I was just listening to the spector-produced menlove ave - some rock´n´roll and some superior versions of songs ending up on walls&bridges.. very good

Fantastic!

That’s almost sacrilege covering that track but damn, they do it justice.

Excellent stuff!

I am on a big New Order jag at the moment, haven’t listened to them this much since about 92! Birthday in the week and contemplating the Retro box set.

Talk Talk - It's a Shame and Dum Dum Girls. Think seeing the Montreux 1986 gigs on Sky Arts is to blame for this.

I thought the same. There's a better version that was in Köln.

Stereolab- Emperor Tomato Ketchup

still not sure what I think about Stereolab. haven't listened to this album in a while and although it sounded better than I remember, I still don't think they quite do it for me. some good moments but wish their sound was a bit meatier

i think i know what you mean. when i saw them live on that ETK tour, they blew the venue apart and it always annoyed me that their live sound was so much better than that captured on the albums...

interesting, I imagine that through a PA the drums would be more forceful and everything maybe a bit more trippy. but the album just sounds a little bit too floaty and tame. shame, cause I like a lot of their aesthetic- great album art, great ideas etc

I suppose a suitable comparison might be early Spiritualized. I bet people that went to gigs after hearing the very ambient Lazer Guided Melodies got their heads blown off

It was more the guitar sound that floored me, but yeah, their sound had so much more to it when they played live... Live, it reminds me of the kinda sound that Wooden Shjips have guitar-wise just now... almost as if its struggling at being contained!!! Good example of this with Stereolab is the version of "Metronomic Underground" on the "ABC Music" album they released compiling all their radio sessions. That version is taken from a John Peel show and the guitar sounds close to how they sounded live... and its fuckin SUBLIME on that track! 8)

I really like quite a bit of their debut (Carnivorous) but have never really been able to get into The Bar At The End of The World. The best thing I got about buying it is that the seller accidently shipped it along with a free copy of the 125 EP!

Can you or someone recommend a few highlights of their second album? I'd like to give it another chance.

Personally, i think Lupine Howl managed to keep some of the better aspects of Spiritualized (rockier, blues-ier side of things) and, although their songs weren't all instant classics, they were pretty bloody good. Live, they were fantastic.

Opener, "A Grave To Go To" is great... reminds me a bit of Spiritualized's "Electricity", but better. Second track "Don't Lose Your Head" is good too. Lovely slide guitar on that. "Gravity's Pull" is a cracker... Sean's harmonica playing is brilliant. Always enjoyed that about him (Would Spiritualized's live versions of "These Blues" on the the Pure Phase tour been anywhere near as good without Sean's harmonica playing?). "Trust Me?" and "Burning Stars" are my favs from the album tho and i think the closer "All I Can Do" is a fitting ending to the album. I always wished that their third album saw the light of day.

Did you ever hear the "You Make Me Feel Like I'm n LSD" track they put up for download? If that was a taster for the 3rd album, it would have been a cracker.

I'd go with Burning Stars as being the standout track.

Just to let you know the 3rd album is almost complete - I'm interviewing Sean in the week so will post the article link - I think it's looking like an October release for the album - Take The Sun & Burn The Earth...

Les Rallizes Denudes ~ Double Heads Live 6xCD box-set.

It's all you need!! How refreshing to phone up such a friendly and knowledgeable record store in Glasgow late on Friday afternoon and have this arrive the following morning. I've listened to disc 1&2 so far and to say this is amazing is a massive understatement. It's scorching. It's white hot. It's (almost) my purchase of a lifetime. I gave up trying to extrapolate which direction the feedback was coming at me from and just absorbed it. This is one band I think I'd have been genuinely frightened of going to see if there were 3 six stringers. Best get on this while it's still available.

Todays revelation:
Genesis post Peter Gabriel.....weak.
Todays thrift store purchase- a UK import of Seconds Out. To be honest I always despised Phil Collins.
Sorry if I offended anyone.
On the other hand I bought a 70's UK import of Sgt. Peppers(non thrift store).
Beatles are pretty good.

After being hit with the shit/heartbreaking/terrifying/WTF!! news that Mrs JB wants to separate after being together 11 years, married 7 + 3 year old kiddy my listening pleasures have all stemmed from old blues and gospel, esp:

FIRE IN MY BONES comp (disc 2 and 3 over and over again)
FRED MCDOWELL - Alan Lomax recordings + Amazing Grace
ARETHA FRANKLIN - Amazing Grace
SKIP JAMES - Best of

Yep, royally screwed at the mo, don't know whether I'm coming or going or whether I want to keep on going. Life sucks a biggie! I may revive that old thread in the 'Other' section about depression and pills as I need some good ole advise right now.....

