I've got a vintage Sansui turntable that I like a lot and I use a Denon receiver. Here's a Denon that's similar to the one I have:

You can't buy a cheap receiver with a photo input, but that's probably a good thing.
I know that Linn makes really nice, new turntables. You might want to check them out:

You can go the amp/preamp way or just get a receiver.

For vinyl I have a Rega Planar 3 turntabtable with the RB300 arm. I play this via a NAIM NAC 92 pre amp and NAP 90 power amp into a pair of Cyrus 780 speakers. I also have a NAIM CD 3.5 and FlatCap to spin compact discs. All of this kit cost an arm and a leg back in the late 1990's and is the dogs bollox.
The most used part of my Hi Fi is a Beresford Caiman D-A-C bought on EBay for under $300 which is linked to my PC to play my collection of FLACs. This is a fan-fucking-tastic piece of kit. Using the PC you can listen to music for hours without having to get off yer bum to flip an LP/change the CD and there is no compromise with the quality of playback.
Get yourself onto Ebay, and check out your local Hi-Fi dealers for trade-ins. The quality of some of the second hand kit is unbelievable given the prices.

I've got a pro-ject debut III, sounds great but was a bit of a pain setting up the weights. After that it's been like a dream.

Linn>Linn>Linn
Want to change it to:
Linn>Dual mono tubes>B&W diamonds
(Hopefully in a year or so)
I believe that digital and analogue should be separated.
