I always liked these guys. Their first three albums are excellent (and a couple after that aren't half bad either).
Been listening to them about half an hour ago. Yeah, they're a really awesome band. I need to see them live again, I enjoyed them a lot back in 2008.
I heard one of the songs from their new album recently and thought it was pretty good. I stopped buying their stuff after Up At The Lake, but they have a really impressive catalog: their first five albums are all really, really solid and definitely worth owning.

...a mix I made for a friend (a long-running thing for the past couple years). Just checking it to make sure the transitions between songs do so smoothly. Sounds good so far...

Some choice cuts:

The Zombies - She Loves the Way They Love Her
The Fall - Room to Live
Chris Bell - I am the Cosmos
Otis Redding - I'm a Changed Man
Dean & Britta - Eyes in My Smoke
Orange Juice - Blue Boy
Nikki Sudden - Channel Steamer

"Vini Reilly" by The Durutti Column on original vinyl while trying to decide whether to buy the (re)reissue on Kookydisks (FWIW I already own this on cassette, vinyl, cd, DAT and reissued, but not remastered cd). The re(reissue) comes with a CD of demos, which means that the wrestling with my conscience is fixed....

Have a look here under FAC 244:

http://home.dialix.com/~u3336/factory/index2.html

FWIW, I own two DATs, both are Durutti Column albums, 'Vini Reilly' and 'The Guitar and Other Machines'. I bought both in a great shop off Oldham St in Manchester in about 1989/1990 for buttons. I've never owned a DAT player so both are still sealed. Even I'm disturbed by the levels of obsession that my collecting reaches as I've carted all this stuff around the UK, and then with me to Australia when I emigrated......

the Durutti Column must have one of the most voluminous discographys ever, if you count all the reissues, fanclub only discs, compilations etc. how near are you to complete on them Olan?

Pretty close. I collected Factory issues from ACR, Joy Division, New Order, The Wake and The Durutti Column religiously from 1979, so my house is full of weird stuff that suddenly became valuable a few years ago. From memory, I need a "For Patty" 7 inch to complete the Factory-era stuff. That was the only serious omission from the Record Collector article from way back. I'ld like another flexi for my sandpaper "Return of..." as the original is totally fucked. I'm not bothered about Japanese issues with obi's etc, and don't collect oddities any more (at least not Durutti Column oddities). FWIW I got a thank you in the sleeve notes to "Sunlight turns to Blue...", probably for being a total saddo, but what the hell. I've also got millions of bootlegs, many of which are my own recordings, but that is another story.....

Been uploading a load of stuff on to my replacement I-Pod and discovered a box of old CD's in my wardrobe which I hadn't played for ages. Mainly CD's I bought while at 6th Fom college and Uni in from the late 80's to the early/mid 90's. Its been very enjoyable taking a trip down memory lane with the likes of Paris Angels, Northside, Saint Etienne, Gene, Embrace, Mansun, Suede & Bernard Butler solo, The Beloved, The High and the Bluetones. Ah, happy times and memories indeed. :D

I don't know what it is about that song, but I love it. There are a handful of tracks I like on Take Them On, Howl, and Baby 81 (though I didn't like the last one at all) but they've never been able to touch the first album. Salvation, Rifles, Red Eyes and Tears, etc. are all great songs.

nice bit of nostalgia there Ads!
I actually still really like that first Bernard Butler solo album, its great! a prime slice of tradrock with some great guitar playing. the strings on Not Alone are immense!
second one was poor though.

you see, Salvation isnt one of my faves, but that album does that some of BRMCs greatest songs. good shout for Red Eyes and Tears, dont forget White Palms, Awake.. some of the bands spacier stuff. not sure if its their masterpiece though. Howl is pretty good too.
