Interestingly someone stuck on the 1st Stones EP - 6 x 7 - at a mate's house quite recently. I hadn't heard most of these songs and was blown away by a few of the tracks on it so bought the 12 x 7 album that they appear on. The song that roars out is 'Empty Heart' which is almost an Elevators blueprint - chuck in Tommy Hall's jug and you've got half of You're Gonna Miss Me all worked out. What a belter it is.

Best band ever? Mmmmmmm... A decent shout but as everyone knows that award was claimed by Led Zeppelin some time ago.

Ah, OK. 5 x 5. I don't have it, just remember someone playing it and how good it was.

Working out who is the best of the great bands is an impossible task. If I'm in a Stones mood I find it hard to think of music that's better, but then the same thing happens when I play Zep, Beatles etc. Having said that I know which if the apparent greats I don't rate at all, but stating such things tends to wind people up!

I'll look out for those BBC Stones sessions. My favourite period is 68-72 - from which I have a large collection of out-takes courtesy of kind people on this board - but I'm enjoying some of the earlier stuff at the moment.

It's also worth saying that Mick Jagger - without doubt one of THE great vocalists of all time - can't actually sing very well. He's one of a list of fantastic singers without a great singing voice. Neil Young is a pretty decent example too.

I love the Stones in a giddy 2000 Light Years From Home kinda way. The first band I got heavily into, the one that made decadence look exciting and something to try so I did, my obsession for many years, buying up the biographies, watching the films and docs, looking at photos and hoping to drop into the scenes. What a band from the early years up to about Goats Head Soup. Jones or Taylor era? Depends on my mood. Jones looked so much cooler but Taylor had Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Sway.

We love you, of course we doooooo!

Performance, the film I've seen more times than any other. Quite an obsession in fact. I've built up a geek boy collection of material relating to that like the dvd, video, poster, BFI book about it, the novel, magazine articles blah blah blah. Watch it again and again then read up on it Mr B.Wheel, such a fascinating film and and circumstances surrounding it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_(film)

Wow - nice coincidence. I have a similar obsession for Performance. Got a poster in my kitchen (the 'Vice. And Versa.' one).

The DVD was a huge let down as they totally fucked the soundtrack by using only one channel of the stereo music soundtrack across both tracks (that was me who added that bit of info on Wikipedia as everyone else just said they'd missed bits of the soundtrack but i spotted what was wrong straightaway). So Jagger's 'Here's to old England' line is gone, as is the throb of his audio generator when he plugs a lead in, plus loads of guitar and drums. I wrote to Warners and complained I was so furious. So I have watched my DVD just once, preferring to watch a copy recorded off the TV which has the proper soundtrack.

If you'd like to PM me with notes on the film Johnny please do. I'm always up for sad anal Performance discussion!

Excellent! Not the soundtrack fck up but the general geek vibes you have, like me, concerning this great film. I've only watched the dvd once or twice and can't say the soundtrack problem leapt out at me even though it sounds stunningly obvious from what you say. I'll give it another viewing (harder these days as Mrs JB hates it) to check it out.

A friend of mine is a big fan too and has a copy where some of the voices, like Harry Flowers, are dubbed over with a posher voice and I've heard of different versions doing the rounds with soundtrack problems and other weird stuff. My VHS doesn't have that so maybe I've been lucky, or maybe the dvd does........just read your Wiki comments and note the bit about the shriek during the fluorescent light tube dance scene (Merry Clayton 'Poor White Hound Dog' = awesome song) and don't recall it being missing on mine but will check pronto wen I get home tonight (Mrs JB is out!!)

I've got a VHS copy as well as a copy recorded from BBC2 years and years back plus a documentary all about Donald Cammell which is very interesting. My biggest coup was picking up a paperback book of it in a back alley shop in Bali or Jakata somewhere on my travels 12 years ago. One of those novels based on the movie kind of books, or visa versa, the story differs in places and seems tamer but it's got a Jagger picture on the front cover. My poster is a BFI one when it was re-released at the cinema, sadly still in it's tube. The magazine Uncut had an early edition with a big piece on the film and history (Ian Brown on the cover for a big Stone Roses feature). Still got that, great text and pics!

Anita Pallenberg, man, hubba hubba!!

(this Perfomance geekery may be better by PM's eh, unless anyone else wants to join in, I could talk all day about it.........Leave a message after the beep. Beep, beep, BEEP!)

Nah, keep it going!

It's pretty dead in here at the moment. Combination of summer - 'The Fair Fortnight!' - and that 'in-between-albums' stage.

So, I love that movie too. Way interested to hear about the soundtrack issues on the DVD as i've been planning on getting that for some time. I'm sure Amazon had it for a couple of £ last time I checked.

I only own - and indeed have only ever owned - just a handful of videos and the prized one is Performance, a widescreen Warners edition from 1997.
(part of the 'Maverick Directors' series, with a free Cammell/Roeg trading card  ).

Be most interested to know which version I have, or if there are parts missing, as I wouldn't know - and there any kind of definitive edition available? (i'm guessing no...)

