Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
i like the Black Angels and stuff, but $10 for the doves/drone 7". thats a bit much. im starting to get fed up with these price increases when it comes to buying vinyl. i got that 7" for 5 dollars at my local record store.
Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
$10 is way too much for a 7", as far as I'm concerned. That is annoying.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
The Black Angels’ 3rd LP, titled Phosphene Dream, will be released on September 14th in the US and September 13th in the UK. The band is the first to be signed to the legendary UK label Blue Horizon Records, which has been relaunched. The album was recorded with Dave Sardy over a period of 6 months in Los Angeles. The first track ‘Bad Vibrations’ is available for download on the entry page of the website. Album pre-sale and full release info, including the vinyl release and limited edition packages will be released soon, along with upcoming tour dates.
New European festival dates have been announced, the Black Angels will play Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway, Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK and Rock en Seine in Spain before heading back to the US to play the Jim Jarmusch curated stage at ATP New York.
Also, new merchandise is up in the store, including a very limited edition hoodie and green Directions To See A Ghost shirt.
Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
Christian Bland, guitarist and occasional vocalist for the Black Angels has a solo cd out Christian Bland & The Revelators - The Lost Album.Very gritty and raw in some places and some reminds me of Syd Barrett.

They're also playing in London on August 26th. That Bad Vibrations track sounds decent, looking forward to the album.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
hmmm i listened to another new song called Telephone.. it's kind of a new direction, not sure if I like it, it's barely two minutes long, and although it still has the sixties vibe it's much lighter and poppier than their usual sound..
http://www.spin.com/articles/exclusive- ... ack-angels
I kind of wanted them to get even heavier and dronier
The second album was interesting because, although generally of the same ilk, it was dronier and less commercial than the first (the reverse of a bands usual development)

i've just ordered the limited edition package. but a bit worried that they recorded this album with Dave Sardy, oasis' dig your... guy. just cross my fingers for he didn't spoil their pure black grease.
Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
FWIW, I think Dig Out Your Soul sounds fantastic. Didn't Sardy also produced Don't Believe The Truth, though? That one sounds like a real turd. Not sure how to explain that.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
it's been ages since i stopped listening to oasis. so i can't expect how mr. sardy influeces on that album.
imo, speaking of the second album, they'd done a really great job with a young texan erik wofford. so i just think they don't need any big name to make their sound.

Well, "Telephone" is certainly different for The Black Angels and, unfortunately, pretty weak. This is the song that they're giving away to rope people in and get them psyched for the new album? It's not a good sign.

apparantly the new album is only about 1/2 hour long.
Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
I think Telephone sounds great personally.
I don't know why people would be apprehensive with the new album, Bad Vibrations is much more in the vein of their 'classic' sound.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
Saw them supporting Wolfmother in January and the new material that night definitely had a very 60s / Elevators edge to it. I think Telephone is decent enough, not too happy at the idea of yet another 30 minute "album" though. Surely bands can come up with enough material for 45 minutes?

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
They were absolutely amazing at La Route Du Rock last weekend. Though, saying that, I was utterly hammered at the time. The new stuff is certainly a lot less epic and droney than the material from the first 2 albums but it certainly went down well none-the-less. Just tried getting tickets for their show at the Borderline next week but obviously its sold out. I'm already seeing Black Mountain in Brighton in September but the thought of seeing both of these in London on the same bill in October is certainly very tempting.

Watched the Letterman clip they played Telephone, not amazingly original to be honest. But back to good ol' rock and roll.
Like how Paul and the band played the show out with the tune. Sounded as good!

I liked it. I really love Alex Mass's vocal style, not just on this track but just generally. Anyway, here's that Letterman clip:-

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
It wasn't terrible and it did have a very "Elevators" vibe to it. Considering the boner that they have for Mr. Erickson, this shouldn't really be any kind of a surprise. I'm still going to buy the album though. (I loved "Bad Vibrations"!)
Something Wicked That Way Goes...
Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
i bought this record today and i actually am pleasantly surprised by how much i like it. i would also like to note that i think 'telephone' is completely worthless. the rest of the record is quite good though- very condensed and i think it's a welcome change. initially i was hoping they'd continue down the path they'd started with 'directions to see a ghost,' but realistically it probably wouldn't've worked so well if they'd tried to expand on that one- it was a pretty definitive statement imo. i'd say that it's more in line with 'passover' but it has much more of a 60's vibe. it is also very obvious that the band has slimmed down a bit. i'm going to start trying to gather all of the digital bonus tracks, which should be interesting.
one thing- i bought the record on vinyl and it was $23 and didn't have any of the bonus tracks (which i think is pretty weak). i had thought that it was a double lp (as did the shop i bought it from- it's packaged like one) and figured that this would probably be the case (since the 3x lp 'directions to see a ghost' vinyl had two bonus tracks from that 2008 tour ep), but in case anyone was wondering it definitely is not.

I'm liking this album the more I play it. Anyone up for joining forces to collect the download only extra songs from the various sources?
Getting very excited about seeing them in London on Thursday night with Black Mountain, should be a good 'un.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
Fantastic gig in Dublin on Monday night, in fact gig of the year so far for me.
At the end of the evening they said they'd be back in February. Just hope it doesn't turn out to be the same night as Mogwai.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
Saw them last week in London supporting Black Mountain but it should have been the other way round as they were far better. Gutted I missed the first 20mins of their set but what I saw was well impressive. Loads of stuff from the first album and the material from their latest album really sits well in the set.

Re: New Black Angels Website (and album due in Summer)
Thought this might be the case. I've seen Black Mountain at 3 different festivals over the past 3 years and each time i was left disappointed. On all three occasions the bulk of their set was made up of their most mellow songs, surely in a festival environment a band should play their most upbeat, rocking tunes to try and attract some new fans and to give their own fans something to get excited about. Three times and i've still not heard them play No Satisfaction.Ads wrote:Saw them last week in London supporting Black Mountain but it should have been the other way round as they were far better.

Some nice clips of the Angels performing 3 tracks off the last album live in the Rolling Stone studio plus a short interview clip too:-

I'm loving the Black Angels and their new album more and more. I can't get enough of them or the Warlocks at the moment. Definitely my two favourite bands currently on the live circuit.

Here's a sweet sounding stereo matrix of The Black Angels to fill your psych-rock prescription. The Angels openly love Asheville (and Asheville reciprocated with a sellout) and it always shows in their performance. This 'un is no exception. A more compact set than their past shows here due to the co-headline bill with Black Mountain but in many ways all the more potent due to that fact. Loud one here folks. Wore plugs and my ears still rang most of the morning. Again, nice balance on this one with really clear vocals (sometimes Alex can get lost in the fuzz and reverb). Check the samples and use the democratic process. Y'all enjoy!

just read that interview posted above.. love this bit about the bands 'Austin Psych Fest'
We’ve been trying to get three bands to play since the beginning - Clinic, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, so we’re hoping to get some of them this year. We’d love to get Spiritualized to play and Sonic Boom.
now that would be some lineup
