Re: Spiritualized New Album???

Post by Laz69 »

Just had it confirmed by the man himself too via PM.
The photo where I'm playing the 3 guitar is from a gig in about 1986 at the Northampton Roadmender. I was playing with my band The Tell Hearts and Spacemen 3 were playing with us. In those days we'd do swap gigs where a band from Northampton would play in Rugby and vice versa a week or two later. I'd broken a string on my guitar so I borrowed Jason's "3" Telecaster for the rest of the gig.
So there you go... :D

I actually find it refreshing these days to meet someone who doesn't use these websites. So really, the next I want to hear of the new Spiritualized album is the date of release and final tracklisting, to be honest. I like my favourite artists vanishing for 2 years and coming back with a record. I miss that.
I guess I quite liked the video released behind the scenes for the making of 'A + E'. Funny because the album didn't really sound how I imagined it would after hearing the snippets of music on that video.
I do like bands to kind of become like mad scientists locked away in the lab and emerging much later a bit frazzled, holding their final product of what they've been obsessing over for many months. Kraftwerk are probably the best example- I always imagined them making all this out-there music on their own wavelength, oblivious to what was going on in the world outside their studio.
Brilliant - and I completely agree. Fuck twitter man, that's the real satanic madness right there. "OMG, just done an amazing shit..."

Fuck you. And sorry for the crudeness. But really. Why bother.

And yes, the video on here, there must be stacks of unused/unreleased stuff done for A&E - what happened to that amazing, sort of ambient keyboard part being played?

Saturday, as I set off on my journey to Three Floyds in Indiana(see Other thread) I brought the two bonus discs from the LAGWAFIS reissue. Thought for sure i would fast forward thru some of the tracks but I didn't. It was fascinating listening. Some incredible stuff on there. That they stayed unreleased until Jason decided it was time.
Twitter? Not signed up. I just dont get it. All these pro athletes in the US use it all the time. Just ask Jay Cutler, the Chicago Bears quarterback, who essentially(it appears) quit on his team yesterday. All the reactions are from Twitter accounts of other NFL players. Some of which they probably might have thought twice about once it went public.
I got caught up in the whole Facebook thing. That was enough. I am not on it much, much less these days.

Reading all these Twitter reports, I can't help but hear Nathan Barely's voice. Wonder if he's changed his phone to one with a huge '3' key instead of the '5' key.

"Ladies and Gentlemen reissue, yeah? 12 x 3" CDs in a foil blister pack, prescription signed by Spaceman, shitload of demos. Only 1,000 ever made. Been available on the ATP site for over a year now- where's yours?!

I always guessed the PP poster on the wall suggested Chris Morris was a fan. And I was always secretly envious of that poster. I doubt Barley even got to The Slide Song. Still, glows in the dark, yeah? Totally fuckin' Mexico!

I don't know what to expect the sound like with this James Aparicio guy. He helped J with his Fuck Button remix as well, but he's not just an engineer or sound guy. It looks like he's also done programming and remixes (hands-on, not just changing levels) of things, as well as his "dub step" bass, so he's been a contributor to the album.

Can we expect a Spiritualizedadelica??

That would be awesome. There were some traces of that on Recurring that then went pretty much unexplored in subsequent releases, and it seems like a fruitful new direction. Songs in A&E seemed ever so slightly tired and warmed over to me, the first release of Spaceman's I would say that about, so I'm looking for J to come roaring back with the next release.

awesome. here's hoping they get the album out there asap.
also is this the first time jason has let someone else have so much input into the 'mixing'? i know in the past he's been more than a little hands on with this aspect of recording albums, so maybe this is a case on him easing up a bit.

anyway, something more 'psychedelic' (whatever that sounds like at this stage, haha) would be welcome.

I'm so confused these days with all of the ultra-specific genre names that I'm not sure what "dubstep bass" even means. I can't imagine that it will sound lame, though. Jason knows what he's doing and I think he generally has exquisite taste. The use of the word "dubstep" by his (co)-mixing engineer probably isn't something to be concerned about.

