Laurie Anderson - Born Never Asked
aka Spiritualized - Born Never Asked
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVlD_gibwYU

J J Cale - The Breeze
aka Spiritualized - Run
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21PHsqnG-qI

MC5 - Black To Comm
aka Spacemen 3 - Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMITpOaKQHc

Evie Sands isn't credited but Sonic did put her song on his Spacelines compilation from a few years ago.

Pretty recently, someone made a brilliant compilation named The Spacemen 3 110. It's 110 songs arranged in order by track length (ascending). It has maybe all of the songs that Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, and Spectrum have either covered, "tributed", or were greatly influenced by - as well as some really cool radio promo spots from their influences. The above four are on it, as well as:

"We Sell Soul" - The Spades (13FE)
"Please Stay" - The Cryin' Shames
"Just One Time" - Juicy Lucy
"O Happy Day" - The Edwin Hawkins Singers
"Why Don't You Smile Now?" - The Zodiacs + others
"Walking and Falling" - Laurie Anderson (You can hear so many of the ambient songs by spz, sp3, and spectrum in this)
"Fixin to Die" - Bob Dylan (via Bukka White)
"Transparent Radiation" - The Red Crayola
Multiple versions of "AWTYWM" - the Evie Sands one is the most interesting.
"Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten" - Arvo Part (easy to hear the influence it had on Broken Heart/LICD/Flux Fest)

Ollie- Highly recommended you check these out if you want to look more into the borrowed stuff

re: the wonderful Evie Sands song.

The sleeve notes (that for some weird reason weren't actually included in the cd) for Sonics Spacelines comp can be found here. I should think many people on here already have the record but if you haven't then go and buy it. Such a good compilation.

http://www.munster-records.com/archivos ... es_ing.htm

For easy use here's what he says about the Evie Sands song and the use of it in How You Satisfy Me

I Can't Let Go - Evie Sands
This superb song was written by Chip Taylor of Wild Thing and Anyway That You Want Me fame.I believe Evie mighta done his demos... This song is so much better than the Hollies’ insipid hit it's almost a differant track.I used part of the middle 8 of the song to create How You Satisfy Me for SPECTRUM , but here you get the real deal in all its glory.

I've got this compilation and a couple of others through someone on LastFM. :)
Some seriously good shit in there. I can do an upload of this stuff and maybe some of the others too if peeps are interested? I can see already they are. They'll be hefty rar/zip files though, so give me a little time to sort it out.

"in my time of dyin" also on the dylan album.. is the traditional used for "come down easy"

call the doctor may be somewhat inspired by the jj cale song of the same name from his first album, similar theme and chord rhythm.. the same album that has the original "they call me the breeze/run"

After falling in love with that Evie Sands track, I did some hunting around on YouTube and found this:-

.....and now I think I'm in love with the young Ms Sands herself. She was lovely wasn't she.

Right, here are the compilations...(if there are any issues with me posting the links here, let me know and I'll remove them):

The Spacemen 3 110 (605MB)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OGG9T2SK

The Jason Spaceman 55 (337MB)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q57A5U5A

...and as a bonus, The Bobby Gillespie 50 (261MB)

HUGE thanks to FMSpaceman on LastFM for putting these comps together (Hello FMSpaceman, I know you're watching). I'm indebted to the guy as he's introduced me to a shitload of stuff I'd never heard of before, and as a result it's sent me off on all kinds of new tangents of musical discovery. 8)

Hi there... thanks for posting! Are the 110 tracks supposed to be in order by running time, or did I have some kind of download error? Thanks!

It's mostly in order by running time, apart from the opening track and the penultimate one from what I can tell.

Thanks for these. Just looking at the tracklisting for the JasonSpaceman 55, a large chunk of the first 15 odd songs are from the first Breezeblock session i heard Jason do.

Does anyone think Primal Scream's 'Movin' On Up' is a direct rip-off of Stephen Stills 'Love The One You're With'? Or has Bobby G admitted this?

aye...The Can most likely appropriated that lyric from 'Amazing Grace' - the traditional, not the Spiritualized song...

'Movin' On Up rips off Stills? Sure - and I'm certain Primal Scream would be the first to acknowledge any lift per se!

I think one of the most important things about that band is that they've always freely promoted or enthused about any current influences or borrowing...just like J. Spaceman.

Oh, I wouldn't say everything's been done before, not by a long shot. We've been in situations in the past where people have made the same pronouncement only to be proven very wrong within a short period of time, and I don't see any reason why that should change.

agreed!
It´s a myth created by musicians with poor imagination.
People have always recycled, borrowed or been inspired by older stuff.

All in friendly banter, could you please tell me an album in the last decade that sounded totally original. By original I mean you've never heard ANYTHING like it before, no influences, sounds, or arrangements...

No influences? That would be tough. But I'll say that Oneida are unlike any band I have ever heard anywhere. Their music is, as I have said elsewhere, hard to classify. It's psychedelic for sure but they are in a territory all of their own in my opinion.

That has never been possible -
It would be like saying that somewhere there is a human who is totally original and doesn´t share any genetic traits with any other mammal. It would not be a human or a mammal or even anything alive in the known universe.

People are influenced in the womb. It´s in the way humans and many animals function..
monkey see monkey do - originality starts with mimicking.

I agree the whole "everythings been done before in music" is just rubbish, and is exactly a lack of imagination and/or the application thereof.

Beware of any musician who utters these dreaded words. Chances are they have become jaded, uninspired and probably not very good. Oddly enough Kurt Cobain talked of such matters in one of his last interviews...

Anyway, this idea reminds me of the hoary old rock-critic opinion that recorded music hit a peak in a certain year and has been downhill ever since. Again, this idea is borne from similar experiences as above I think.

There's plenty of music out there that sounds very unlike most other things( an noted above very difficult to define original etc) Calibrate your ears...just takes a bit of digging I think.

The Spank Rock (XXXXXX) record from a few years ago for me sounds like nothing else around. It's wonderful.
(and filthy too as a bonus! :D )

That new Jonelle Monáe album (The Archandroid) I was raving on about in another thread is spectacular as well. While it draws together many differnt influences and styles and genres it sounds really fresh and in no way contrived. It's amazing and for me I think is the album of the year. Years...

What I was trying to say in my first post is that the best bands take their influences and put a fresh spin on them to create a sound that's all their own. I admittedly didn't state this clearly but you'll get no argument from me that great music is still being released. Even a band who you think sounds utterly unlike anything you've heard before has been influenced by tons of musicians and their music reflects those influences.
