New Teenage Fanclub album & tour

Post by TheWarmth »

News story posted on Pitchfork. There's an mp3 you can download there, too.

I'm really psyched about this. I thought Man-Made was incredible. I also saw them live for that album and they blew me away.

Man-Made, the most recent LP from Scottish power-pop survivors Teenage Fanclub, came out five long years ago. On June 8, its follow-up will finally arrive, via Merge. It's called Shadows, it's 12 songs long, and (as you can clearly see above) it comes equipped with fully badass cover art. Up there, we've got the album track "Baby Lee" available for your streaming/downloading pleasure. And if you click below, we've also got the tracklist.

In the spring, the band will tour the UK and Ireland, and we've got those dates below. They're also planning an American tour for September, but no dates on that one yet.

Shadows:

01 Sometimes I Don't Need to Believe in Anything
02 Baby Lee
03 The Fall
04 Into the City
05 Dark Clouds
06 The Past
07 Shock and Awe
08 When I Still Have Thee
09 Live With the Seasons
10 Sweet Days Waiting
11 The Back of My Mind
12 Today Never Ends

Teenage Fanclub:

05-01 London, England - Koko
05-27 Manchester, England - Academy 2
05-28 Sheffield, England - Leadmill
05-30 Dublin, Ireland - Academy
06-01 Aberdeen, Scotland - The Warehouse
06-02 Glasgow, Scotland - ABC
06-03 Edinburgh, Scotland - The Picture House
06-04 Leeds, England The Cockpit
06-06 Bristol, England - Academy
06-07 Birmingham, England - Academy 2

Already pencilled in the Glasgow show... been a long time coming!

p.s. Man Made was hugely under-rated!

I love the Fannies. Saw them on Brighton on the Man Made tour and they pretty much did a greatest hit set which was fantastic. The bad news this time around is that they're not playing Brighton....the good news is they're playing London on a Saturday night. Hoorah!

I remember that Brighton show - it was indeed ace. The wife loved is so much that she dashed off to London a few days later to see them again. Is it really five years since the last album? Must give it another go, although it didn't do much for me at the time.

anyone know why it's been so long since the last album?

I was rather keen on them when I was a nipper. I used the listen to Grand Prix incessantly, pure guitar pop goodness. The bands melodies are brilliant- you are singing the songs almost before they are over. I also used to enjoy Songs From Northern Britain but it is on the more bland side.

I saw the band live in Northampton a few years back and thought it was rather poor, but from what people are saying maybe it was an off night.

I busted out that best of album they put out awhile back last night. There are three songs exclusive to the compilation and one of them, "Did I Say," is utterly mind-blowing. 2 minutes and 25 seconds of sheer pop perfection. If anyone wants it, just let me know. I know people often don't buy best ofs to avoid redundancy if they already have most of the band's albums.

Has any album since Grand Prix topped it? I bought a copy of Songs Of Northern Britain on a dodgy cassette on Koh San Road many moons ago, found it a bit dull then haven't bought anything by them since. No bad thing though as Grand Prix is way up high on my pleasure list. Played it for the first time in yonks last weekend and it's still perfect.

I haven't heard Songs From Northern Britain. Howdy is ok, but Man-Made is fantastic.

I liked A Catholic Education and The King but what followed was awful rubbish altogether, i gave up at Grand Prix. In fact it's because The Fannies were always being compared to Big Star/ Alex Chilton that i totally avoided anything he had been involved in.

The free download, "Baby Lee," is exquisite. I can't imagine hearing Grand Prix and giving up on the band. It's one of their masterpieces. No hard feelings, of course.

I, at first, agreed w/Sunray until I decided to go back and gives the Fannies another spin a few months ago. All the records have some fantastic moments. Still, my favorite is A Catholic Education w/Songs From A Northern Britian pulling up the rear. I have not heard Man Made(in fact I never even heard of it until this thread).

Blimey, I had to re-read that post a couple of times. Can't quite believe you've totally dismissed Bandwagonesque and Grand Prix....they're two great albums by a band who were on top of their game at that point. I didn't think anyone could not like those two albums but they're you go. Vive la difference!

Does anyone have the bonus tracks from the Japanese version of Thirteen that they'd be willing to send my way? I'd be happy to return the favor with something of equal quality!

Indeed :) I was baffled by Bandwagonesque's popularity at the time, i just thought it was an incredibly dull album with possibly the worst artwork of all time. Looking back now and remembering that it was held up there with Screamadelica, Loveless, Nevermind it just seems all the more bonkers. Anyway, i hope everyone enjoys their gigs/album.

