I think this is a song that only works, such as it does, as a shitty mp3.

I disagree.. the woofs sound much warmer and kinder on vinyl.. cozy saint bernard growl.
wish this caveman traditional had been released in the early 70ies - we could have had it in magnificent quadrophonic!!!

mp3:s sound like red-eyed chihuahuas on a three day whiskey bender.. but you have to have heard the vinyl version first or your brain will already have an imprint of the cold version and you wont get it.. ah.. the magic of vinyl and old technology - you simply can not hear the drooling of the st bernard on anything but the vinyl

Pink Floyd - Dogs

The Animals LP is so self-indulgent, but there are some wonderful moments scattered throughout. To me this album is the last place where some classic Floyd still lives.

so true. its hardly ever mentioned. Bummed is my favourite though. wouldn't say I was a huge fan but the Mondays had such a unique sound, I can't think of anyone that sounds like them.

I was listening to some stuff a few weeks ago, and it just didn't grab me much. Live shows can sometimes bring things across better, so i've been re-reviewing them via this... will make another pass on it shortly according to my playlist...

Agreed.

I bought Squirrel & G-Man after seeing the Happy Mondays 3rd on the bill to New Order and A Certain Ratio at Finsbury Park in 1987. Excellent period for Happy Mondays up to and including Bummed. It all went horribly wrong after that with the awful Madchester EP, never bought another thing by them after that.

You are missing out big time Nick! Pills Thrills and Bellyaches is an absolutely incredible album. Absolutely crammed full of fantastic nuggets. Anyone who isn't moved by the wonderful 'Dennis and Lois' needs to listen again...

I don't like Pill & Thrills either I'm afraid. it's far too glossy and lost all those wonderful pounding rhythms.

I think I actually prefer Yes Please.. to that

I regard Pills and Thrills as as good as anything else they did. The sound of a band who seemed to have left their excesses behind (turned out not to be of course) and were making high quality rock pop with a great beat. I can't fault any of it - big singles, fantastic stand out tracks and no fillers in sight.

I was convinced Yes Please would be amazing and prove the critics wrong, Boy was I gutted - it's a disaster.

I love the Pills 'n' Thrills album, which to me is far and away the best thing they ever did. Everything before it seems like a rough draft for what crystallized on that album, and everything after an attempt to recapture its glories.

The live album that came out afterwards is also great.

Right now -- Trying to understand what all the fuss is about on Achtung Baby, but I'm bored.

Bummed is best for me, definately in my top 20 LPs of all time, shit hot memories and a unique album, Squirrel, very very good record, Pills n Thrills, way too poppy, yeah it all went downhill after the madchester ep, (which i like) (the live one that is) Yes Please, awful, apart from Stinkin Thinkin which is superb, saw the Mondays in 88, 89, 90 , 91, and 92 and the last gig i went to was probably the worst gig of my life , Ryder had a bad bad crack habit at the time and it showed, they were shit, hes redeemed himself now though, bit of a genius Shaun in my opinion, a flawed, f**cked up one, but still a top guy

My first live Mondays experience was an odd one. At a Loop Astoria gig in 1988 they shuffled on stage early in the evening and shuffily jammed for 20 minutes before the deluge of beer, glasses and cigarettes from the audience made them stop which was a shame. Then I saw them at ULU and my jaw dropped - Bummed was out by then of course. Just incredible. Loads of Mancunians in there and people were smoking good-sized bongs in the crowd which wasn't something I'd seen before.

I hated Black Grape if I'm honest - like a cartoon band that didn't work. Kermit was a twat - met him at a mate's house one time and he was a complete cock. Curiously my kids loved Shaun Ryder in that Celebrity Jungle nonsense so he's a bit of a hero in our house. And I still play those 1st 3 Mondays albums on a regular basis.

