reformed bands

Post by bunnyben »

i'm not saying these bands have run out of ideas. i mean the album titles alone shows how fertile the minds still are

portishead- third
verve- forth

*whistles innocently*
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

+1. You spend ten years crafting a gorgeous mind-bender of an album and you call it Third? At least The Verve didn't call theirs "Fourth."

Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II
Led Zeppelin III
(Untitled)

Yet these 4 of the greatest records ever made.

Peter Gabriel's first 4 albums were all called Peter Gabriel.

Sorry - I also lost the plot about reformed bands, I just went for unassuming titles (but I can whistle with my fingers very loudly - does that count?).

Mission Of Burma's ONoffON was a good, descriptive title.

Maybe it's a stand by the bands against the fact that everyone thinks you should have a cool title for your album?

Goodbye Cream - nice descriptive title

"And then there were three.." Genesis first album as a trio after both lead vocalist and lead guitarist left.. drummer became the singer and bass player became guitarist.. when they also lost 95% of all musical ideas (the good ones) they of course started selling millions. Horrible album

I don't think so. The most recent album that they put out wasn't really that great. I'm getting sick of reformed bands, simply because most of them ruin their legacy. For example, i'm a huge Zep fan and I have absolutely no desire to hear any new stuff. The reunion show from 1988 is absolutely dreadful (the solo being absolute horrid). All that starts to do is diminish the way that I saw their past.

see the post above my Big Star post. It was a joke.
seriously though, I can seperate Big Star 3rd/Sister Lovers era from the recent stuff(which I haven't heard).

I have always been pretty good about jumping ship when bands I like start to bore me.

+1. Third is brilliant. Personally, I think it's one of the most creative records I've heard in years.

What am I missing with this album? I don't think it's bad in anyway and I really enjoyed seeing them live recently, but the album is such a sleeper and seems to me to lack the creativity and energy the band once had.
Exactly! I just don't hear it. Those first two records and some of their re-mixed stuff was just fucking deadly (Check out some of the Re-Birth of Cool stuff, it's pretty fucking sweet.) With Third I am just not picking up whatever it is that's there...

I feel the opposite about Portishead. Most of the stuff aside from Third bores me after four or five tracks. Every song on this album throws something unexpected, unique and strange at you. The drum sounds alone are worth the price of the album. All of the synth tones are exceptional. I guess I don't see what's not to like.

Have been on a Zeppelin binge as of late and my votes goes for Led Zep ll. What a monster of a record.
That is of course if I had a vote for LZ's greatest record.