I have a feeling this could be a return to the simplicity of amazing grace but probs not with all that feedback, i reckon more accessible for the charts perhaps? :( but yeah, if i could choose what the next record to be like ' FUCKING HUGE' and psychedelic

I wouldnt get too excited, I bet this guy is working on a number of different albums at the mo so it may well not be the Spz one that is 'finished'.

and i bet his dubstep remark was largely a joke.

other nuggets from his past tweets seem to be that they have tried an autoharp on a track. i dont even know what that is.

isn't that a hand pump keyboard?

An autoharp is a instrument with 20-something strings that you strum on one side and press down a button for a chord on the other. It's short and wide. School teachers use them a lot. So does Jason.

Jason = school teacher.

Auto HARRP. Down with Twitter---

Post by BzaInSpace »

PJ Harvey has been playing an autoharp on her latest gigs apparently, and supposedly all over her new album. Looking forward to that...but anyway, an autoharp:

Image

Such a nice, easy instrument to play. You'll recognise it even if you think you don't - think of the wooshing guitar-like sounds from 'Angel Sigh' at the choruses. That's an autoharp...

I had to ask too......but have been reliably informed by my 18 year old daughter and her DJ friend that it has a distinct "wobble" sound. Although they have quite a broad range of musical tastes in general, it's the only type of music they listen to when partying.

Three examples they gave me:

aparently cop shoot cop is influneced by dnb accoridng to some old Q interview i read when amazing grace came out. the point is you can say you're influenced by bob dylan but if your records sound like public enemy then maybe it's the idea that has influenced them. people often a) sound completely like the ones they rip off or b) sound nothing like or c) blend themselves with their inspiration and make something new

Yeah I remember him mentioning Drum and Bass alot around the time of Ladies and Gentlemen. 'Aphrodite - Woman that rolls' was a particular favorite of his. I totally agree with bunnyben, It was definitely an influence, but I think it was more about capturing the energy and flow of those records rather than trying to mimic specific sounds and styles.

On the Nathan Barley style tweeting from Mr James Aparicio I just found this little gem: Recording vocal harmonies and looks like I've bag the long term loan of some quality analogue shit'

Well fucking specific yeah.

Spiritualized + Beats = Should Be Awesome...

Post by BzaInSpace »

The second part of 'I Think I'm In Love' always felt like a motorik dance tune, at least until the vocals start. The Chemical Brothers missed the boat completely with their very poor 'remix' IMO. (In this case, bolting on the vocal acapella to a substandard big beat track.)

Shoulda given that one to Andrew Weatherall too I think.

R.E. Drum and bass and jungle - in various interviews and stuff I've seen J's props to the likes of Boymerang, Grooverider and of course Aphrodite aka DJ Aphro.

I saw Aphrodite DJ twice at the turn of the century and he was fucking awesome. The first show has to count as one of the best live shows/sets/whatever I've ever seen - at Aberdeen's now defunct Glow303. I actually went and spoke to him afterwards, and fuelled by a mixture of insane beats and bass and that, told him he ought to remix Spiritualized. He said he'd never heard of them...

However, check his logo, which some of you may think is slightly familiar...

I'm sure I remember hearing the Chemical brothers saying they were very proud of it, - 'there best work' or some such. I don't think its bad, although not sure that Spiritualized members thought much of it.

For me, the best thing about the I Think I'm In Love single was the single edit by Mads. I thought that was a work of art.

It's time for a full-on country-gospel record, ala May The Circle Be Unbroken. I'm talkin' "I Saw The Light," "When I Lay My Burdens Down," "Dust On The Bible," etc.

I must say I'm getting pretty itchy about hearing something about a release date. The way the Radiohead album just appeared out of nowhere has made me impatient. I was hoping a release date before the summer, but I'm now starting to think it wont appear before Autumn.

Also no word on any festival dates yet in the summer which might also mean the album wont have surfaced by then.

Hopefully I'm reading this all wrong, and there is an astonishingly exciting press release being drafted at this very minute.

Seriously - ain't it weird how something like that announcement is like - almost - (for me at least) - "a hurricane inside my veins" ?

In one way I'd be well happy if they followed the Radiohead thing and released it as a download with the option to buy physical formats shortly after... but, but...

There's something so good about the proper artifact - the Spiritualized® level of detail asthetic within the artwork makes this more satisfying experience anyway.

But as Ben suggests, it could be a mere announcement about Jason about to appear in the latest series of 'Come Down With Me' (sorry)...

But....I don't think so!
