M83? Before The Dawn Heals Us is one of the best albums of recent years. Hated that newest one though, euro pop nonsense.

Derdang Derdang is a great album. There's no open stomp like Dart For My Sweetheart or Cherry Lips on the new album. I'm finding it hard to describe it when I'm asked so......spunder wrote:cant wait to hear this. loved derdang derdang.johnnyboy wrote:Archie Bronson Outfit - Coconut - 'tis a marvellous beast. sorry, i don't know about the details, but think you've already known it from thier self-titled album originally released in 2007, and that was "repressed" last month. http://www.midheaven.com/item/magic-lan ... lantern-lp
unfortunatelly i hadn't known this great band until recently, and now can't wait for their forthcoming album "platoon".

Hi Guys/Girls
On the go at the mo':
Big Star - Radio City - phenomenal album, how did they pass me by for so long;
Dinosaur jr - Green Mind - a lost classic
Daniel Johnston - 1990 - 2 geniuses collide, Johnston and Kramer
Lone Pigeon - Concubine Rice - listened to it 100 times, still surprised by it
Royal Trux - Sweet Sixteen - turbo charged scuzz rock
Ride - early eps - re-exploring my youth, what a great band.

Oasis - Standing On The Shoulder of Giants Demos.
The album is already underrated, in my view, but a lot of the songs are way better with Noel's hangdog singing than Liam's obnoxious sneer. I think I'd like Oasis much more if Noel sung pretty much everything -- Liam can have Don't Look Back In Anger.

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
Any post-1987 Michael Jackson album is bound to be wildly inconsistent, but there's a bunch of great material buried on his latter-day releases. Unbreakable makes a great workout track.jack white wrote:wtf??jadams501 wrote:Michael Jackson - Unbreakable

Aretha Franklin - Amazing Grace live album '72.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
That's the first Aretha album I ever bought -- the deluxe edition actually -- and to be honest I've never been able to get into it. As with her other live stuff I've heard, my experience is that there's too much shouting and it all seemed very self-indulgent, so I went scurrying off to her studio cuts, which I much prefer.johnnyboy wrote:Aretha Franklin - Amazing Grace live album '72.
Am I missing something? What track would you recommend I give a second chance?

If you are into Arethra Franklin, Sister Rosetta was a huge influence. Check out her guitar playing on an SG starting at around 1:40 into the video. Twangtastic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7lN1R2LP-4

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
going through a phase of converting old tapes of shows that i recorded back in 2000-01. listened to my first sigur ros show, which was at the vic in september of 2001, then started listening to my first mogwai show, which was at the granada in lawrence, ks in june of 2001. they sound surprisingly good considering the equipment i used.
Re: What Are You Listening To Now?
it was indeed. it was a pretty intense show- a very good crowd. i remember my wife and i hadn't heard if it was canceled or not and we were driving up from kansas city (about a 9-hour drive). on the way up we were definitely wondering if we wouldn't get the most disappointing news once we got there, but no, it went on. pretty much everyone there was over the moon grateful that they had still come to play despite 9/11. we had wanted to see nick cave as well on that trip because he was scheduled to play the next night, but that was canceled.spzretent wrote:I had tickets for Sigur Ros in 2001. It was the week after 9-11. Every show was cancelled but that one. I found out two weeks later.

Velvet Underground - What Goes On
Like some of Serge Gainbourg's stuff from the time, it still sounds so fresh that it's hard to believe it's 40 years old.

Jimi Hendrix-Valleys of Neptune
Twelve tracks recorded between '69-'70. All are unreleased or have since been fully restored to original mixes by the Hendrix Foundation (a couple tracks were pillaged in early 70's after his death and re-mixed, horns added etc. they reappear here restored to original mix as done by Jimi and Eddie Kramer). For those who love the direction Jimi was going after "Electric Ladyland" this is more of the same. Great chugging, driving funky blues rock and roll with loads of that late 60's wah-wah. In the same vein as the "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" LP.

Bob Dylan - Saved
Dylan's born-again work is often slagged off, I suspect because the baby boomers who ran music publications at the time and set the conventional wisdom can't stand their beloved counter-culture icon going his own way and refusing to be pigeonholed for their romanticized sepia-toned nostalgia trips. But the highlights from Dylan's 3 Christian albums are some of his best stuff and can stand proudly with anything from his whole career.
