Look out for them live. They are playing Portland in early November but it looks to me like it is a West Coast only tour.

I think they have had a few changes in their line-up since the "...Flowers" LP.

We'll get them here somehow. They like Detroit and haven't played here in a while. And they know a shop here is pushing their vinyl. One of the Gorrilaz was in here a few days ago and really wanted a copy of the new one because I was playing it in the shop. I tried selling him These Flowers and he declined.
Oh well.

I saw them once and they had a ludicrous amount of people on the stage. Damn fine though.

I saw them live about two years ago...the girl from Sunsplit was still in the band. It was fairly soon after the "These Flowers" album. They came here with Rob Campanella's band, The Quarter After. And yes, there seemed to be a lot of people on the tiny stage and a lot of pedals, wires and just...things everywhere. The Quarter After were very sunshine poppy, LA psych while the A4 wore all black and their style of psychedelia came across much more gritty. But then again, A4 are from Philly, which is a tougher, grittier city than SoCal.

That sounds just like the night I had. Quarter After played first - VERY loudly and far more noisy than on record - followed by A4 who were great but we had to leave after a few songs as it was really late and we had to be up early next day.

And yes Alan - I got that 7" from you many years ago. I thought it was Ok but the album, Introducing (which I think you also linked me to), was what got me hooked. Other stuff between that and These Flowers was patchy, but what I've heard of the new one is pretty damn good.

i love them. ABSOLUTELY LOVE them. I first heard their cover of SP3's "Losing..." on the SP3 tribute album and instantly fell in love with them (for me, its the best cover version i've EVER heard). Their first album "Introducing..." is probably in my top 10 albums of all time favs and is just psych-genius from start to finish.
I admit i was disappointed at first when the follow up came round, but as i grew to love it i could see that they were trying new styles and, for that i cannot fault them. How many people wish their fav bands had stuck to a sound or style?? Probably a few of us, but we know it might get boring ultimately.

I REALLY wish they'd tour the UK and pop up north of the border for a show... i'd love to see them play live.

Sorry if i'm over emotional abotu them, but they are one of the few bands i really look forward to hearing new material from... plus i'm a little inebriated... :D

For a braod taster of their material, i recommend the b-sides & singles collection they made available for download (think it was just download) through their website. Covering '97-'07 it gives a good account of each of the albums, including the sublime cover of the SP3 classic

I have become obsessed to the point I have to stop playing them so much. Except for the King Richard's Collectibles CD which I cant get into. The rest, count me in. Big time.
@Runcible. Did you not think that b-side to their first single was amazing?

I caught their show in San Francisco. The band sounded great, very tight, but perhaps upstaged by the most excellent Lovetones. I wasn't familiar with the Lovetones, but they really impressed me. I liked their psychedelic touches; A#4 sounded more straightforward. Nothing as trippy as their Spacemen 3 cover.

Must say they are the trippiest live band I have ever seen, amazing both times at Carlisle The Brickyard. Support on both shows (2007/2008) from The Quarter After, amazing bill to about 40 Carlisle folk. The projections were stunning, Introducing LP by far the best.

Alan, you were right fucking on about this band. I bought the B-Sides comp you were talking about and I must have played about fifteen times already. More purchases are definitely on the horizon. :D

every record is great. King Richards Collectibles is an odd one. More straightforward 60's pop. Honeyspot is very Byrd-sy and fantastic.

Thank you thank you Spzretent for another amazing top tip.
This band had totally passed me by and I've just spent the last hour watching the sun going down listening to These flowers... Enjoyable to say the least.
Absolutely brilliant, loads of great influences and snatches of records from a massive array. Best thing to meet my ears in a while.
Now where do I get vinyl copies of their stuff?........

So I may be asking a stupid question, but are they still country rock ala Gram Parsons and Mojave 3?

I've only heard their Honeyspot record, but I haven't listened to it for a year or two. It was quite good.

Honeyspot was a new direction for them into country rock.
They are more psychedelic.
The S/t(1st) LP
These Flowers Of Ours and
Hail To The Clear Figurines are much more indicative of their sound.
