The Spiritualized forum - 120 greatest albums of all time

Post by Stuart X.Hunter »

Hi,

been pondering this for a while; moreso my own 50 favourite albums but thought it might be interesting to extend it to include everyones.
I'm happy to keep a log (excel spreadsheet) that i'll update periodically.

Rules:

I was thinking one album per group/artist/person and that these had to be studio albums (so no live, collections of singles, demo's etc).

Comments and is anyone interested?

Best,

Stuart

I think this is a great idea, was thinking someone may do this thread soon seeing as we've had all the other usual suspects (best opener, best closer, etc) recently.

only thing is this board isn't the busiest in the world so i hope some lurkers come out of the woodwork to get the numbers up.

will it literally be how many votes each album gets, or some sort of points system? albums higher up in a persons list should get more points i think. means some wildcards might sneak in.

i reckon best thing would be to have them in blocks of ten- so every album in your 'top 10' gets 5 points, next ten each get 4 points, etc.

that way there is some sort of ranking but you don't have to think too ridiculously about precise order.

I was thinking that these should not be any ranking whatsoever as...well how can you really compare them.

Just your 50 faves in any order (alphabetical would be best)

I was just thinking "one point" for everytime an album is mentioned. The thought of assigning different scoring mechanisms would be pretty hard for me to keep track of.

I'm about 25 or so in with mine...

This would work well I reckon

what about collections of ep:s that are more famous as part of an album than their original releases?

examples:
"magical mystery tour" is a singles collection+soundtrack (UK version a collection of singles+double-EP)
The beatless never wanted to release it as an album.

"your funeral.. my trial" was originally a double-EP but everyone considers it a NickCave album.

just to clarify... how do you want this list? alphabetical order, or blocks of ten , favourites first?

the rules are making me realise how my tastes are clustered around a relatively small group of artists.. if there wasn't the one album per artist rule my list would be really boring... this is forcing me to think, its fun.

Does 'Kick Out The Jams' count as a live album?

Hmm, I think we just list our top 50 albums then, remove the one per artist rule and if people recognise a collection of singles or ep's as albums well lets have it...

We're bound to get a lot of one-voters so perhaps it would make sense to shorten the top 50 to a top 25 or something but still submit a top 50 to get us there.

Any order is good for me 'flarez

Bets,

Fuck me this is proving tough. Not sure on the one album per artist rule or not though. Its quite hard picking 50 albums by 50 different artisits but I think you'll probably end up with a more varied eclectic mix of stuff. Can't get over the fact how much old school indie I'm going for, but I guess those albums were the first ones that I listened to when I started to get seriously into music.

I think 2 per band is a more reaslitic limit. Picking 50 by different acts might end up with albums being included just to make up numbers. I can easily think of 50 amazing albums by different artists, but they wouldn't be my favourites.

Actually, thats not a bad comprimise. I must admit, for me, picking just one Neil Young album is proving a tad tricky.

Agree with that ,been thinkin on this and felt that one album per artist would have me leaving out albums that were better than some off the stuff I was putting in.

SPOILER: This is NOT my definitive Greatest/Top 50 albums of all time list but more of a work in progress approach to it. I couldn't nail down 50 albums to a top 50 list. I just couldn't and I don't think I'd want to. But for the following list if someone were to say to me "here's the next 50 albums you are going to listen to", then I'd be extremely happy to do so. And they are more or less towards the front of the collection.

Here goes (in alphabetical order I hope)...

