Great album, (not in the same league as "Gone Beyond" but few are) brilliantly atmospheric music.

Sadly, I'm listening to this on an MP3 player through a set of PC speakers. We are moving so no Hi-Fi for the next couple of months......

Blondie - Blondie. Some great stuff on this record.

Tom Waits - Bad As Me. Lovely packaging with the 12"x12" booklet. I really like some of this though some tracks feel like old songs re-done and other tracks don't do too much for me. It starts well but lulls a bit in the middle. Finishes on a high with New Year's Eve.

Sound of Confusion.

For me, this is a strong contender for best Spacemen 3 album. Extremely underrated.

I thought I'd just listen to Losing Touch... but got sucked into the entire record.

Due to the fact I've been pretty much layed off work now till after Xmas at least (I work for my Unlce's small building firm and we lost out on a big job that up till last Friday was in the bag), and I've been sat at home with a rotten cold, my turntable has been taking a bit of a hit (especially as my girlfriend who usually "works" from home has been away at manager's meetings for the last 2 days  ). This is what has gone on to my "played" pile today and yesterday:-

Early Years - S/T debut (thanks to The Warmth for sending this over from the States)
Warlocks - Heavy Deavy Skull Lover (So Paranoid, Moving Mountains and Slip Beneath are up there with the best they've done)
Black Angels - Phosphene Dream (has anyone else got this on vinyl?...the whole thing is so well presented)
Wooden Shjips - West (its hard to get in to the pounding drone when you've got man-flu  )
Neil Young - On The Beach (sounds even better every time I play it!)
Bjork - Biophilia (bought it for my girlfriend but thought I'd give it a go...hard work, but rewarding)
Spiritualized - Songs in A & E (double green vinyl looks and sounds great :D )
Bon Iver - Bon Iver (I can understand why this is up there on lots of end of year best of lists...sublime)
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Ragged Glory (YEEAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! 8) )
Hookworms - S/T EP (man, does this forum attract some great musicians/bands)
Panda Bear - Tomboy (you can definitely hear Sonic's input...another great LP of 2011)
The Sundays - Reading, Writing & Aritmetic (a classic, bought cheap on E-Bay and sounding brilliant)

got to agree ,not underrated by me ,was in a record shop last week and got talking to the dude behind the counter ,turns out he`s in The Cosmic Dead ,and we were speaking about this album ,which he thought was weak and kinda derivative ,told him he`s been listening to it on the wrong drugs -yeah ,I know their not big or clever ,but thats what you do when your young, and behind that big and impressive beard he was sporting ,young he was -he was playing some early Dandy Warhols thing ,that I learned isn`t totally shit ,as I thought previously, may have to check it out ,for by that seemed like a thoroughly nice fella.

Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Wilco - The Whole Love
Tom Waits - Bad As Me
Spectrum - War Sucks 12"
Beck - The Information

And selected tracks form Spectrum's Soul Kiss which blew me away, as always.

Lovecraft-'Valley of the Moon'. (1969/70 LP that is full of crisp, west coast flowing acid rock with a touch of country and a tad of funk. Very good).

Spirit-'Eventide' (b-sides, outtakes and rarities assembled together by Sundazed Records).

Rich Robinson - Through A Crooked Sun. Superb solo effort from Black Crowes guitarist.
Black Crowes - Amorica. Absolutely magnificent.
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk. Coke-fueled epic, jam-pack full of nuggets. Lindsay Buckingham's 2 Cajun punk tracks are crackers and the flat-on-your-back tripped-out classic 'That's All For Everyone' is quite tremendous.
Tjutjuna. No idea what it's called but it's excellent.
Various - One Step Beyond 45 Classic Ska Hits. Irresistible.

Totally agree. I absolutely LOVE this album from start to finish. Robinson is not reinventing the wheel but what he has created is an exceptionally well crafted, beautifully played and very well written album. This album and Perplexa's-'Gone Beyond' receive my votes for albums of the year.

I'm currently listening to:

The Serpent Power-S/T (1967 acid folk from San Francisco...a very, very stoned album).

Nice one.

Have you heard his first album, 'Carnival of Life' (1968)? Brilliant Californian pop/psych album with some wonderful fuzz guitar laced throughout. I stumbled upon it in a coffee shop that had a bin of used records next to the till! 8)

radiohead - king of limbs, live in the basement
shits on the actual album, plus has songs which should have been on said album. i know opinion on here is highly polarised (leaning towards a general loathing) but this is really good stuff

Live From The Basement is badass, although I certainly wouldn't say it shits on the studio version of the album. I have a feeling Staircase and The Daily Mail weren't yet ready/arranged by the time they finished recording the album, which is why they didn't make it on there. They are putting out a single with those two songs on it in January and I think it's available digitally now.

