1.0 out of 5 stars Ladies & Gentlemen We Are A Waste Of Space, 4 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (Audio CD)
I purchased this album merely because it had ranked highly in a poll of 'Most Depressing Albums Of All Time' and because the album title sounded good and inventive. Oh how wrong I was... Upon listening to the CD itself, I immediately regretted it. The album as a whole is overblown, overstretched (the 'humorous' prescription-style packaging, complete with foil-wrapped CD, states 'one tablet: 70 mins') and messy. From sprawling opener, the title track onwards, the impression of a meaningless opus is given. The few lyrics (those that are actually intelligible) are meaningless and take second place to the 'avant garde' style of 'J. Spaceman' and his creative mates. 'Broken Heart' and 'Cool Waves' provide some relief from the indulgent sounds of the album's 10 other tracks but this relief soon fades to leave yet more boring pompish-experimentalism. The information leaflet accompanying the CD states that the music should 'treat the heart and the soul' by playing 'once twice daily' but do this and you won't feel any better - you'll feel cheated and in need of a short sharp musical shock of some sort. King Adora anybody?"
...my word, i don't really need to say anything. the firslt line says it all for me...
'raging and weeping are left on the early road
now each in his holy hill
the glittering and hurting days are alomst done
then let us compare mythologies
i have learned my elaborate lie
of soaring crosses and poisened thorns'

Jesus - I'm going to have to give it another listen... He's raised some strong points.

You know, that's probably the only negative review that i've ever read about the album! Obviously not everyone likes something, but i've never seen it in a used record store, and I don't ever remember reading any bad words about it. Different strokes for different folks, though.....

that's because not many people have this excellent system for buying music

Even though i now finally accept it may not be to everyones taste, i still cant help the reflex disgust i feel when someone puts that album down. Philistine, cretin, moron, idiot are all words i still have to supress from coming out of my mouth.
