Son House is my favorite -- check out his first sides from the 20s. Also Blind Willie Johnson, the best of the country blues gospel singers.

My list is hardly the be all and end all of blues but I'd be recommending:

Son House for sure - I've got 'King of the Delta Blues' sounds great and I think includes a couple recorded by Alan Lomax - On 'Walking Blues' you can hear a train passing in the background. As raw as it comes.
Lightning Hopkins - Nightmare Blues
Bukka White
Blind Willie McTell
Muddy Waters
My favourite - Howlin' Wolf - Howlin Wolf/Moanin' in the moonlight.
Junior Kimbrough - get them all
Mississippi Records - seek this label out (http://www.honestjons.com/shop.php?LabelID=15593)

Nice.
Out of these MUDDY WATERS "HOOCHIE COOCHIE MAN" is quite nice. I like the Harmonica and Piano touches.
Gonna do a shot of whiskey and try and find more of these.
Junior Kimbrough has an interesting sound.

My favorite Blind Willie Johnson song is "Trouble Will Soon Be Over."

You might also want to check out Skip James if you like the really haunted stuff, and Charley Patton -- who i don't really get but is one of Bob Dylan's favorites.

The 1930 Skip James sessions are magic. You can get the record on Mississippi.

I also really, really like Jessie-Mae Hemphill. I first heard about her on Sonic Boom - Subterraneans comp. She is just incredible. Her albums aren't that easy to get a hold of sadly, but I haev 'She-Wolf' and it's classic.

I'm not a huge fan of Clapton's latter-day blues efforts, but in the 60s and 70s he did some really scorching blues with John Mayall and Derek & The Dominoes. Check out Bluesbreakers, the Dominoes "Live at the Fillmore" set, and his own "Just One Night" concert for some amazing tunes.

And in the best of his solo work he has more of a J.J. Cale-influenced country-blues shuffle with hints of reggae and gospel in there. He's inconsistent, but there's some great material he's done.

He was at his best when he dropped acid and Cream forced him to play distorted monster jazz!
..so I must agree that although blues breakers is a milestone he usually fails in "translating" afroamerican blues to the white middle class.. the more he tries to stay "true" to the blues, the more he fails.

I agree that Clapton can get annoying when he tries too hard to be "authentic," and though I agree he never had a good solo album we have to remember that in the 70s artists were expected to release an LP pretty much every year. If you condensed the 6-7 solo LPs Clapton recorded between the S/T and Another Ticket into 2-3 albums of the best material, you'd have some all-time classic records. His music from that period isn't the blues, but he's got some great songs that sound like sitting on a porch in the south somewhere drinking lemonade on a scorching hot day.

People have mentioned Eric Clapton and the Bluesbreakers (beano) album but in truth, even though that is Eric Clapton on the guitar you should really check out the man behind it all, Mr John Mayall.

Mayall's early album's from Bluesbreakers to 'Jazz Blues Fusion' and 'Movin' On' are all brilliant. My particular favorite Mayall albums though are 'USA Union' and 'Turning Point'. Some fantastic, stripped down live acoustic blues on the latter and Mayall's harmonica blowing and scat singing on 'Room to Move' are phenomenal and will raise the hairs on your neck and send shivers down the spine. Oh, and his 'Back to the Roots' LP is also a gem.

Back to the Bluesbreakers though, check out Mayall's second Bluesbreakers album 'A Hard Road' with Peter Green on guitar. This Bluesbreakers LP, in my opinion, is better than the Clapton (beano) one.

There is also a fantastic John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat collaboration album called 'Hooker-n-Heat' (great title 'eh?! :D ). Worth checking out for some serious electric boogie blues.

really good records

greeny is my favourite BB guitarist - check out Mayall´s "thru the years", not a proper album but actually has a few of the best tracks peter green ever has recorded (and not available elsewhere)
I also like "bare wires" and "the blues alone". "Crusade" and "blues from laurel canyon" are decent too.

I even used to have "diary of a band" where I think mick taylor (of stones fame) holds a note for 2 minutes or something.
pretty cocky for a 17 year old but he was not a genious like peter.

mayall is the best european blues artist - no competition as far as I´m concerned.

Agreed!

Yes, 'Bare Wires' and 'Laurel Canyon' are also great records. However, imho, on 'Laurel Canyon' he still seems to be trying to find himself whilst on 'USA Union' he is at his creative peak.

I recently heard a radio program about a guy who documented the blues music he heard growing up in his neighborhood in Vicksburg, Mississippi coming out of churches and on porches. Real, raw stuff. I wrote about it on my blog, with all the appropriate links to the book/CD and the radio show itself. I highly recommend it to anyone in search of the purest kind of blues that existed. It's not at all commercial and very honest and vital to the people that make the music:
