I actually figured LAGWAFIS sold 400K.
All the old singles and albums maybe 100K
All the ones after around 200-300K

All the digital DL's I think makes it over 1M

Hahahaha.

Well, just checking the RIAA (recording industry association of america) certification database, Spiritualized does not come up. This means no Spiritualized album has not gone gold (>500k units sold) in America. Not a big surprise there, since I think only two Spz albums have charted in the states (LICD and A&E), and not very high at that.

So going off the worldwide chart positions for their albums, I'd probably guess that they have sold well under 1 million albums/eps/singles. Probably around half that would be my final answer.

Anyways, I'll ask my friends who work in the industry to see if they have some type of database for album sales over the past 20 years. It might be Soundscan, but I don't know if they can give you worldwide totals for artists. We'll see.

US numbers:

Lazer Guided Melodies = 42,622
Pure Phase = 26,884
Ladies and Gents = 116,142
Let it Come Down = 61,323
Amazing Grace = 27,247
Songs in A&E = 24,014
Complete Works 1 = 13,492
Complete Works 2 = 5,935
Abbey Road EP = 6660 (evil)

Total: 324,319

....and they are bigger in Europe.

I stand corrected. Over 1 million would be correct.

Not really in mainland. They have never sold out here. Even in a place that holds 200 people.
Which is pretty sad.

So the US figure counts for roughly half of their sales.

I know the band have never been huge, but those figures are surprisingly low to me.

How so?

They are the Soundscan totals for the band's sales in the US since Soundscan was established ('91).

Wow. 400 000. That is... a lot and not a lot at the same time, if you consider LAGWAFIS' reputation. But I think that's just a rock critic thing, you never know how much an album sold. But for a non-mainstream act over 1 million is a really good statistic and almost half of it being one album. Not bad.

I think the band got a lot from playing live, too. Jason's just completely mad fer it.
W: What are we supposed to do with that?
M: Eat it.
W: Eat it? Fucker’s alive.
M: Yeah, you’ve got to kill it.

I think it's really a rock critic thing. That can blur the actual facts completely and in the end it's out of proportion

I just checked something to have any kind of comparison. For example, The Libertines' second LP sold 72,189 times in the first week! That's bizarre.

While The Libertines were more successful at one point than Spiritualized is very clear, but I think Spiritualized would still gain the higher reputation among rock critics. And Spiritualized just have many songs superior to any Libertines song and I used to love the Libertines a lot.

For what it's worth I recall an article in Q magazine shortly before LICD came out that stated Ladies And Gentlemen had sold "around 100'000" in the UK. Bear in mind this was in 2001.

yes but it's not the critics that buy the records

None as orignially released, although I now own the complete Beatles back catalogue, but nothing else on the UK list. I must admit I'm a bit surprised the Stones never had a top selling album in the UK.

By fuck that is grim reading particulalry from 1980 onwards when I really started to buy records. A particularly (ginger) low being 1991-1992, not that 1990 or 1994 were any better...

nineteen!!

Fuck me.. my taste in music is generic as hell!
I should probably stop listening to spiritualized if they´ve sold less than a million?
oh well..
I have quite enjoyed listening to spz for the last 17 years even though they obviously are kind of crappy according to the record-buyers. High school musical next!

Funnily enough I found my copy of this today and the figure Q quote is "a little over 200,000 worldwide".

Nope, they're shite  . But then so are Mr Collins and Mr Loaf, IMHO. Clearly, my views fly in the face of public opinion given the sales generated by these artistes. Each to their own I suppose.......

Go wash your ears out with soap and then listen to "Holding Back The Years" again... almost as essential an 80s guilty pleasure as I've got in my collection!

OK, I'll do that, just as soon as I've listened to "Wherever I've Laid My Hat", "The Final Countdown" and assorted other gems from the 1980s. OK so I won't really, neither Simply Red (nor The Frantic Elevators for that matter) do anything for me. As an aside, if I want to listen to some 1980's funk from MCR, I'll choose something by A Certain Ratio.
