Pretty recently, someone made a brilliant compilation named The Spacemen 3 110. It's 110 songs arranged in order by track length (ascending). It has maybe all of the songs that Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, and Spectrum have either covered, "tributed", or were greatly influenced by - as well as some really cool radio promo spots from their influences. The above four are on it, as well as:

"We Sell Soul" - The Spades (13FE)
"Please Stay" - The Cryin' Shames
"Just One Time" - Juicy Lucy
"O Happy Day" - The Edwin Hawkins Singers
"Why Don't You Smile Now?" - The Zodiacs + others
"Walking and Falling" - Laurie Anderson (You can hear so many of the ambient songs by spz, sp3, and spectrum in this)
"Fixin to Die" - Bob Dylan (via Bukka White)
"Transparent Radiation" - The Red Crayola
Multiple versions of "AWTYWM" - the Evie Sands one is the most interesting.

Some seriously good shit in there. I can do an upload of this stuff and maybe some of the others too if peeps are interested? I can see already they are. They'll be hefty rar/zip files though, so give me a little time to sort it out.

No influences? That would be tough. But I'll say that Oneida are unlike any band I have ever heard anywhere. Their music is, as I have said elsewhere, hard to classify. It's psychedelic for sure but they are in a territory all of their own in my opinion.

That has never been possible -
It would be like saying that somewhere there is a human who is totally original and doesn´t share any genetic traits with any other mammal. It would not be a human or a mammal or even anything alive in the known universe.

People are influenced in the womb. It´s in the way humans and many animals function..

I agree the whole "everythings been done before in music" is just rubbish, and is exactly a lack of imagination and/or the application thereof.

Beware of any musician who utters these dreaded words. Chances are they have become jaded, uninspired and probably not very good. Oddly enough Kurt Cobain talked of such matters in one of his last interviews...

Anyway, this idea reminds me of the hoary old rock-critic opinion that recorded music hit a peak in a certain year and has been downhill ever since. Again, this idea is borne from similar experiences as above I think.


There's plenty of music out there that sounds very unlike most other things( an noted above very difficult to define original etc) Calibrate your ears...just takes a bit of digging I think.

The Spank Rock (XXXXXX) record from a few years ago for me sounds like nothing else around. It's wonderful.

That new Jonelle Monáe album (The Archandroid) I was raving on about in another thread is spectacular as well. While it draws together many differnt influences and styles and genres it sounds really fresh and in no way contrived. It's amazing and for me I think is the album of the year. Years...

What I was trying to say in my first post is that the best bands take their influences and put a fresh spin on them to create a sound that's all their own. I admittedly didn't state this clearly but you'll get no argument from me that great music is still being released. Even a band who you think sounds utterly unlike anything you've heard before has been influenced by tons of musicians and their music reflects those influences.