I currently am playing the TKOL remix album, which is far more thrilling than I imagined it might be.

Bardo Pond/Carlton Melton split 12" (strictly limited clear vinyl edition too 8) ) which I picked up at Rough Trade in London over the weekend (along with a couple of other bits of vinyl which my girlfriend is giving to various family members to give back to me for Christmas... and yes, before anyone says anything, I am an only child   ).

By the way, has anyone else got this and managed to do a vinyl transfer as, yet again, they have forgotten/decided not to include a download code (I guess I'm looking to you again, Warmth, for this?).

Pussy - Plays

Excellent UK psychedelic/prog album from 1969. I think this was their only album with this name. It's dated in every way but a wonderful example of just how creative this time period was.

Sorry, I have not purchased a copy of this one. If you were in the U.S., I would suggest mailing it to me, but it'd be too expensive to do overseas.

Edit: This seems to be in stock at Aquarius Records in SF, so I ordered a copy. It is pretty common for their website not to be up to date, so hopefully they won't email me saying that it's now sold out. I'll keep you posted.

strange! i heard the remix album and i hated it. i think there was one, maybe two tracks i liked and the rest just seemed like a waste of time.

i like TKOL, but feel like some of it really works better live.. i think i've said this before, but something in the production of the more recent radiohead albums leaves me cold. they have an awesome live uh...'vibe'? that gets flattened on record. i guess TKOL more than others felt like a thom-solo album, with some input from jonny. it's just nice to hear the band playing it.

also, i guess i was (like many, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZsrnRVQDFU) a bit miffed at how short the original album seemed considering how many great songs they had seemingly ready to go on it. but you're right, tracks like 'the present tense' and 'the daily mail' were around but not in the form they wanted. to be honest, given the length of time it took, i'd prefer for them to have waited til more tracks were ready and put them on the album too, rather than releasing the album then soon after 4 tracks not on it. seems a little cheeky! but artistic license, i guess. and who am i to tell them what should/shouldn't go on the album?

I can imagine a lot of people disliking the remixes. There are some I could do without, but for the most part I think they are very creative and engaging. The Blawan remix of "Bloom" is an absolute monster.

As for TKOL itself, it is a bit short, but I like the fact that it's so easy to listen to from start to finish. Too many albums these days are sprawling and too difficult to digest in one sitting. I will also say that I don't think the addition of "The Butcher" or "Supercollider" would have made the album any better. I like "The Daily Mail" and "Staircase" quite a bit, though, and I could see how they would have fit. I have a feeling they'll never do official studio versions of those two songs since the From The Basement versions are so fully realized.

i don't think the blawan mix was one that i liked. to me it's just boring and repetitious...doesnt seem to really do anything. but each to his own!

maybe you're right that it's good to keep TKOL short. i am very much an album person and know what you mean about epic albums being too much sometimes. i'm also sure it was a very deliberate move of them to try and counter the whole download/ipod way of listening track by track by releasing something that has a distinct and deliberate arc to it. and i have no problem with short albums per se, i just felt like this one, while dense, would really have benefited from another track or two, maybe one in place of give up the ghost (which feels like a b-side to me)?

agreed that there's no real need to rerecord staircase or the daily mail. those versions are amazing!

hey, yeah it strikes me as something of a lost treasure and certainly shows why BSP are a cut above your average indie band. it works as a 'soundtrack' or 'concept' album, but also has some real standout tunes. 'boy vertiginous' gets me every time...
sorry, i missed your post from the gigs section, but yeah i'll probably go to just one of these too. gonna keep an eye on their website and see if they give any clues about what they're doing for each one.. nice to see a band doing something so interesting to be honest. can you imagine if spz did the same thing? i would be first in line for a 'season ticket', haha :D

Throbbing Gristle: 20 Jazz Funk Greats: I wasn't familiar with this band, but I read a review of the reissues and got this off of a friend. It's kinda cool, but I don't think I'm going to go out and buy anything by them.

I haven't heard this one yet, but I like Arab Strap a lot (Philophobia is absolutely essential) and the Moffat / Wells album that came out this year is excellent.
Just buy it you wont be dissapointed has some wonderful stuff on it including a couple of real singalong drunken anthems :D

The Saints - (I'm) Stranded. I forgot how devastating this album is. These guys predated UK punk and in some style. The combination of Ed Kuepper's blisteringly aggressive guitar and Chris Bailey's syrup-coated vocals is something else.

my tiny fan heater as i try to get dry after my shower, brrrrrr
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'
