Bunnymen

Post by spzretent »

I was at a thrift shop today and saw a whole bunch of great 80's cds. Among them Heaven Up Here and the S/T grey and black cover Bunnymen cds. These were the re-releases w/extra tracks too.
While listening to Heaven Up Here I was struck by how timeless their music is. It hasn't dated one bit. Perhaps its because Will Sergeant was so influenced by 60's psych bands. Seems like bands w/that influence create timeless music.
Then I started thinking about Porcupine(my personal fave Bunnymen lp), then Ocean Rain and I just thought to myself how great all these releases are. And there haven't been any Bunnymen copyists. Cant be that its too hard. See: Strokes, Interpol, Vines etc.
Just a nod to a great 5 release run that rivals most bands.

I agree - they made some astonishing music and it was music that carved its own niche without being so obviously derivative.

I think lots of bands were influenced by them too. The best Echo & The Bunnymen tribute track I know is this unreleased yet completely brilliant song by The Flaming Lips (who did a fantastic cover of All That Jazz/Happy Death Men of course). This is called 'Jesus Is Floatin'' and is pure Bunnymen - even to the vocals...

I remember when those reissues first came out I snapped them all up too. a really solid catalogue with some great bonus tracks. Gonna be obvious and say Ocean Rain is my favourite, but I really like the Grey s/t one too- I think that's really underrated. Love Will's tight, angular, 'no blues' guitar style. Always thought there was a lot of Tom Verlaine in there as well as psych bands.

Not a big fan of Crocodiles, it seems really scrappy and half-formed to me.

I've seen the band twice since the reformation- curiously one time they were brilliant and one time really boring.

I remember they played some concerts which were divided into 2 sets. 1 set consisted of covers of mainly psychelic music and after the break they came back and played their own numbers. Remember especially their light show on this tour.

I purposely didn't mention Crocodiles as its my least fave Bunnymen record. I know it is the debut but I never listen to it.
The cover is great. I totally agree about the Tom Verlaine element in Will's guitar. Not to mention Pete De Frietas being the best drummer I ever saw live. I dont really want to date myself(but I will)- I saw Keith Moon and John Bonham live.

On the other hand Crocodiles might be my favourite one. I guess that's a hallmark of a really great band though - everyone has their own favourites but can still agree that overall the band is fantastic. :D

Likewise saw them twice with the reunion lineup, and with almost identical results.

And that Flaming Lips track - Quite an astonishing replication of the sound.

this thread brings back a happy memory of seeing the Bunnymen (without Ian Mc) and KLF performing on stage together at a working mens club in Bootle, Liverpool. They did 'What Time is Love' as the encore. The Bunnymen hjad someone standing in onlead vocals. I'm sure it was some sort of benefit for the striking Liverpool dockers.

I was a huge Bunnymen fan as a teenager although lost the faith around the time of Bring on the Dancing Horses. I got to see them a few times including a storming show at the Hammersmith Palais on the Ocean Rain tour.

I’m also pretty sure that it was the Bunnymen who turned me on to The Velvet Underground and The Doors. I remember an interview with Ian McCulloch and when asked about Marc Almond he said he’s Venus in Furs and we’re Pale Blue Eyes.

Crocodiles is my favourite too. Give the re-release another listen people, it really is a great record.

i went through my bunnymen obsession about 10 years ago. still really love them any time i listen to them- especially the first four albums. i've always been real partial to 'heaven up here' because it's probably their most unique- they did so much stuff on it that they never really bothered to revisit at all (i.e. 'a promise,' 'over the wall,' 'all i want,' 'zimbo'). i flip-flop all the time because really all four of those albums are great. i don't have the self-titled one anymore. i love to throw on 'ocean rain' every once in a while and be blown away by that title track- it was the first bunnymen track i ever heard- a friend put it on a mixtape for me along with some slowdive, cocteau twins, nick cave, codeine and then a bunch of other gothy stuff i'd never heard as well.
it is true that they don't have hardly any copyists. the only exception for me is interpol- i always thought the singer's voice called mcculloch to mind more than ian curtis and musically they were always more in line with the bunnymen as well.

The self titled 4th is the first thing I heard under the influence of the psychedlics and hence still holds a place in my heart ,Bombers Bay in particular ,was a long time fan anyway ,who wasn`t inthose days, but never realized music could sound quite like that.

I will say this. Bring On The Dancing Horses has what may easily be one of my favorite Bunnymen b sides in Over Your Shoulder. And there are a boatload of incredible Bunnymen b sides.

"Angels and Devils" being a great example of an incredible b side. I don't think they ever released a studio version, but the live take they released was magnificent. This was a staple in the live set from about 84-88 if I remember correctly. Another great example of a Bunnymen b side was Do It Clean which was typically the last track at gigs when I went to see them.

For several years (1982-1987) the Bunnymen were a ferocious live act, getting close the equally the power and intensity of The Clash and very early New Order. I used to watch them play regularly at that time and never saw a duff gig. They never really recovered this intensity after De Freitas died IMHO.