Is that the extra CD with Goody Goody Gum Drops, Radio, Its Hard to Fall In Love and Gene Clarke on it? If it is I have them, but didn't think Id bought the Japanese version. Paul, PM me if you want these and you might have to talk me through YouSendIt or the like as I'm rubbish when it comes to these sort of things.

Huge thanks to Ads for providing me with the tracks he listed, which are actually different from the bonus tracks from the Japanese cd version of Thirteen. I found a copy this morning for a reasonable price on ebay, so hopefully I'll have it in hand in a week or so. Here are the extra tracks (I'm particularly interested in hearing Older Guys, one of my favorite Burritos tracks):

14. Genius Envy*
15. Don's Gone Columbia*
16. Chords of Fame*
17. Weird Houses*
18. Golden Glades*
19. Older Guys (Flying Burrito Bros. cover)*

I've also got that best of as I lost Grand Prix a few years ago (well I leant it to someone who never gave it back) so got it to fill in the gaps and to sort of replace that. It's really good isn't it, it works so well as they are a cracking singles band, great packaging and I also love how they chopped a few seconds off some songs to cram as many on there as possible!

Did I Say is quite lovely!

No problems Paul, pleased to be of help. Like I said to you, these tracks are the B-sides to the Radio and Norman 3 singles. Why do the Japanese always get the CD albums with extra tracks on....its not fair!

i'll need to check, but the TFC forum did a similar thing to the "Real Complete Works" which has a fair amount of b-sides and import-only tracks. I have it about, so if anyone is interested, i can upload. Think there are 7 CDs worth...

I don't know if I could quite digest 7 discs worth of T.F. rarities and b-sides, but I would certainly be interested in one or two discs worth of the best stuff from that set if you felt like putting one together.

I just received my Japanese cd of Thirteen in the mail. It's got 19 tracks in total, so 6 bonus tracks. I had never owned this album before, so everything aside from the hits was new to me. I have to admit that so far, I'm kind of disappointed. The guitars are mostly way too low in the mix with the vocals and drums way too high in the mix. I can't stand how weak the guitars sound. This seems to be the case on almost every track. Anyone else feel the same? The songs are almost all great, but I can't stand the mixes.

A big Thank YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to Laz69 for upping the Teenage Fanclub rarities CDs.
I have most of them as vinyl singles, CD singles etc, and with a renewed interest in the band since they released the fantastic "Shadows" album, I was listening to all those little bits and pieces of my record collection. Laz, you made my life so much easier :-))
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
DorianGray.

I have been having some computer problems recently, hence why I'm trying to do some posts using my mobile.

I do have the full nine volume collection. If I can get my computer to sort itself out and if it's okay with moderators, I'd be happy to try and upload these for you.

Very much more sedate nowadays compared to years ago, however, any chance to hear their songs live is definitely a night to look forward to. They have mellowed and matured like a fine wine and never fail to entertain and make you feel warm and fuzzy with their beautifully crafted pop songs. Is always hard to decide whether i like Gerry's or Norman's songs best... probably Gerry's. Such a wonderful sense of dreamy harmonies and a great voice too. Norman's are bit more popy and catchy but always worth a singalong. Raymond's songs are good too but just not as immediate as the other pair IMO... however, when he kicks into Everything Flows (which has become the encore closer of choice) it really doesn't matter at all... THAT is as perfect a song as you will EVER hear!

I'll definitely try to be at the Barras gig.

"Did I Say" is my favorite TF song. I think it was one of two new tracks included on the Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Seconds – A Short Cut to Teenage Fanclub compilation. Absolutely stunning. I finally found a 7" copy after years of searching. It arrived two days ago. Beautiful. Check it out.

Did I Say is a gorgeous song.
part of me wishes their guitars were a bit grungier like the early stuff, but they remain superb songwriters. I'll probably be going along to the Birmingham show.

I've been getting heavily into Songs From Northern Britain recently. Anyone know if the b-sides are worth tracking down? Any specific recommendations?

Northern Britain is superb! Not really digging the new one on first listen, looking forward to seeing the show though.

A while ago a kind soul posted an Ultimate Teenage Fanclub set of CDs featuring B Sides, outtakes, covers etc. I've uploaded Disc 7 here which featured all the SFNB B Sides you mention:

As long as you don't feel I stole your thunder - certainly didn't want to.......

When you originally upped these, it was great and really kind. If you're having difficulty accessing any of the files, I'm more than happy to help....

Very much interested in these if I may get copies. I am seeing them in NYC on October 15th and am very excited. I realize I am new to the forum, but again would love to get my hands on the Ultimate Collection if possible. Thank you!