It's a really weird film - a strange mixture of beauty and violence with a generous pinch of mad psychedelica!
And unlike most films - for me anyway - I can watch it more than once. And yeah, Anita is awesome!! :D

Fuck it. i'm gonna dig out that vid and watch it later. Pray the video player still works!

Oh, I can't mention this film without mentioning the soundtrack. I actually owned the album way before seeing a film and it's just stupendous - one of the all time greats that one - masterful collaborations overseen by Jack Nitzsche. Greatest not-quite-the-Stones song ever! And Merry Clayton as well!

Spiritualized connection? Not really, but the reason I hunted down said soundtrack was due to the inclusion of 'Wake Up N*****' by The Last Poets which I first heard on the now legendary Spaceman Breezblock DJ set from the late 90s...

There's a Spacemen connection as Pete K was asked which soundtrack he'd most loved to have done and this was it. It's a magnificent soundtrack too - Poor White Hound Dog is one the most important songs in the development of my musical tastes - that and Psychic TV's 'Godstar' were largely responsible for me getting into psychedelic music. I took a cassette around with me and used to play PWHD to people saying 'do you know any music that sounds like this?' But very little does. Captain Beefheart's 'Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do' was about the closest I got but it's hardly the same.

To work out which version you have....

There are 2 different soundtracks to the film. The first has the original voices of Harry Flowers (Johnny Shannon) and Laurie (the little girl who mysteriously helps out at Turner's house) and the second has dubbed over cock-er-ney voices for those characters.

Some versions have Joey Maddox's murder cut short so the scene finishes when the gun is fired and misses the 'look wotcha done' exchange after - that scene also includes a tiny clip of young boys fighting. I think a few moments of the sex scene between Pherber and Turner are cut too.

Here's an odd thing to chuck in. I used to have my hair cut by a guy called Andy at a place by Chalk Farm tube - called 'Andy's' inevitably but it's changed hands now and is a more up market salon. I kept thinking he looked like the owner of the porn cinema Chas visits in the film to collect protection money. I talked to Andy and he was one and the same. It's odd to get a buzz out of who is cutting your hair but I certainly did! He told me there were other scenes that were cut involving him and James Fox fighting at the porn cinema and said he remembered the experience vividly and realised what a great film it was. Loaded magazine had an article on Performance and I wrote to them, mentioning Andy and they printed my letter. The very last time I had my hair cut there (about 15 years ago) the letter was pinned to to the wall which made me smile...

I'd estimate that I've watched performance at least 30 times and I constantly find something new - a tiny reference or image that's repeated elsewhere. For instance the Borges book Turner reads from is the same one that Rosebloom is reading in the gangsters car. Also the picture Rosebloom looks at in Tony's bedroom at the end also appears in one of the cupboards in Turner's mansion. It's an endless source of fascination as Donald Cammell crammed so much into the film that would get sad gits like me going for years to come...

We've got to go back... ...and faster'

Wow, great story about 'Andy' there!! I love stuff like that. Glad to hear PWHD is held in such high regard by others too, such an amazing song (and I love the way the French girl Lucy dances to it in the film). The Ry Cooder instrumentals on the soundtrack just sum up that whole Notting Hill stoned vibe perfectly don't they.

You're dead right about picking up little things in it the more you watch it. I'm seen it about the same amount of times as you. The way Harry Flowers arranges his pens and ink pot on his desk is mirrored by Turner in his kitchen when he plays with a knife and fork. They really overlap things like that and play on the whole visa versa thing to wonderful effect. The book thing was one I spotted too, really nice touch.

Luckily the copies I have all have the correct voices, the full shooting scene with Chas and Joey and so. But now I'm wondering if some scenes are wrong on my dvd and I've not noticed them before because I've seen it so many times and my sub conscious just thinks they're in there, hahaha.

Just had some of Performance dvd on the go and can't notice anything wrong with it really. The shriek is there during Jaggers light dance, PWHD sounds just fine but not how it'll compare to my VHS copy BUT FUCK ME I'm playing the Memo From Turner bit now and when Jagger says 'here's to old England' there's no sound for it so you must be right. What a cock up. There's some music missing on that too. Now that's got me really bugged. Is there soundtack missing elsewhere too or just on that scene? Not sure why my copy picks up the shriek though, he only does it the once during that scene right?

Haha, what geekery! Can't imagine they'll ever correct it though do you.

Lots of the music is missing from PWHD. It is definitely just one of the channels. I only spot the cock up on the soundtrack in this sequence - the sad thing this is the climax and greatest moment of the film and they've blown it. I just looked at my copy now and it's wrong. Go and play PWHD from the soundtrack and you'll see what I mean.

Avoid all DVDs including the recent Blu Ray. All feature the botched up soundtrack. It's incredible they can't sort out such a simple error.

There are several VHS editions from years back. Some have different overdubbed voices for Harry Flowers and Lorraine. Some have the end of the death scene cut. Crucially ALL feature the correct intact soundtrack. Just as long as you have the one without the cuts you're OK but it's hard to know which that is. The larger old fashioned Warner Bros box in the UK was a decent copy but the one I watch now is a copy of a TV broadcast a friend sent me. I don't know about the Videodisc as I never used those...

There's a very good - and amusing - Facebook group for Performance if people are as obsessed with that movie as I am...