Johnny mate, thats fucking dreadful news but hang in there man. Are you sure its over or is Mrs JB just wanting a break or can the 2 of you just sit down, talk and try and sort it out? Has this come out of the blue or has it been building up for quite some time? Whatever happens, know that this forum is a good a place as any to air/vent your feelings. Whatever happens, I'm sure there are people close you can turn to and who will look out for you.

Cheers guys,

I now feel like I've somewhat hijacked a listening pleasures thread!

*sorry - deleted it all after rereading and thinking it was too much info - those that read it now know and I'm reading thru a couple of PM's in a mo. Thanks. I've found that my emotional tap has poured out to all and sundry the past week. Emails are fine but thinking that my words will be here forever more is slightly uncomfortable. Life goes on and as many have said "it will get better".*

What Alan says, again.

J - post away, rant away, its all good. Anything that helps has to be encouraged.

Unlike 99.999% of the fuckin' internet, people on here actually care and I think we look out for each other - despite all the sarcasm, wacky humour and several page threads on the merits (or not) of Oasis... or the inexplicable Primal Scream ragging!

I love you all.

Christ, home and rested, just read my post again.......it's a bit long and personal isn't it. May have to severely edit it or delete, will sleep on it. It's the truth though, but the truth hurts.

Taking the kid away for 2 days tomorrow with my family. Sunny Norfolk for a needed break. The (ex?) missus is fine and dandy with it. The almost pleasant vibes are surreal and confusing I must admit. Getting in from work, going in for a kiss and cuddle then thinking "whoah, hang on, can't do that".

Thanks for the kind words and support. One day I'll put faces to these names.

Spiritual Jazz: Esoteric, Modal + Deep Jazz from the Underground 1968-77

This compilation is SO FUCKING GOOD. Highly recommended for any jazz fan. These songs have incredible bounce to them - heavy, driving rhythms. Some of them are just asking to be sampled for hip hop beats.

Woodenwand: My Week Beats Your Year.

Another gem fom Dom and his Great Pop Supplement project. This arrived in the last week or so. It is a vinyl LP, one of 400 pressed, accoustic folk magnificence.

I'm constantly impressed by the quality of the music and product design by GPS. I heartily recommend buying this to everyone on here, but I imagine it is all but sold out by now. I have no idea whatsoever how Dom can break even on the volumes of product he presses, given the sheer beauty of the items he releases.

Sorry Ben, you've lost me there. I don't know what "the reed reference" is. It is late here in Oz and I've had a beer or two, but I've got no idea what you are asking me......

hey man. 'My Week Beats Your Year.' was famously (or infamously) written in the linar notes to 'metal machine music' by lou reed as part of his 'you might not like this but **** you' motiff. i was wondering if the music had any debt to the velvets/lou.

JB -- I suggest listening to Bruce Springsteen's album Tunnel of Love, which is a really thoughtful exploration of the nuances and ambivalences of a troubled relationship. Great album.

no shit.. I´m a huge genesis fan but I wouldn´t touch anything released after 1974 (except the 67-75 box).
Phil - A good drummer and background singer.
Then onto emulating Peters voice, but doing it "perfectly" and without soul; apparently there was a saying in 76 that Collins "sounded more like peter gabriel than peter gabriel" since phil was emulating the records while peter sang differently each time.

..and then the evil goblin said: let there be pop, and there was pop and God heard that some of it was among the most awful pop ever created.

I can't sit idly by while people insult Phil Collins. I'm not very familiar with his catalog, but the man did manage some sublime 80s pop -- I Wish It Would Rain Down, In The Air Tonight, Another Day in Paradise, etc. Credit where credit is due!

Which means no credit is due. Phil Collins produced pure bilge in his solo career - at least he was consistent. All the songs you list are absolute garbage.

This is also a man who ditched his wife by fax - and then ran off with the babysitter. Nice touch.

Sublime? Really? Are you trying to start a flame war? Oh my lord. This seems like a post just for arguments sake.
Phil Collins blows.
End of story.

You forgot You Can't Hurry Love

My parents went to see Genesis at Twickenham Stadium a couple of years ago. I sent a text to my dad half way through the show saying I could hear it coming in through my bathroom window (and I lived a mile and a half away), he replied “lucky you, I can’t hear a fucking thing”

My mum was disappointed that Phil Collins didn’t do any solo stuff, I told her she was probably quite fortunate.

I personally can't abide Genisis, or Phil Collins in particular. The only man with less personality than his Spitting Image puppet. Sassudio (or whatever) was a personal low point for me in terms of the 1980's/early 1990's. Right down there with Paul Young and that ginger tosser that Stock, Aiken and Waterman foisted off on us....can remeber the songs, can't remember the name (please don't remind me).

