The Heads - ultra limited live CD

Post by runcible »

There’s very good news for Heads fans. A CD of their Tilburg 013 performance from the summer Wooden Shjips tour is coming out any day – probably only 100 available through their web site. It comes in a full colour gatefold card sleeve with Hugo’s tour diary printed on the inner sleeve. I am both proud and ashamed to have been part of the documented ‘big bifta stand-off’ that took place outside the venue after the show. The CD is absolutely awesome – having witnessed the gig I can say it was one of the best sets I’ve ever seen them do. The searing intensity of the onslaught is never-ending, from the monstrous jam of ‘Bedlam’ at the start to the pummelling ordeal of ‘Spliff Riff’ at the end, it buzzes like a swarm of angry wasps throughout. If it comes out before Christmas it zooms to the top of the ‘album of the year’ chart with ease. The Heads crush all before them!

Big thumbs up to our own sonic124 for providing some of the tapes used to make this glorious noisefest.

Where is it?

I've looked on their site but there's no mention of the CD.

After listening to the stuff you did for me I feel compeled to make a purchase.
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

It's not out yet but it exists as I have one, but then a few lucky dedicated Heads nutters got advance copies. I just want people to know as previous releases on their legendary Rooster label sell out almost immediately.

As soon as I hear of them being there I'll let everyone know. I just couldn't restrain myself from announcing the release as I've been wallowing in the sonic glory all weekend. I was impressed that my 10 year old daughter was quite happy for me to have it blaring while she pottered about in the kitchen too.

Not sure about that runcible but i enjoyed their set at the Cargo earlier in the year and if the Live album is similar to that, then i'm in for a copy.

Jig - go to the merch page and refresh it. For some reason it hadn't appeared when I looked at it but when I refreshed there it was!

It's basically the same set you saw at Cargo more or less.

Mine was waiting on the doormat when I got home yesterday.

I had to wait till this morning to listen to it (on my iPod - which probably isn't the best place for it) and it was bloody brilliant. I can't wait to get home to listen to it through speakers.

Best non-spz £15 I've spent all year

Mine arrived at the weekend although I've been playing a preview copy for a few weeks. Talk about kicking arse, this is mind-bending in its intensity! Lovely package too.

It's worth remembering that the band themselves do all the merch stuff and drummer Wayne is sending these out himself. He is normally very efficient but there's been a lot of interest in this CD so I imagine he's wading through lots of orders as well as working long hours. The Crimbo post might not help the speed of arrival either but this is well worth waiting for. I can't wait for The Heads to play live again!

One thing I've noticed is the track list on the back of the CD packaging is different to the one that iTunes coughs up - which one is the right one. I don't know enough of their stuff to work it out.

Depending on what Santa brings I might have to invest in some more.

Loved the tour diary excerpts.

Oh and mine is number 36. 8)

Hmmm - I haven't noticed that. I think the track listing on the back is correct, but 'Creating In The Eternal Now Is Always Heavy' is also know is Hairy Chapter. Did that title appear?

The tour diary is great. Glad to see our own 'Leeds Boys' get a mention. It was a crazy few days alright...

Hairy Chapter is on the iTunes list as track 6 - so that would fit with the CD track being 'Creating In The Eternal Now Is Always Heavy'.

Other tracks according to iTunes are:
Handlar Med Jonesie
Cardinal Fuzz
Could Be...
Long Gone
Widowmaker
Hairy Chapter
Spliff Riff

Track 1 is also sometimes called 'Bedlam Jam' - there is an excellent version (called 'Handlar Med Jonesie') on the split 7" sold on the Wooden Shjips tour (both tracks are awesome on that). I am wondering if it was actually me who submitted that track list to iTunes when I got my preview copy of this CD!

It's cool Warmth - my record player is in...er, 'suspended animation' at present so i'm having to make do with cds, tapes, mp3s, wax cylinders and the like.

Late last saturday I pulled out a bunch of vinyl and realized I couldn't play them  - still, they are great items to look at - especially any Funkadelic!

So, Dead In The Water is good then? A total impulse purchase, but, c'mon, it's THE HEADS!!!!

Dead In The Water is a collection of jams from their rehearsal room. They always kick things off with an improvised jam and they've stuck a whole load on this album. Rather bizarrely it is interspersed with some very out of tune piano, occasional background noise and samples of Elvis talking (he's a big hero of Simon Price's). Some tracks are 7-8 minutes, others 30 seconds. Some incredible moments though - Mystic Healer towards the beginning is particularly ferocious.

Is the sound quality of the new Heads live LP good?

I've bought a few (possibly semi-official) live LPs before and the sound has been crap.

Sounds great to me. Premium quality sound.

What live stuff do you have? The stuff I have is generally great, just a few traded audience CDs that are slightly patchy.

Sorry Runcible, I didn't mean I had live Heads stuff - just other bands live LPs that were glorified bootleg quality.

I should just take the plunge and order the LP later. I ordered 'Dead In The Water' on Amazon a couple of days ago. Never got around to buying before.

i may be going out on a limb here but I find the English countryisde the most beautiful place on earth. At least the part of Earth i've seen. If thats what you meant anyway. A#4 could be a band. Ride was a band. Not sure about the atmosphere,

Ah but you have been spoilt by spending a lot of time in Yorkshire! Actually I remember you seeing the dales on some trip up to the Angel at Hetton restaurant - that's certainly pretty spectacular countryside around there.

A4 = Asteroid No. 4. The atmosphere as generated by hosts and guests (young and less young) and it was pretty good I have to say. Hoping for a repeat experience in the spring.

The Angel may have been my first trip to Yorkshire. I do remember. Even the train journey from Manchester(I know I know) to Leeds has many spectacular moments. Or walking around the grounds. Those views just past the front lawn.

Finally arrived (#200)! After one copy going missing in the post the band very kindly sent out another copy to me last week which arrived yesterday. So instead of receiving it as a Xmas present it transformed into a Birthday gift instead. :D Great album, Spliff Riff being my fave tune. I see that they've got a split 12" with White Hills coming out soon too! All i need now is an Irish gig to top everything off.