Bummed & Pills And Thrills are equally brilliant to my ears ,totally different ,but both 10/10 ,Bummed pt2 would have been kinda pointless,as for Yes Please ,it aint so bad I kinda like it ,listened to it this afternoon ,enjoyed it ,

listening to Sonic Youth -Screaming Fields Of Sonic Love ,bargain buy £0.68 ,as pointed out buy someone on this site ,cheers laz69,good compilation of early Youth.

I think Yes Please isn't all bad too. its a bit soft and a sounds a bit like session musicians but its got kind of a dejected feel like it's Shauns comedown album or something.

current listening:
Slowdive - Just a Day
Warpaint - Exquisite Corpse EP
Earth - A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-capsular Extraction
GYBE- Hung Over As The Queen In Maida Vale

that last one is a right old treasure for Godspeed fans. its a recording of one of their BBC sessions- they play a great version of Monheim, right into Chart #3. but the real treat is when they jam out the last ringing guitar part on Chart #3 into a new song- its loads of chiming, interlocking guitar parts that spiral up. It doesnt half remind me of Electric Mainline. and its aptly named 'Steve Reich'. i'd not heard it till this week!

Various Slowdive EP's; Slowdive, Holding Our Breath, Morningrise and Outside Your Room. Would still love to get their albums on vinyl. Was just checking them out on Wikipedia when this grabbed my attention:-

While they toured in early 1992, the band began writing songs for a followup album, but the negative coverage Slowdive received in the press affected their songwriting. "[It] did affect us as we were all teenagers at the time," said Scott in a 2009 interview, "[We] couldn't understand why people were so outraged by our sound that they had to tell the NME or whoever that they wanted us dead!" Around 40 songs were recorded and rerecorded as the group became very self-conscious of their writing and how it might be received. When McGee listened to the new material, he subsequently dismissed it, stating "They're all shit." The band discarded all the music and started over. In a 2009 interview, Halstead vividly recalled the incident, "I remember going to start the record in a studio in Bath. Spiritualized had just been there and left a huge Scalextrix in the live room. I remember thinking this was the height of indulgence! Ironically we scrapped everything we recorded...we had to start the record again back in Oxfordshire. We should have just played with the Scalextrix for a month."

 8)

nice one, not aware of this session.
I wouldn't say the band blow me away, they are far too subtle for that . but thats what I like about them- its subtle, insiduous, tasteful music. love the way all the simple parts intertwine together.

Happy Mondays - Bob's Yer Uncle (12" Version)

Love a lot of these remixes.

Quick Mondays question -- does "Harmony" end abruptly at about 4 minutes, or do I have a defective copy?

Haha. Love the emphasis on shuffling...

For me, that first Black Grape album rules. I actually heard that before any Mondays record right enough, and not heard it for many years, but it coincided with my first drinking experiences and I think it might be the perfect album for that. 'Reverend Black Grape' was awesome!
I never even bothered with the one after that as the singles were so lame. That's what crack and shit'll do to you.

Happy Mondays - I still like bits and pieces but I don't know if I like 'em as much as I did - played through Pills N' Thrills... a few months ago for old times sake and if I'm being honest it didn't grab me like it used to - Mark you're correct, 'Dennis & Lois' was always the greatest (and tripped out) tune on the album, but weirdly 'Harmony' did not sound anywhere close to as psychedelic as I remember - guess there's been a lot of heavy head-fuck music under the bridge since then.

It loses massive points too for the truly awful 'Bob's Yer Uncle'. Definitely not sexy music, thanks.

Oh yeah, tonights listen -

Gil Evans Orchestra - Out Of The Cool

Sublime.

I've never thought of Dennis & Lois as a highlight of the album, I'll have to check it out again. Harmony is fantastic but for that strange abrupt ending.

I think you're wrong on Bob's Yer Uncle, though. It's like saying that Spiritualized glorifies heroin use -- it portrays it, yes, but not necessarily in a positive light. I think part of Shaun Ryder's genius is portraying the ambivalence of things -- yes, it's gloriously excessive hedonism, but it's also empty and nihilistic. It's kind of a creepy song, but that's the point -- on one hand, it's an eternal fantasy, but it's also very sad in its way. The tension between the two interpretations to me is what makes the song interesting. It's also catchy and I love the flute. Give it another chance!

