Oh man, Spiritualized have just made me drop the bah humbug attitude I have been carrying around all day. I had forgotten that this was the last song played at the Barbican a couple of years back.

Lovely stuff.

(man, these dudes were smoking a lot when they recorded this LP. At times it is soulful and funky while other times it is just weird and goofy).

Very sweet indeed! Their second LP is a corker too. The first is mean, thick and gritty while the second is more soulful. Both are wonderful albums.

shits on the actual album, plus has songs which should have been on said album. i know opinion on here is highly polarised (leaning towards a general loathing) but this is really good stuff
finally picked this up as this is what i'd suspected (i found 'king of limbs' a bit disappointing). you are 100% correct. the songs really come to life- they are a bit listless on the record, but here they pop. with the three extra songs it actually seems like a full-length album.

A day of pottering - cleaning the oven, unblocking the bathroom sink, dismantling Christmas stuff - so a soundtrack of The Band's 'Music From Big Pink' and 'The Band' got it all done in no time at all.

On a massive Led Zeppelin kick the now.

So far this week, in a frankly brutal series of post new years shifts I have came up and gone down again with
Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II and yesterday, III.

However, the awesome 'Moby Dick', a track I never cared for in the past, is getting repeat plays. Can any Zep freaks confirm if Bonham is using his hands until about half way through? Sounds like that to me.

...must be that time of year, when a bit of feral Valhalla blues courtesy of Page, Plant, Bonham & Jones is required to shake away the cobwebs...

Decided to dig out some records I haven't listened to in a long time.

First up:

Black Oak Arkansas - S/T (1971)

Listened to the first two songs but couldn't handle any more of it! Now I know why I tucked this fucker away and haven't listened to it since I was probably 17 years old. Fuck me, Jim Dandy's voice was just terrible! BOA receive my nod for one of THE WORST bands ever!!

no, it was keanu reeves type 'woah!' ..as in, 'woah, this song is pretty heavy' haha...
i'm pretty sure they just have the one album. as i said, i only investigated because of the other artist connections, and to me they seemed too much on the side of cheesy easy listening/chillout/new age stuff. not wishing to be sexist, but maybe one for the ladies?
...but as i was saying, the last 3/4 tracks really grabbed me because they seemed more psychedelic. the one i linked to, the one with nels on cosmic guitar (that i can't link to), there's also a big epic ballad type track which i love. i feel like it's a guilty pleasure, but here you are anyway.. wait til it kicks off in the second half.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK6IEGkQ_dg
anyway, if you're interest i suggest trying to find a download first, maybe just for the bonus track...

Betty Davis - Nasty Gal

Seriously sexy, sultry and downright nasty funk from Miles Davis' wife (who he divorced because she was shagging Hendrix and Sly Stone). Three great albums from this diva who shreds her lungs like Tina Turner. All are good but this one is the best. Fucking brilliant stuff.

What do you think of this lot? 'Alabama Bound' is a wonderful song....but many of the others are short 3 minute ditties. Still, they have an endearing quality about them.

I got it as a result of Will Carruthers sticking Alabama Bound on his Facebook and I thought it sounded fantastic. Always wanted to hear more of these guys. 'Ditties' is a good description of a lot of their stuff - snappy songs with a 20s/30s feel some of the time. The CD is a fun listen - I like their take on 'Codine' too.

Stick with it. It's a wonderful record. Full of crisp, flowing west coast acid rock (yet, they were from the midwest!).

Does the album you bought have any live stuff on it? I have a live 10 minute version of 'Alabama Bound' that is gloriously psychedelic. You're right on 'Codine'. Their version is great.

I don't think so. It was complicated finding any of their stuff at a reasonable prices so I bought the Big Beat CD which was reasonably priced. I'd like to hear that live version though.

Blue Cheer - 'Outsideinside'.

This album is skull crushingly heavy and way ahead of its time. I think even more than their 1st LP, this one pretty much set the blueprint for metal, stoner rock and even grunge. Side one is an absolute monster.

Also just found a Sleepy Sun show from Manchester in 2010... not quite as good quality as the St Louis show, but still pretty good. I've split the single FLAC file into tracks and am currently trying to ZIP it up. I'll post a link to it once i upload it.

there's nothing better than a really good quality live bootleg sometimes is there? sometimes a superior quality one is actually better than an official 'live' album, with all the overdubs/polishing etc gubbins

i'd love to get hold of this Sleepy Sun one. I saw them live at ATP a couple of years back and it was really good.

Strangely enough, I've just had this on too... there are some stomach shuddering bass sections aren't there?!
Yes indeed! We have a fantastic Bose Acoustimass system in the kitchen with the large bass unit under a counter. Last night as Ancient Romans rumbled about I had to get some food out of the fridge. The bass in the fridge was ludicrous - to the point where I asked my other half to stick her head in there to enjoy the effects too. Quite remarkable!

The new album from the big pink.

sadly, it's pretty mediocre. only a few tracks that make much of an impression.

My favorite '5' album.

Gone is John Sinclair and his politics and what we are left with is a band who found THEIR voice. Brilliant.