AC/DC ~ Back In Black.
Blondie ~ Parallel Lines.
Bob Marley & The Wailers ~ Exodus.
Dennis Wilson ~ Pacific Ocean Blue.
Fleetwood Mac ~ Rumours.
Funkadelic ~ Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow.
Gene Clark ~ No Other.
Global Communication ~ 76:14.
Guns N' Roses ~ Appetite For Destruction.
Howe Gelb ~ 'Sno Angel Like You.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart ~ Rising Above Bedlam.
Jim Dickinson ~ Dixie Fried.
Jimi Hendrix ~ Electric Ladyland.
KLF ~ Chill Out.
Led Zeppelin ~ Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin ~ Led Zeppelin IV.
Leftfield ~ Leftism.
Love ~ Forever Changes.
Marvin Gaye ~ What's Going On.
Massive Attack ~ Blue Lines.
Massive Attack ~ Mezzanine.
Max Richter ~ The Blue Notebooks.
Michael Jackson ~ Thiller.
Nina Simone ~ And Piano.
Nirvana ~ Nevermind.
One Giant Leap ~ S/T.
Paul Weller ~ Heavy Soul.
Pink Floyd ~ Dark Side Of The Moon.
Pink Floyd ~ Wish You Were Here.
Portishead ~ Dummy.
Public Image Ltd ~ Metal Box.
Radiohead ~ OK Computer.
Radiohead ~ The Bends.
Sly & The Family Stone ~ Stand!
Spacemen 3 ~ Perfect Prescription.
Spectrum Meets Captain Memphis ~ Indian Giver.
Spiritualized ~ Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space.
Talk Talk ~ Spirit Of Eden.
The Beatles ~ Abbey Road.
The Beatles ~ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The Heads ~ Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere.
The Rolling Stones ~ Let It Bleed.
The Rolling Stones ~ Sticky Fingers.
The The ~ Infected.
The The ~ Mind Bomb.
The The ~ Soul Mining.
Tricky ~ Pre-Millennium Tension.
U2 ~ Achtung Baby.
U2 ~ Joshua Tree.
U2 ~ Rattle And Hum.

Mostly all the usual suspects but as I said, I'd be happy if they were the next 50 albums I listened to.

I won't be changing that list Stuart, so it's ok to go if you are keeping records or a points style system. Talking of which; I'm sure Led Zep 1, Perfect Prescription and Sticky Fingers will figure prominently if you are going to do that.

Nothing will ever surpass Exile on my list. Beggars is certainly the second most listened Stones record for me(Goats Head Soup coming in third). Have you ever heard those alternate Beggars bootlegs RSVP or Beggars Breakfast. They are incredible.
I think after #10 none of it is really in any order. It was done off the top of my head.
The older we get, the more music we hear, the harder these lists become.
Good thing I had Big Star in there eh?

I recognize that this is a thread of people's opinions, but i absolutely 100% disagree with this choice. Abattoir Blues and The Lyre of Orpheus are a perfect example of a double album needing to be edited down into a single album. The last four tracks of Abattoir (Nature Boy can stay if you feel the album needs a "single") can go and the first four tracks of Lyre can go and then you have a 100% solid Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album. Fucking b-sides passed off as album tracks, for shame!
Well, each to their own and all. I'm very fond of all the tracks on The Lyre Of Orpheus (in contrast with Abbatoir Blues, which I rarely listen to), and it's the NC&BS album I find myself spinning the most. If the list was a little less restrictive about how multiple albums by the same artist, it probably wouldn't have made the top 50 (like many others I've included).

As far as Be Here Now goes, I only remember reading positive reviews in the press at the time, like everyone was competing to see how much praise they could lavish on it. I recall the backlash taking a while to kick in.

Blimey, I think I whittled it down to these 2 Young albums for my list too. Though if we're not sticking to the "only 2 albums by a single artist" rule I think I'd have to include On the Beach and maybe Ragged Glory too.

I've changed this list so many times and I'm still not 100% happy with it, but I'd be pretty happy with these 50 albums if I was left on a desert island (obviously along with the means to play them!). Quick question? How about classical music? Kinda difficult. A couple of symphonies mean so
much to me.

i agree. i imitated a precedent and removed music of Guillaume Dufay from my list.
but i can't give it order/number. there is it at the halfpace left edge of the CD rack in my heart.(and the right side end is Spacemen3.)

All,

Can these please come in as follows;

Artist/Album

and in alphabetical order.

It's proving an eyesore trying to transfer to a speadsheet and doing the above will be most helpful.

Those that have submitted already, thank you and no need to re-submit...but from now on...PLEASE submit in format requested.

