John Craven and Spiritualized
Whilst watching Countryfile just now I heard the opening bars of If I Were With Her Now playing as some incidental music at the start of a segment about wildlife in cities! Made me smile.
Has anyone else heard Spiritualized in strange or unexpected places?

The Toffee Crisp ad of 15 years ago or so was a little odd.
Re: John Craven and Spiritualized
On "Come Dine With Me" a few weeks back, "Baby, I'm Such A Fool" was playing as intro music.
It's nice to be liked,
But it's better by far to get paid.

True, never saw it myself though.Ads wrote:What?runcible wrote:The Toffee Crisp ad of 15 years ago or so was a little odd.
Ladies and Gentlemen was used for a VW ad at the back end of the 90s (new Beetle?)
Plus more recently for the new Golf (saw this myself in Italy; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it9KIZqttqE)

Yup - it was a bit from If I Were With Her Now. Most surprising. I remember people yelling out 'Toffee Crisp!' at various gigs around that time.Ads wrote:What?runcible wrote:The Toffee Crisp ad of 15 years ago or so was a little odd.

That was a huge campaign including:
Ladies and Gents by Spz
Absurd by Fluke
Parsec by Stereolab
Renaissance Affair by Hooverphonic
Guitaristic House Organisation by «Rinôçérôse»
Can't remember anymore.
But I do remember it being aired and the graphics were quite flower power (beetles creating flowers)

It only seemed to last a few weeks 'til it was dropped and then they had completely different music on the same ad. Couldn't believe my ears the first time it came on.runcible wrote:Yup - it was a bit from If I Were With Her Now. Countryfile and Spz is a nice combination, i think. However, i looked at that terrible VW ad. It just didn't seem to fit with me. Spz music is held in such high regard by me that to hear it used in such a way as to advertise a product seems almost blasphemous...

hopefully it was this song:

from the darkest part of my grey memory i somehow remember that Mouse On Mars was also on the same plate. i could be very wrong here, but it's the "weird" subject, i mean the commercial, that triggers the past to surface.
actually this Mouse on Mars video reminds me of Kevin Shields remix of Primal Scream song "If They Move, Kill 'Em". overbaked with überlayers on overachieving überideas. fantastic massive wall of guts and glory. frantic.

W: What are we supposed to do with that?
M: Eat it.
W: Eat it? Fucker’s alive.
M: Yeah, you’ve got to kill it.
W: Me? I’m the firelighter and fuel collector.

Re: John Craven and Spiritualized
I remember an advert for the return of Richard & Judy to TV, presumably after they left their morning show and went to their tea-time slot. It featured different people clearly obsessed with them e.g. a tattooist inking "Judy" onto a man, while the man says his girlfriend's name is Jenny (or something) and the tattooist says she should change it to Judy. Then as the music swelled, it showed close ups of those people's sad faces before revealing that Richard & Judy were returning to TV... the music swelling was the big build up before the final choruses of "Stop Your Crying"...

Don't forget Lay It Down Slow being used on the finale of Prison Break.. hence bringing loads of random people to the Spz last.fm page and saying things like "omg love the Prison Break song!!"

I used to work in radio and advertising, and it was my experience that often people doing ads and creative work were WAY cooler than pretty much any of the content they were asked to work with. We would go out of our way to insert cool music and subtle cultural homages everywhere we could -- including lots of Spiritualized, Verve, Stereolab, library music, etc. I fit that kind of stuff in the actual musical rotation when I could (the odd late shift here and there) but it got a lot of play in promotional ads and that kind of thing.Luminescence wrote:Countryfile and Spz is a nice combination, i think. I understand people's ambivalence about advertising, but in this media environment it can be a tool to get good music heard by a much larger audience than will log on to music blogs.
