Closet mix' of the beautiful 3rd The Velvet Underground record is better it definitely suits the quieter songs - voices are way up while the guitars are mixed way down.
Blown away by so many of the extra tracks, such as 'Foggy Notion' - where have you been all my life?
(Nice to hear the inspiration for Primal Scream's 'Skull X' also...)
Also stuff like 'One Of These Days' and 'Hey Mr Rain'. Superb!
Late last week I also listened to Berlin by Lou properly although it had been lying around for ages. A bit touch and go on initial listen - I thought the production was a little too slick with miles-wide drum kit and too little rockin' guitar,,,although that was probably the point. It wasn't quite the 'ultimate downer on record' album popular legend suggests, although it certainly didn't cheer us up on a brutal odyssey just to get to work.
Anyway, once again, Lou and The Velvets...I salute you. A Velvet Underground best of/favourites thread reprise is long overdue -
