Mark Lanegan Band: No Bells on Sunday.

Picked this up today at Probe. On first listen it is a really nice 5-track e.p./mini-album. Upon first listen, it hasn't got the punch/impact/grip of the material on Blues Funeral, but is really quite excellent all the same. It was a nice surprise to find it as I knew nothing about this record. I've been either snowed under at work or traveling for the last six weeks so much has passed me by ( :D that is great too).

Edit: The new White Hills album also arrived. It is quite a change of direction from the last few records which is welcome as they had gone off the boil for me, particularly live.. This record is not bad at all, far more abstract and atmospheric rather than pounding and focused on loud guitar riffs.

I'm finding it hard, if not impossible to shake off the fantastic summer "banger" 'Fancy' by Iggy Azealia and Charlie XCX. Pure pop badness, but hearing it with the proper bass was pretty amazing.

Anyway. Today it's been that and some of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours - the 2013 remaster, and Prince Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic.

Also a drive enhanced immeasurably by the amazing DJ Sneak's epic Fabric 62 epic house mix.

Entrance- Prayer of Death.. kind of doomy blues with a macabre feel and touches of psych in places. perhaps moments where it feels a bit contrived (can almost hear shades of Jack White sometimes) but rather enjoying it.
this title track is rather stirring!

finally got a chance to sit down and listen to the stream of 'commune' by goat. subpop emailed me that the link was active a week ago and i just haven't had the time to sit down at a computer for an hour to listen to it. i like it- i have the luxury of not having a lot of preconceptions about the band.

i've been listening to the new ty segall a lot over the past few days, too- i know i'm saying that about every one of his records, but i wasn't that excited about 'manipulator' but it might be my favorite of his. it's like an expanded version of 'twins' with more diverse songwriting, cleaner and clearer production and more fleshed-out arrangements. plus the guitars still have fuzzy teeth.

The new Earth record.

It FUCKING ROCKS. Imagine combining the early '90's Earth with the kind of stuff they were doing on Hibernaculum and The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull and you're not far off. Guest vocals from Mark Lanegan and others. I'm two tracks in and absolutely LOVING it. Dylan Carlson really is one of my musical heroes.

Mogwai: Zidane on 2xLP

I only ever owned this on CD previously, and it never really grabbed me as an album. I had the impression it was one-paced and dull. On Monday I found an eBay listing for the vinyl reissue at £18 including delivery so made the purchase.

I'm really enjoying the music. It is one-paced, but it is also extremely atmospheric. I can't believe how much I've undervalued this album. I suspect the CD is very poor as compression would destroy the subtlety of the music......it .can't be my judgement, can it? :?

the new Robert Plant album is sounding pretty fine to me.. little of the bombast of Zep, quite varied, African influences without smacking of hip cultural exploitation, and quite trippy in its own way..

Yep, me too. It's absolutely majestic and the guest vocals suit the songs so well. Dylan Carlson is a genius as far as I'm concerned, one of the great unsung guitar heroes. His command of tone, space, feedback, distortion and sustain is superlative, and his live guitar sound blows me away every time - so fierce and loud yet crystal clear at the same time.

Stereolab -Refried Ectoplasm: Switched On, Vol.2, as a compilation, how good is this ? :D Couldn`t claim to speak for the rest of their catalogue as I only own Emperor Tomato Ketchup - is that really its name? - apart from this comp. but it really is fantastic, everything you thought they might be, with tons of `Kraut` `pop` and a singularity of thought, and execution, that makes it seem like a pre-planned and thought out concept. When its this joyful, and fucking good, who cares about that though?

The free cd which comes with this months Shindig magazine is really good if you like your space rock and psych.

http://www.shindig-magazine.com/SD42.html

It's mixed by Cherrystones from the Rocket Recordings catalogue.

FREE CD
LIMITED EDITION CHERRYSTONES REMIX CD FEATURING • GOAT • GNOD • LAY LLAMAS • TEETH OF THE SEA • HILLS • THE HEADS • ANTHROPROPHH

There's no actual track listing so I have no idea as to who is playing what, except for Hide From The Sun by Goat. Would love to know more. The first 15-20 mins or so will appeal to those here who like it heavy and freaky. The last third has more electronics going on. Really good stuff I must say.

yep good stuff this, had it on the other night! wish there was a tracklisting but definitely recognise some Goat as well as Teeth of The Sea. I was impressed by the magazine too, obviously covers a lot of psych but also other interesting stuff. will definitely buy again.

I recognised a Gnod track on that Shindig cd as well having played them a bit via the interweb airwaves. It's led me nicely onto stuff like White Hills too which is cool. I know they're big favs on here amongst some but I'd never really checked them out so ended up buying their album with Gnod for a fiver from the Rocket Recordings site.

Just listening to the new Earth album Primitive & Deadly via youtube. Really good! Again, a band I've read about loads over the years but never actually listened to. I nearly bought their Bees Made Honey album years back out of curiosity but never did. Really liking what I'm hearing on the new one, suiting my mood nicely at work.

If any Earth experts want to recommend a best entry point album then I'm all ears.

Pretty Lightning: Cycle of the Seasons.

Found on Bandcamp. As far as I can tell it is two German blokes doing a fantastic job of playing a swampy mixture of psyche, garage and blues...(sort of). Anyway, it refreshes the parts other downloads can't reach 8) and was convincing enough for me to shell out for their LP.

The trio of Fiend albums released by Brendan O'Hare (of Telstar Ponies, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub and Macrocosmica fame). A brilliant collection of noisey freaked out guitars and droned out electronics. Lots of similarities in places to some of the current favourites (Cosmic Dead, Carlton Melton, Anthroprophh, etc) and all from 15 years ago! Superb listening...

J Mascis - Tied T o A Star (just as good at the softer side of things as he is with Dinosaur Jr)

Bonnie Prince Billy - Singers Grave A Sea Of Tongues (managed to snag the ultra ltd edition with the bonus 8 track LP, very pleased as thought I'd missed the boat on this one) :D Anybody else pick one of these up and if so did it have a download code as mine doesn't appear to have one. It's not advertised with one but just thought was the norm these days :?

the new Steve Gunn album is sounding pretty fine.. I really enjoyed the last one (Time Off) which was a real grower.. folk but with a rolling, flowing avant-rock sensibility. This new one has not only upped the songwriting calibre but has this fantastic closing track

Went into town today to buy the recent album by The Flies, which I keep forgetting about. As luck would have it Probe were out of stock, so I ordered a copy and instead I bought this today on white vinyl:

Image

Really enjoying it too. It has a mid-1980's post-punk vibe going for it which suits my current nostalgic mood. I have to say that the cover art is appallingly bad, so far past awful that it beggars belief. I assume that either it is a some sort of artistic pastiche that is far too subtle for the likes of me to detect or alternatively it is a crap sleeve :D .

Well worth picking up though even if the downloads are MP3s  .

I'm puzzled by all the admiration (on this site and one other music site I frequent) for Mark Lanegan. His contributions on the latest Earth release were just plain bad and marred an almost perfect album. I don't get it.
Anyways, I'm listening to this right now because I didn't have the energy to look for something else-

What albums? I love Fuxa and have pretty much all of them apart from the new one. Fuxa 2000, and 3 Field Rotation are possibly my favourites... Workerbee 5000 is such an amazing track... highlights the amazing bass playing of Willie B!

See, that's that's the thing, I really like that artwork.

What was the last album? Some awful wallpaper pattern? Naw, I like this. Gotta hear the thing now.

Different strokes...

I dunno, I liked how he sounded w/ Screaming Trees, but lately he just sounds tired.
