The Vines had huge potential. There are some amazing, Beatle-esque songs on that debut album and even the Nirvana-inspired tracks are pretty solid. Sadly, everything they released after that was horrible.

I had this conversation the other day. You see, i think the debut was absolute class and so hard to better. But i think 'Winning Days' is a great album with top songs on it such as, 'Winning days', 'Rainfall', 'Amnesia' & the dreamy 'Sun child'. 'Vision Valley' is a little more hit and miss granted, but still boasts 'Vision valley', 'Gross out' & 'Spaceship' as amazing songs. 'Melodia' is still growing on me, but it too has some nice sounding songs. Just my opinion of course!

Yeah, you're right, there are some great songs on Winning Days, especially the title track, but as I recall, I only liked about half of the album. Vision Valley really put me off of them. I didn't like hardly any of that album and I haven't heard the newest one.

I am currently loving this lp, i'd never really heard any of his stuff before, (only singing a song in the morning, due to the Syd connection) but im glad i gave it a go, its great, loads of different, stoned, English psychedelic songs that make you smile.....and coincidently i was painting bananas just before i got the lp :)

..guess I was expecting a more progressive canterbury style like the first soft machine since it is the same people and only months after ayers left that band.
but what can I say? I´ve listened to it twice today and I should stop trusting first impressions I had as a kid.
This is a very delicate banana indeed. Thank you solar for making me give it another chance! :D

not sure youll like it but you may want to check out the first soft machine album from 68.
It´s the same people (except the pianist) but a different style or energy.. and wyatt sings more than ayers of course.

A friend of mine recommended this to me. Right in my wheelhouse. Dont know much about this band other than the main guy is a Portland legend. This cd is fantastic. That youtube clip doesn't really do this record justice. I have it on right now and the first three tracks are absolutely superb. Like a cross between some of Jason's Spacemen stuff and Speck Mountain. And it drones along just in the right places.

I should add the packaging is superb too. No plastic!

Ah, The Great Northwest! Good band. Yep, Brian Coates is the main "legend" but the band has seen several PDX "legends" come through and play with them either on record, in the studio or live. Various Dandies, Matt Hollywood as well as Rick Bain to name a few.

That's the only one I have too.

If you like them it's worth picking up Rick Bain's couple solo albums or his latest project, Sundown Machine. Bain's 'Crooked Autumn Sun' is a perfect place to begin. It falls somewhere between early Dandy's, the High Violets and Elliot Smith. Definitely has that "Portland sound". Sundown Machine are a little more "rawk" but still has that layered PDX drone sound.

Another Portland band worth namedropping in here are The Upsidedown.

Galaxie 500 -- Today

Wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I gave it a listen -- and was extremely impressed! What a great band. I've gone ahead and tracked down their otheer 2 studio LPs.

Has anyone got any recommendations of their other stuff -- Luna, side projects, etc. ?

Re: Galaxie 500 side projects, i love Luna; really good stuff. Think its Deans vocals that do it for me, but they have some great songs. Try and track down the Luna live album that was released, its excellent, as well as the studio albums. I enjoyed the Damon & Naomi albums, in particular the album they did with Ghost, but i found it a little too much like Galaxie 500 in places, so not my fav of them all. Dean & Britta's albums are fantastic though. Both their vocals work really well together and the songs are magical!

Your so lucky to be exposed to Galaxie 500 for first time.
In this tree, in terms of greatness and listening pleasure, they are rated way up there with Spacemen 3,

I find that really interesting. I like Galaxie 500 and was lucky enough to see them live at ULU with Kramer on the mixing desk - just about the best sound I have ever heard at a gig. I like Luna too. Having said that the issue I have with G500 generally is the vocals which I've always thought very second rate. Dean sings better in Luna but his voice, for me, is the weak link.

I hear what your saying but imo that off key, broken eerie sound in his vocals, just adds so much more to the appeal of their music

As an aside; Damon & Naomi are playing at Mono (Glasgow) soonish.

I liked Galaxie 500 but are a band I've not listened too in ages.

I know a few people here have an idea of my likes, so any suggestions would be greatly looked into...

Not bought a lot of new stuff myself lately, but one i was very impressed with was Valgeir Sigurdsson's 'Draumalandid' (Dreamland). It's a soundtrack to a film, but a great album of instrumental tracks. Really nice to relax and listen to.

MGMT's new album is still growing, not what i expected, but not bad.

'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

Haven't heard stuff as emotive since the second Burial album. Doomy slowed down EBM from the new genre for the year - "Witch House"

Head to Disaro(label) myspace for all the artisits associated

A day laid on the sofa listening to great music,
The Sunday nights junior kimbrough tribute album
Bull of the woods by 13th floor elevators
Platoon by Magic Lantern and the accompanying seven inch
The new Black Keys single - tighten up
Wooden Wand and the Omen Bones band
And now the anthology of British blues volume 2
A great day..

OK, so this proved extremely difficult to get a hold of. Something to do with only 100 being pressed; Volcanic Tongue were the UK stockists but they went as soon as they came and the Olde English Spelling Blog was sold out too. If anyone wants a tame 128Kbps version of this, pm me. It really is lush and creepy...perfect.

I recall reading about o0o00 recently via the weekly email update from VT and liked what I read but didn't follow it up. They are great at VT (by the way, some of these limited edition 7 inch vinyls talked about on here are often available there) and I'm looking forward to visiting them in two weeks time. Who was it that you spoke to, Stuart? Just remembered I must phone them tomorrow regarding Masami Kawaguchi’s New Rock Syndicate which is something to do with Glasgow's Smoke Jaguar. Do you know anything about them?

Volcanic Tongue wrote: Yow – part of a batch of releases on the newly-activated Nyali Recordings imprint run by Glasgow’s Smoke Jaguar, Another Side Of New Rock Syndicate presents the most ferociously beautiful music recorded by Masami Kawaguchi under the Rock Syndicate banner. Recorded live in Tokyo, the set explodes into life with “Why?”, a brutalist psych construction that demolishes time and space with all of the power of early Fushitsusha or Kousokuya. Kawaguchi’s guitar sounds magnificent, towering over the drums and bass and casting a black shadow over the whole group. The set is really varied, moving from the opening metal salvo through zones of blissed acid folk and squealing post-Rallizes acid, all topped off with Kawaguchi’s beautifully languorous vocals. Can’t recall spinning a Japanese underground side of late that so perfectly articulates everything I love about the whole PSF post-everything psych aesthetic and if that ever meant anything to you, you need to hear this. Packaged in art card sleeves with paste-on art in a hand-numbered in an edition of only 125 copies. Highly recommended.

I have not heard of that Shaun but isn't every review lovingly orated? The whole Japanese psych/improv area is a thing that would render me exhausted. So damn much. I spoke to Heather...well pestered her to be honest and brown-nosed her fella' review of o0o00 in this months Wire. Seemed to do the trick. I'm hoping they'l stock Svarte Greiner new (C30 remaster) album at the end of the month. I dropped your name in too the mix also saying that you enthused about there service and general helpfulness; perhaps you'll get a wee cup of tea next time your in.

I just phoned them up and managed to score a copy of that Japanese slice of psych so I'll have that no later than Thursday. Yes, every review is wonderfully written. I read every single one on the weekly update even though I'll probably never buy a cassette or LP from them. And anything with a nod to the Rallizes is an instant eye catcher. HA. thanks for the name drop Stuart.
