Just listened to "Village Idiot Dope", Julian Cope's latest album with his new Dope project:

http://www.headheritage.co.uk/merchandiser/item/HH33/

and because my digital jukebox thingamajig plays albums in alphabetical order if I don't intervene, I'm now listening to "Vintage Violence" by John Cale.

Beach Boys - Carl and the Passions. Probably one of the more underrated BB records of the early 70s. Haven't heard it in years. It's surprisingly good. Best track is without a doubt "All This is That", which is nothing short of glorious. They played it the last time I saw them live during the 50-year anniversary, in 2012 I think. Great stuff!

also recently, The Kinks- Something Else, something I just pick out on Spotify and can`t stop listening to what an amazing album, a pure joy, also Kendrick Lamar - Damn & TPAB been listening to these two of and on for a couple of yrs now but took my 15 yr old to see him last week so we both had heavy Kendrick playlists the last week or so, great show by the way in case you were wondering, extortionate, but great.

Spiritualized Tokyo show from last week. Holy moly!!! Its set me right up for some live shows. The setlist works so well, so much so that i don't even mind Broken Heart being dropped in there. So often a pace killer for me, but this works well into Perfect Miracle. New songs sound great and i'm sitting here listening again just imagining how good it will sound standing in front of it all.

Possibly the most beautiful song i've heard in a while...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFYXNs8sZL8

Something about this duo, as a pair, that really works. The stripped down simplicity of their songs/collaborations is sooo good, yet the songs are so rich and involving that you can't help just get drawn in. My mental health is not the best just now, and that song helped me shed a much needed tear or two this week. Weird how music can hit home like that sometimes.

Goatman - Rhythms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xi1qxY41vA
Surprised this hasn't got a mention. People sick of Goat at this stage perhaps? Solo outing from one of that lot anyways. I think I prefer it to anything Goat have put out. It has more brass, afrobeat, and jazzy funkiness.

Douglas Hart - Let's Form A Cell E.P. https://blankeditions.bandcamp.com/albu ... orm-a-cell
Dug this one out from the pile. Love it :D 8) It's amazing that the Mary Chain's ex bass player can produce better music on a whim than the truckload of psych acts that receive tons of press.

Weeed - This: https://weeed.bandcamp.com/
Latest album from Portland's heavy psychers. Four songs in just under 45 minutes. Loads of different influences coming at you but they manage to hold it all together.

The Breeders - All Nerve. The best album they've done since Last Splash. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this is.

Mercury Rev live in Brixton Academy 1992 and Phoenix Festival 1993 8) :D

Thanks to Laz69 whose Dropbox I nabbed these from when he was making some recent Spiritualized bootleg available. Cheers Laz!

Listening to these two recordings reminds me just how amazing the 'Rev were back then. Plenty of genuine goosebump moments across both shows. Brixton is the better recording but Phoenix Festival perhaps slightly more bonkers! Phoenix sounds a little rough for the first two songs then clears up a bit so persevere with it.

Totally agree about David Baker. Only saw them once in London. David Baker was walking around the R A Hall out of his bonce. Not the same without him .
Listening now to Warm Drag a duo from LA.
Probably won't please the traditionalists on here with keyboards and sampler, but it's all about the sound for me.

Mercury Rev definitely lost a lot when David Baker left.
I saw them a few times with him and it was, well, bonkers. But in a such a good way.
I saw the legendary Clapham Grand show when loads of bands came out dressed as stuffed animals including Jason and I think Kate.

I just got my copy of Primal Scream's Give Out But Don't Give Up the Original Memphis recordings.
Jesus. This is good!
I will be listening to this for quite some time I think.
Also the Laughing Hyenas- Life Of Crime & Hard Times/Crawl reissues when I want something a helluva lot heavier.

I can’t disagree with The David Baker stance as I wasn’t there. I got into the Rev just before they released Deserters Songs and was lucky to see them twice on two trips they made over here with Flaming Lips as support. I was hooked and despite diminishing returns on more recent albums, their live shows always impress and they still know how to go loud. I have the Brixton download and it’s staggering, wish I was into them then, that would have been some trip.
That said I witnessed the Rev last week in Manchester doing the 20 years anniversary reworking of Deserters Songs. It was my gig of the year. Spellbinding and for some reason at one point, I was reduced to tears. Powerful and fragile in equal measure and some lovely honest stories from Jonathan throughout.

Just picked this up after hearing John Coxon and Alexis Taylor's Instruments show on Soho radio (which incidentally is well worth checking out). the album itself is great. All instrumental and very Can influenced.

However, what I really want to hear is 'O.D. instrumental' by Primal Scream (untitled and unreleased). Described by Bobby in the sleeve notes of Tago Mago as "an insane Kevin Shields staring at asteroids psycho freak out" - featuring my Jaki Leibzeit on drums with a Mani era Scream. Sounds wild.

The Liminanas: All the albums, in preparation for their debut Irish appearance next week. I'd forgotten how good they are and am genuinely looking forward to the gig :D

Obnox: Boogalou Reed / Louder Space / Murder Radio / Bang Messiah. Lo-fi, distorted, fuzzed-up garage punk with hip-hop moments. Still reminds me of Mark Lanegan at his noisiest.

Taking a break from my hectic life as an influencer ( @myperfectlife across all platforms. This week, lots of exciting news on vegan enemas ) I had a listen to this lot:

Sex Blender - Hormonizer: Dreadful name but decent long instrumental psych jams that aren't afraid to break out the riffs occasionally.

Kikagaku Moyo - Masana Temples: Would have to agree with the praise given to it round these parts. What really stood out was the production; tremendous clarity with a live feel a lot of the time. I did think Laetitia Sadier was on vocals at one point though!

