First record or cd

Post by eelnekwah »

After reading all the previous threads on here about best records, best opening tracks ,song of the day etc etc I thought it would be fun to know what record or cd you went out and bought with your own free will and money back when you were all younger.
The downside - we could all reveal our ages  Heres mine

Jilted John - Jilted John (EMI 7") Still play this this occasionally

The first album I bought was Big Willie Style by Will Smith in 97 (I think), which would have made me 10 or11.

A classic.

First single was definitely Swamp Thing by The Grid (on cassette, no less!).

First album was probably Morning Glory. I was 13.

The downside - we could all reveal our ages
I had 10-15 tapes with full records before I owned a physical one, but I think my first "real" albums were with the beatles, beatles 1962–1966 and Survival by Marley&the wailers.
I remember the deaths of both bobby and johnny.. the 6 months between their deaths was when I started realising that music was my main interest so I was considerably more sad about marley than lennon.

I only bought perhaps 10 of my first 50 records with my own money, some of the records I bought 81-83 are seriously embarrassing: Can´t slow down by Lionel Horseface, Jump up by Disneyfaggot John and Glass houses by D.U.I Joel.

Goodbye yellow brick road was probably the very first record I paid for in a shop with my own money.. although I believe that some time earlier I chose Double fantasy in a shop and dad paid for it..never bought singles until Bowie´s absolute beginners.

i get a bunch of good loopholes on this one-
first record (i never bought an lp until i was 18)- the glove- 'blue sunshine'
first cd- not real sure what it was because i didn't even have a cd player until i was 11 or 12- it's actually possible that it was nirvana- 'nevermind.' i was pissed because it didn't have the hidden track and everyone else i knew had it.
now the first album i ever actually bought was a cassette of bon jovi- 'new jersey.' it was 1987 and my parents screened all of the music i listened to. i wanted to buy 'appetite for destruction' because i'd heard it, but i knew it would be confiscated, so i went with bon jovi instead. i had to make cassette copies of all of my friends' cds until i was in high school- my parents even took away my green jello cd. that's what it's like when your mom is from rural kansas.

my problem was sort of the opposite.. when parents say they like what you buy at 13 then those records kind of lose some of their value.. at 14 or 15 I finally succeded with ministry´s the land of rape and honey. They hated it. :D

you do have to consider that i'm coming from another planet. i mean back in the soviet union days if some relative or friend got an LP lets say from Finland or whatever, there was only one way and that was making dubs on a tape recorder with those huge tapes. can't remember what they are called or maybes it's just my english... and that -lish has much to get improved. i have told it before, i did learn english in school. for the sake of east-germany i learned german. scheisse.
anyway.... my "knowledge" and my "taste" was making some shape (it's hard to struggle through the jazz influenced variety, polish freaked out jazz, or russian bossanova and occasional pink floyd) and i hit the jackpot for - the first CD purchase was Spacemen 3 "taking drugs to make music to take drugs to". all friends were shocked about the disc and i mean more about the title. but that really did not trigger me, the title clicked and only later i found more info about other releases. maybe if the info was sooner available for me, maybe i had choosen another one. but that disc still bites me.... if this has not been weird enough, then it was the Bomb release. really... could have been some totally other things. but thats the way it goes and the gates are open since then.

Seeing as it was many, many years ago now (1980ish I reckon), I can't quite remember if Kings of The Wild Frontier by Adam & The Ants or Loonee Tunes by Bad Manners were my first musical purchase. I remember owning both of these on tape though. I believe my first vinyl purchase was the 7" single Feed The World by Band Aid. Obviously I'm not quite as cool as Veiko, but then who is?

First record was "Magical Mystery Tour". It had that great booklet inside (which I was dleighted to find reproduced in the recent Beatles re-issues), but it would take me over 25 years to finally see the movie! As a kid, I thought it had to be fantastic, but when seeing it as an adult I was let down. Ah well, good memories.

First cd purchased was The Jam "Setting Sons". I can't recall why it took me so long to get a cd player, I think that was 1987. It was one of the first portable ones, and had a monstrous battery compartment. I still have that cd. My second cd was "Psychocandy" which had the bonus title track (well, bonus as compared to the US vinyl release). I still recall searching around the house for loose change to have nough money ot buy that, I think it was well over $20, being a UK import. After that I have no clue, the collection grows on a daily basis.

and to add just a bit more, I saw Devo when I was 12, and that changed my life forever.