Sadly, their reunion tour show in Melbourne a few years was one of the worst gigs I've ever seen. It went a long way towards confirming my view that a reunion is always going to be a potentially good way to ruin some great memories/myths. I'ld give the VU show at Wembley Arena a big mention for this too.....still I'm glad I went.

Guess it takes all sorts, I can't get on with Crocodiles at all.

I'll also add to the shout out for the title track to Ocean Rain, that and My Kingdom are quite a pairing (love the guitar solo on the latter)

I see that mentions of the records since the reunion are notable by their absence?

Absolutely - Bedbugs and Ballyhoo (a b-side here too) is also brilliant - I love Bring On The Dnacing Horses (that long mix particularly) with all my heart.

There is a studio version of Angels and Devils by the way; it should be on the reissue of Ocean Rain.

Post-reform I think Evergreen has some decent tunes on, but overall I would say that they lost it after Ocean Rain.

Definitely a top ten band for me. McCulloch's "best band in the world" schtick gets a bit tedious, but if Will Sergeant was in my band, I'd probably make the same claim.
The self titled album seems to polarize a lot of people, but as it was the first one I heard it holds a special place in my heart. Stunning guitar work throughout. Maybe a little too straightforward compared to Heaven Up Here or Porcupine, and not as orchestral as Ocean Rain, but still an excellent LP.

I'm glad that I got the chance to see them on top of their game in 1987. They were headling with New Order and Gene Loves Jezebel. I remember cutting high school with my mates and brother and ending up in Bezerkely (Berkeley) in the middle of the afternoon and waiting in line for about 5-6 hours or so. I remember the fans 'coining' GeneLovesJezebel to get off the stage. New Order, as usual gave a great show, but the Echo&theBunnymen were on fire. Ian McCulloch had about a pack of cigarettes during that gig :P

They came here in Oakland about 4 months ago for the 'Ocean Rain' tour w/ Orchestra. Didn't go to that one, again it's really not the Bunnymen w/ De Freitas gone and their were only 2 original members (Ian and someone else ?)

Saw them in 87? , 4th album time and still got the feeling I was seeing them at the end of their time ,although nothing better than hearing that band bursting into The Cutter,
some of my friends go see them everytime they come ,since the Evergreen album ,maybe seen them 3 times ,and evrytime its been good ,a good show but not quite ,but probably will not see them again,

its funny coz you can look at the Bunnymen a couple of ways ,underachievers who never made the next step like there rivals (at the time) U2 ,Simple Minds into the stadiums ,which was a possibility,or a post punk/garage band who reached out from the gutter and managed to forge against their circumstance wonderful,

I tend to err on the view that they were a wonderful band ,nevermind what they could or never did .

I would have to say their catalog stands up far better today than either of their contemporaries U2 & Simple Minds. I saw them several times between Porcupine and Ocean Rain. They were a fantastic live band. A few times after and was never blown away. I have not bothered w/the recent tours. Last time I saw them the drummer from Haircut 100 was drumming for them. I think his name was Blair Cunningham.

Will Sergeant has an autobiography out tomorrow, which I’m looking forward to reading. It’s called Bunnyman. He has always come across as a down to earth person with a dry sense of humour. I remember years ago on a Rock Family Trees episode about the post punk Liverpool bands, he was talking about the end of the first phase of the Bunnymen. He said something along the lines of ‘Mac was acting like he was God & refusing to sound check, but even God has to sound check sometimes’.

Absolutely loved the Bunnymen first time round and personally, it’s hard to think of another band (apart from Spiritualized of course) who’s first four albums were so consistently great & still sound amazing. Been playing a lot of Bunnymen stuff recently after buying the RSD issue of Live In Liverpool. Always thought that was taken from a fairly recent tour but it turns out the gig was 20 years ago!

blimey I didn't know Soulseek was still going. I had a big phase of that the best part of 20 years ago where I was investigating a lot of new music and you'd find random bootlegs

I'm kinda tempted by this book but I'd be more interested in the next part when you would get into the Bunnymen career proper.
I must admit with rock biogs I sometimes skip or speed read the chapters on the family history and childhood

i read my library's copy. you can tell why mac was the singer, the book lacks personality and charisma. the few highlights were seeing joy division for the first time, meeting mac (macul) in his transparent plastic sandals, the first gig, how they got the name (julian cope introduced them as thus by choosing the least ridiculous name from a list he'd been given). the book ends with them being told they need a drummer to sign for a label (after Zoo, that is)

in my opinion, not worth reading unless you are interested in a boring recitation of music listened to and conversations along the lines of...

alright, lad
alright

People need to follow Will Sergeant on social media if they haven't done so already - he's doing it the right way- keeping it positive, and he actually responds to people. And seems to have a chill life listening to records, going out on his motorbike and walking the dog. Living the dream.

New doc by Paul Simpson on the late 70s Liverpool scene. There is also a book tied in with it.

Will Sergeant also currently working on Vol.2 of his memoirs.