Las Cobras - Temporal: A couple of songs in and I had this down as Moon Duo for hipsters. Or kids. A tad harsh as some other styles come in but really i'd class it as great background music but not something to sit down with. Some of the vocals reminded me of a duet between Sister Vanilla and Courtney Taylor-Taylor. Speaking of which:

The Dandy Warhols - Why You So Crazy: Don't know what to make of this one, it's a bit all over the shop. Some classic Dandy's in there; Small Town Girls and Motor City Steel. A bit of a country vibe on others. I'd put it down as another frustrating Dandy's album :?

The Comet Is Coming - Channel The Spirits: Psych-jazz? Jazz-Psych? It's got Psych, Jazz and electronics anyway! Hoping to catch them live next month, be interesting to see what that's like.

Deerhunter - Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared?: Most immediate album from them in a long time. Maintains the whoozy dreaminess of earlier material but adds strings and a sixties vibe.

Monolord - Empress Rising: A much needed dose of heaviness. Quality Stoner/Doom with gargantuan riffs and non-metal vocals.

Frankie & The Witch Fingers - Brain Telephone LP
Ridiculously catchy psych with poppy undertones. Brilliant songs and full of energy. The song of the same name is one of the best toe-tappers i've heard in a while!
https://youtu.be/o-nPMpTsfh8?t=15

The Left Outsides - All That Remains LP
Wonderfully beautiful folk psychedelia. Gorgeous vocals - i'm a real sucker for seductive vocals! Both members also in the Trimdon Grange Explosion whose album i totally fell in love with towards the end of last year. Reminds me of the Telstar Ponies later material.
https://youtu.be/SA4cvhdOF4c

Kandodo McBain - Lost Chants/Last Chance LP
Never long before this is back on the turntable. Still prefer playing it at 33rpm as the muddy, struggling-to-walk through-molasses sludgey-ness really accentuates the heaviness of the tunes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9aFyRHZsxU

Eternal Tapestry - Invisible Landscape/Alter Of Grass/Wild Strawberries
Saw this band in manchester a number of years ago and they were brilliant. They always seem to drop of my radar as they are not really a band whose name is bounded about a lot like some bands are but, my word, they can really freak out! I found a video of them on YouTube last week that took me right back to that gig in Manchester and reminded me just how good they are.
https://youtu.be/mJnD8AGOi08

Night Beats - Myth Of A Man
Hmmm... new album from Night Beats. One of my favourite bands of recent years and one of the best gigs of the last few years, but i'm not being won over by this new album. Supposedly their "difficult" album. Singer Danny kicked out the bass player and drummer (a pair i considered one of the best rhythm sections currently around) and what we've been left with seems a bit washed out and overly polished. Definitely different to whats came before - less ballsy and punky. Hoping its a grower. Seeing them this weekend so we'll see how it comes across live.

Glad you enjoyed it. I've tried to align them with other bands of similar ilk (Sleepy Sun maybe?) but there is so much energy and "fun" about them that they do seem to hold their own wee space! Always loved their S/T debut but they have proved their staying power.

This Saturday's "Maintaining My Sanity" Session went thus:

Bodega - Endless Scroll: Only discovered this lot last week and serendipitously they are playing here next week! Best described as Parquet Courts younger siblings.

The Comet Is Coming - Death To The Planet E.P: Maintaining the Cosmic-jazz vibe, yet deciding to up the beats on this one and making a good case for putting on ones dancing shoes.

Bobbie Gentry / Mercury Rev - The Delta Sweete: First time listening to the former's version in decades. Prompted by the latter's version. The original is a nice mix of country-soul and ballads. Definite Spiritualized feel in places. The new one i'll post my thoughts in the Rev thread.

Boy Azooga - 1,2, Kung Fu!: A name i've seen in the past year, thought i'd give it a go. Some of the songs wouldn't be out of place on an SFA/Gruff Rhys album but they're not as appealing. Well, not to my ears anyway. I suspect those here with more of a pop sensiblity than me might get more out of this album.

Monolord - Vaenir: Cleaner than 'Empress Rising' but with more wah-wah and psych leanings towards the end. Still heavy riffs tho!

Antibalas - Where The Gods Are In Peace: Excellent Afrobeat from New York outfit, who i'm happy to see will be playing here over Easter weekend as part of their 20th Anniversary tour.

Henge - Henge: Bought this when it was released three years ago and only listening to it now  If this was on Rocket they could've been where Pigs x7 are. Really not much to differentiate between the two. Vocals are rawer here and not swathed in echo. Looking forward to new album next month. Beware, there are a number of bands called Henge. This lot are on God Unknown.

Dead Can Dance - Dionysus: Solid album of two suites split into four parts each. Minor quibble , i would've liked to have heard more of Lisa Gerrard on vocals.

GOGGS - GOGGS: Lo-fi, dirty, snotty garage punk from Ty Segall and friends. Quick and to the point. The guy can knock this stuff out in his sleep but it's still worth a listen. I particularly like the analogue synth wigout that is 'Final Notice'.

some nice jangly guitar, dreamy harmonies and a good melody. wouldn't mind something with a bit more edge, and I kinda wish they had changed producer. but I am sure the album will be nice and varied (just like Weather Diaries) so this will likely make more sense as part of a whole.

The new Wand album Laughing Matter, the super heavy/garage psyche of yore is almost gone - not entirely mind - and they`re in a different kinda of psyche boat, its still pretty out there though, double album well over an hour an so much inventive shit going on, going to enjoy this album for a while I feel.