OK, "sublime" might not have been the right word.

I think some of the intense disdain for Phil Collins might be a generational thing, in terms of what many of you were listening to at the time that probably warranted more of the exposure he got, Spacemen 3 for one. I suppose in some ways he personifies what the alternative scenes were trying to escape from.

But I've always been a fan of the particular strain of self-consciously mature 80s pop, the MOR that was appealing to the aging baby boomer monoculture -- the kind of albums that show Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, and Bruce Springsteen standing thoughtfully in suits, far from their shaggier youths. Rod's cover of "Downtown Train," Springsteen's "One Step Up," Clapton's whole Money & Cigarettes album, Sting's solo career, and yes some Phil Collins. Perhaps it's MOR schlock, perhaps it veers dangerously close to the dentist's office, but it's well-crafted for what it is -- and I'm kind of always amazed that music consciously for adults was able to succeed in the marketplace.

It's an easy target, but this music represented a certain cultural solidity that is sorely missed in our tasteless times. I feel like growing up I caught the tail end of that period that wasn't too cynical for music like this to exist, and wasn't listening when he was the mainstream.

Phil Collins isn't dominating my playlists, but I appreciate him for what he is -- a good craftsman. Music can work on a lot of different levels.

In terms of musicians who were in bands that had some imagination and pulse you've listed some of the worst offenders for making banal chart music when they went solo. Sting/The Police, Rod Stewart/The Faces, Phil Collins/Genesis (I rather like Genesis pre 1975 by the way). For me the mid 80s was the time when music became money-orientated as opposed to music-orientated.

At the time of PC's height I was indeed listening to Spacemen 3, but (wait for it) I bought a copy of some Phil Collins album that had a good review. It was appalling and I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that it once occupied space in my collection. The guy is (or was) an exceptionally good drummer. I saw a solo Peter Gabriel show in the 80s and he appeared and just drummed. I also saw the now legendary one off Genesis/Gabriel reunion in 1982 (which was fantastic) and he drummed for a lot of that. At both he was very good indeed. But solo wise it's all rubbish, sorry.

there is one genesis post-hackett track (from invisible tushie - I bought the cassette release) that is a bit miami vice-cheesy but I like it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hne5B6nBKhg

I do not like air tonite but I do like the use of the gated drums on that and to me it makes the song a lot less horrible than evil goblin´s other hits.

don´t forget it has done great stuff as a drummer outside of genesis too.. it rubs lotion on it´s skin and picks up the drum sticks:

I have been a massive music fan since the late 60's. I was weened on AM radio. Tommy James/Shondells- Crimson & Clover 1st 45 I ever bought. Doors- Touch Me then onto some weird chart psych Richard & The Young Lions- Open Up Your Door.
Went to my first and second shows in middle school Deep Purple then Led Zeppelin in 1973.
I remember in high school music was so shitty- late 70's that I was exploring older stuff and buying Melody Maker. So I got into Neil Young, Cockney Rebel, Procol Harum, and eventually became a massive Stones fan. A lot of my friends were getting into Kansas, Styx, Journey, and later Rush, whom I also have a particular disdain for as well.
I have never been a fan of chart pop. Ever. By the mid 80's and beyond it all became so bland and I think PC flies the flag for that era of pop. It totally seemed like a cash grab.
Its no wonder when punk came along and then again Nevermind in the early 90's that stale, bland music needed a kick in the ass.
By the mid 80's I owned a record shop. By far the most obnoxious fans were Genesis- Abacab and beyond and Phil Collins fans. I used to get accused of having advance releases of these records and holding out. I tried being respectful but eventually it had to come out that not only did I not like either artist but I wouldn't even carry their records.
What brought it all back home was listening to Seconds Out the other night. Just how shitty they sound w/Phil Collins on vocals. On the studio LPs its not mixed as high. I dont mind that mid period of Genesis before they were turned into a pop band. Squonk, Eleventh Earl Of Mar, Ripples are good songs but really haven't aged all that well.
As far as band frontmen that released good solo records? Either Paul McCartney or John Lennon spring to mind. But George Harrison, who was stuck in the background, released the finest post beatles solo lp with All Things Must Pass. So maybe there is hope for the Black Ships yet.

It really pains me to say this, but I think that Black Ships EP sucks. It's issues are primarily a matter of production, in my opinion, as the actual songs are pretty cool, although some of the vocals I could do without (not to mention the Ron Paul samples). The fact that it took them so long to release that EP blows my mind, considering they are all seasoned, professional musicians. If and when the album surfaces (I HIGHLY doubt we'll hear it this year), I will certainly give it a listen, but I don't have high hopes anymore.