Listening to it right now...

I absolutely love Bob's Yer Uncle, and I love the remix 'Bob's Yer Tune' even more. This came out at a time when I was numb to any sort of funky bassline so for that to grab me (and that bass is well heavy) says something.

Had a blast of War On Drug's 'Slave Ambient' which sounded rather good last night.

Also Perplexa's 'Gone Beyond', Hookworms live at the Brudenell and the soundtrack to legendary reggae film 'Rockers'.

might i add that your description of hope's voice is incredibly apt. i recorded her solo show here in chicago and i have to say that it turned out better than i imagined. if you'd like a link, i'd be happy to pass it along. i'm of the opinion that she can do practically no wrong.

I have seen Hope three times. Once with Mazzy on the 'Among My Swan' tour in '96 (Sparklehorse opened for them), then on 'Bavarian Fruit Bread' tour (2001 or 02) and again on her "Through The Devil Softly" tour in '09. I feel privileged to have seen Mazzy Star. They didn't play many dates. During her most recent tour, apart from the projections of dancers etc. she was essentially in the dark. When the lights were on her while she played the glockenspiel she requested them to be off. The crowd in Portland, however, were very respectful. There were times when you could hear a pin drop. She clearly enjoyed herself as she spoke in between songs and even came out for an encore! That's quite a lot for Hope!

I found a lot of links to shows (Opal, Mazzy and Hope) on that MS site. Is this the same show that you have: 10/5/09 Metro?

Stereolab - The Groop Played Space Age Batchelor Pad Music

I really like Stereolab and have most of their stuff, but this and Random Noise Bursts are their only albums that I've really listened to systematically. Two of my biggest musical interests are Spacemen 3 and lounge music, so Stereolab is a perfect combo. In the coming months I aim to become much more familiar with their (vast) discography.

Absolutely, and add 'Refried Ectoplasm' which is Switched on 2, and also Peng. Everyone gets excited about Emperor Tomato Ketchup but I still can't work that album out.

there was a little bit of discussion about Stereolab here recently. the only album I've got is Emperor Tomato Ketchup (which many seem to think it their 'masterpiece') which is okay but I wish it had a bit more of a muscular and robust sound to it. someone recommended the BBC sessions album for that as well the earlier stuff which is apparently a bit more rocky. I guess the albums mentioned fall into that category?

they must be one of the bands with the most recognisable song titles ever (along with Morrissey!!)

When did lou start to sound like bill burroughs on helium?
I think I like mr reeds new voice.. now he just needs some actual music to go with it - something that works for a full track

Absolutely, and add 'Refried Ectoplasm' which is Switched on 2, and also Peng. Everyone gets excited about Emperor Tomato Ketchup but I still can't work that album out.
Ah Runci, give it another go. I was disappointed with Emperor when it came out but over the years it's just gotten better and better.
I would say pick up all of Stereolab's material up to and including Emperor Tomato Ketchup, after that i began to lose interest with each subsequent release as they went more and more for the French cafe vibe rather than the Kraut/Velvets trip.
The BBC sessions double cd is definitely worth picking up. I have a bootleg tape somewhere of the early sessions which included the banter between the band and Mark Radcliffe and Lard. :D

Looks like their site has been hacked (currently looks like a shopping catalog). But, here is the thread with many links to shows:

Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost

Really enjoying what was a random Amazon uk vinyl purchase. Bargain at £5.99, and has turned out to be double heavyweight coloured discs with digital download as well.

Not sure who to compare to musically - It's a great hotchpotch.

Modulated Tones is a bleak and moody instrumental, probably by mostly Sonic, released on How The Blues Shoulda Turned Out. Amazing track. PM me if you want it.