The spreadsheet will be as follows;

albums/artists on the left, individual users votes to the right of that and totals to the right again. It may prove a useful tool when complete to print and stick in your pocket for little music buying days.

Usual suspects are ahead at present but look out for Eno as a dark horse.

We may need to have a vote-off at the end to complete a top 50 fairly and I was thinking the plug should be pulled on this thread by Friday 13th November...by which time il,be needing laser corrective surgery.

Best,

Stuart

Stuart, apologies for forgetting the alphabetical thing, didnt have a great deal of time to do the list, but its as near as I can get to my faves, well i thought so at the time! Reading other peoples lists reminds me of my ommisions though! Stupidly I left out the Stooges and De la Soul! (among others) also lots of old blues, soul, dub, hip hop and many more, ah well, maybe in a couple of years they'll be a top 100 and i'll get it right!

I think the rules have fallen by the wayside.

I struggled with the 1 album per artist rule and eventually had to duplicate but i kept live albums and ep's/best-ofs/etc off.

48. Jackson C Frank - Blues Run The Game
49. Arcade Fire - Funeral
50. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible

Sorry it's not alphabetical, it would take ages on this little reply box to scroll around and try to order them now I thought them up. Some obvious choices and some you might find quite strange. The Holy Bible just came to me at the end, can't quite decide on the manics. They might be shit but I like that. Anyway...

Still working on this. I find it hard to commit myself to a published list. I think somebody hit the nail on the head when they said "the older I get the harder these lists become".

Also, to whoever asked: "Does 'Kick out the Jams' count as a live record"? I would say, most definitely YES! It may have been their first LP but it was still a live, raw album.

Regarding Kick Out The Jams, I think that although it is a live album, it is much different than any other live album. Namely, it was their first full-length release, and has become known properly as "their first album." Also, nothing on that record appeared in a studio version until much later (that is if you can count Thunder Express as a studio album...."live in the studio"). I would argue that it should be included in this list because it represents how the MC5 wanted their songs to be presented and the only way to get their anti-refinement ideas across was to record it live and in the raw.

PS: I'm still working on my top 50 and Kick Out the Jams one of the albums I have so far. haha.

That's debatable...was it how THEY wanted their songs to be presented or was it how John Sinclair wanted their songs to be presented?

Personally, my favorite MC5 LP is 'High Time'. It's the perfect marriage of 'KOTJ's' raw edge and the kick ass rock and roll of 'Back in the USA' rolled into one perfect MC5 power punch.

Ah,

I see a problem here

Can all those who have voted for Leonard Cohen with "Songs Of" send me a pm to define of it's Songs Of Leonard Cohen or Songs Of Love & Hate...wouldn't want anything left up to my interpretation.

Best,

Stuart

well, i did make an executive decision on Kick Out The Jams and included it in my list in the end, because i think it stands alone as a distinctive album and none of the songs appear elsewhere.

Interesting as we've had 15 voters (that i've input so far)...so who are the voters that didn't use there two album per artist allowance on Spiritualized!!! You should be ashamed.
Neil Young' best album seems to be splitting opinion; along with Radiohead, The Stones, The Beatles & The Zep.

Best,

Stuart

Yip, unfortuantely they are languishing somewhat...as are The Pastels!

One glaring omission I've made is Future Pilot A.K.A - "tiny waves, mighty sea", doh! Nevermind

Bit of a let-down for us Scots with just the Mary Chain and Mogwai in the Top 50 (currently) artists voted on.
The Fannies, Telstar Ponies & The Blue Nile (get in niamhm!) are just behind.

Best,

Stuart

The Scream as well (if they count as Scottish).
The two Jack Bruce votes from me+ two votes on Cream´s "Disraeli gears" record (mostly written by jack) kind of give that crazy Scotsman four votes (although three of them are from me....)

cmon people.. the patriarch of electric lead bass!

the only reason I didn´t vote for jamc darklands is that my current copy is so scratched I cant listen to it and I always forget to buy a new (3rd) copy.
