Favourite album closing tracks.

Post by Shaun »

Quite recently I've been playing Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (well skipping to the last two tracks) The Lyre of Orpheus and I think I've become addicted to the closing track O Children. A truly fantastic song to finish of with. Another one I got addicted to but without actually having the album was/is Alloway Grove off These Streets by Paolo Nutini.

Point of the thread is simple, what songs do you think close's an album best ?

I'd say Echoes off Meddle by Pink Floyd but sometimes listening to it can feel like an endurance test, other times quite a ride.

Sau Paulo - Guillemots from "Through The WindowPane"...a manic celebration of a song with an even better rythymn ending than that of Doves "Catch The Sun' (live).
Coney Island Baby - Lou Reed from"Coney Island Baby"...the getting back on his feet album; this reflective track gently cleanses the past away...and paves the way
Oh Sweet Nuthin' - Velvet Underground from"Loaded"...is this a song about heroin, a song about foresaking earthly possesions or just a comment on what the writer sees about him...still a great "two fingers" ending to an album that was borne out of the label' requirement for hit singles.

Shaun has already mentioned "Alloway Grove"...

Best,

Stuart

Also, to whomever (apologies, can't track back while editing this post) earlier in the thread gave the track on BRMC's second album, Salvation at the end of the first album is an absolute belter :D

Cool. What about the sublime 'Over Now' that closes out their greatest (for me) 'Alice In Chains'? Beautiful yet ragged.

And Talkin' Last Track on Dylan Album Blues - what about 'Highlands'? Only heard that first a few months back. Got to love those circular bluesy notes that play through the whole song. Again beautiful, yet ragged.
good dope/good fun wrote:Tool - Ænima - Third Eye
Yeah - good choice! I love the slow intro from '~ions'. Although it maybe...to me anyway...does not sound as overwhelming as it once did. No worries.

I think I would have to go for 'Cop shoot cop...' - it's sort of beyond any other last song thing out there. Way out there!

'Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip'?

Also 'Sometimes I Feel So Lonely'. 'Gold Dust Woman'. 'Lay It Down Slow'...

Dylan does like to end his albums with a nice epic. Desolation Row is amazing.

However of the recent albums I'd say Sugar Baby is the one for me (even though i prefer Time Out Of Mind as a whole, def in my top 5 Dylan albums). Highlands outstays its welcome.

props to who suggested The Mars Volta- put that album on the first time in ages and bloody loved it. it still rocks like a mother. bonkers too.

I'll try and bring some new ones to the table...

Big Star- Take Care
Springsteen- Jungleland
Elbow- Scattered Black and Whites
Hendrix- Voodoo Chile (slight return)
Explosion in the sky- Your Hand In Mine (beautiful..)
Sigur Ros- untitled 8 (EPIC!!)

It is indeed. Interestingly I saw them play it with Johnny Marr on guitar in Melbourne in 1989 and it didn't make the impact it does on record. That was the Mind Bomb tour. Some of the lyrics on that album are interesting to look back on in terms of what MJ felt was about to happen - I don't think anyone had openly expressed a lot of those views back then.

Julian Cope - Las Vegas Basement off Peggy Suicide
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Feeling Lucky from Stoned & Dethroned
The Jesus & Mary Chain - I Hate Rock n Roll, Munki

Also would second Oh Sweet Nuthin', great closer that. I'm sure there's more but i can't be arsed thinking about it much. :|

The lyrics on Mind Bomb? I used to listen to that album a lot and thought then that those lryics were great, but also, what is this guy going on about, what's his 'angle' ? I know now. I'm not sure he was out there on his own in terms of his views on all things East and West, perhaps a lot slipped passed my radar.

Some good choices on here, definitely go for 'Shoot Speed/Kill Light' and 'Giant'. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I've always liked 'Lived in Splendour: Died in Chaos' - Pop Will Eat Itself - Cure for Sanity but the best has to be 'Hymn for the BIg Wheel' - Massive Attack - Blue Lines, although 'Get Out of My Kingdom' - Two Lone Swordsmen - Wrong Meeting is close.

And I heard 'Your Party' Ween - La Cucaracha while driving on holiday last year and it left me speechless.

However...
Low - Shots & Ladders (Trust)
and
Pink Floyd - Echoes (Meddle)

I'm agreeing with Shaun on this one 'O Children' is one of the best closing tracks in a very long time and Cop Shoot Cop wins it for Spiritualized, some other personal faves have to be:

I Lived My Life To Stand In The Shadow Of Your Heart from Exploding Head by A Place To Bury Strangers
Silent Movie - Union - The Boxer Rebellion
Murder Song - See This Through & Leave - The Cooper Temple Clause
A Sea Within A Sea - Primary Colours - The Horrors
Gypsy, Death & You - Keep On Your Mean Side - The Kills
European Son - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Now Here Is Nowhere - Secret Machines
Voodoo Dolly - Juju - Siouxsie & The Banshees
The Diamond Sea - Washing Machine - Sonic Youth
Open Day At The Hate Fest - Curve

and the weirdest goes to either
Zebra - 69 Love Songs - The Magnetic Fields
or
The Sunday Song - One Last Laugh In A Place Of Dying - The God Machine
and through wax seals and padlocks...a hand through my ribcage...past the choking I saw palms and fingers grasping shoulders...collarbone...crushing...I imagined myself hacking desperately at a sea of appendages...freeing myself like a butcher...
