The best of 2010 - your lists

Post by runcible »

As we are so close to the end of the year here are my picks of 2010. I haven't heard the Bardo Pond album so obviously can't include it. It's been a very good year for music in my opinion - the most enjoyable for some time.

Album of the year:
Magic Lantern - Platoon

Other great albums:
Serpentina Satellite - Mecanica
Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane - s/t
Gnod/White Hills - Drop Out
Mugstar - Lime
White Hills - s/t
Black Crowes - Croweology

Gig of the year:
CAVE (by a light year - best gig of the last however many years too) at Islington Mill, Salford

Other great nights:
Wooden Shjips at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
The Heads supporting Wooden Shjips at Bush Hall, London
Sun Araw at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
Spectrum at The Harley, Sheffield
White Hills at the Ruby Lounge, Manchester
The Soft Pack at the Cockpit, Leeds

My musical discovery of the year:
Humble Pie (ta Redcloud for that one)

That time again! I agree with you Mark - been a great year for loads of quality music. Some exceptional stuff out in the last year or so... Been a crazy up and down year but I'm happy to report it's ending well. Things happen for a reason!

Anyway, let's go...

My album of the year has to be

Janelle Monae - The Archandroid

Beautiful, beyond psychefunkadelica. That tune 'Tightrope' fucking rocks as well.

Other favourites include

Martina-Topley Bird - Some Place Simple
Grinderman 2
Neil Young - Le Noise
Prince - 20Ten
The Phantom Band - The Wants
Subfocus - Subfocus
MIA - /\/\ /\ Y /\
We Fell To Earth - We Fell To Earth
Steve Mason - Boys Outside
Campbell & Lanegan - Hawk
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Volume 2, Return of The Ankh
Tricky - Mixed Race
Sleigh Bells - Treats

There are probably more but those are the ones that got played a lot on my mp3 player.

Honourary Modern Classic Pop Record

Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster. :D

Also mentions to some of these fantastic old-but-new-to-me records...

Sonny Sharrock - Black Woman
Little Richard's Greatest Hits Recorded Live 1967
Velvet Underground - The Quine Tapes
Phil Spector 74-79
Miles Davis - Prestige recordings box
Prince - One Nite Alone live box
John Lennon - Sometime In New York City

Songs of the year for me are MIA - 'Born Free', Bodyrox feat. Luciana - 'Yeah Yeah' (Ramirez full length & dub versions), Bob Dylan 'I'm Not There' , Nirvana 'Come Unto Death' bootleg....and many many others.

Gigwise a bit fucked this year due to finanical constraints, but overwhelmingly amazing was Courtney Love & Hole at the O2 Academy, and the awesomely heavy Machine Code at the Art School.

Cheers!

To name a few bands that rocked my world this year... Atlas Sound (four CDs worth of material in four days!?), Autolux (their new album is massively underrated), Beach House (probably the most listened-to album of the year), Besnard Lakes, Black Angels, Black Mountain, Brian Eno/David Byrne, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, Dum Dum Girls, Electric Wizard, Gorillaz, Grinderman (best album of the year, obviously), Isobell Campbell/Mark Lanegan, Janelle Monáe (second best album of the year), Jónsi, Kanye West (third best.... I can't believe I'm saying that), Kylesa, LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, The National, Ramesses (best 'metal' album of the year), Robyn, Shannon Wright, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Swans (also the best concert of the year), Third Eye Foundation, White Hills... not to mention that epic Spiritualized performance at Radio City Music Hall!

I'm with BZA - Janelle Monae's The ArchAndroid is definitely my album of the year. So inventive and varied, I can't believe how talented she is. That album is like some wonderful mix of Prince, James Brown, Lauryn Hill, OutKast and a Broadway stage show. Other albums that I've enjoyed this year include, in no particular order:

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr Rager (best hip-hop album I've heard in a long time, although I await Kanye's album for Christmas)
Underworld - Barking
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot... The Son Of Chico Dusty
Robyn - Body Talk Pt.1 & Pt.2 (the second is better than the first, but the first has the amazing Dancing On My Own and Fembot)
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (although the title track is seriously dull, it has Half Life II and Sprawl II, two of my favourite songs of the year)
MIA - /\/\ /\ Y /\ (but only for the second half of the album, including the extra tracks - It Takes A Muscle is horrendous but Tell Me Why and Space are a welcome step away from the wilfully abrasive first half)
Kelis - Flesh Tone
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening (albeit their weakest album, including 45:33, and All I Want is shit, but I Can Change and Home are great and even half-decent LCD is better than most other bands)
Steve Mason - Boys Outside
Jonsi - Go

Favourite gig of the year was last Saturday - Screamadelica live at the Olympia. I also loved seeing Underworld at Glasgow Barrowland the night before, LCD Soundsystem at Glasgow Barrowland in April and in November, Grandmaster Flash, Club 75, 2manydjs and Friendly Fires at the Rockness Festival, Robyn and Kelis two weeks apart in Glasgow in October, Supergrass' Scottish farewell at Glasgow Barrowland, Wu-Tang Clan being shambolic in Glasgow in September, Flight Of The Conchords in Glasgow in May and Jay-Z and Erol Alkan at an otherwise awful T In The Park.

Christ, I'm not sure I'll be ble to contribute well to this thread as I struggle to remember 12 days ago let alone 12 months...

I think I started 2010 with an ear towards disco and mainly compilations which I quickly tired of but it did lead me towards a lot of early proto-house music that seemed to consume me for a while and has sustained throughout the year kinda peaking in the Autumn.

Arthur Russel' stuff as Dinosaur L
Mid '80's Ron Hardy bootlegs
Deep techy House

Alongside this were some minimal wave/cold wave/synth pop finds spurred on by unearthing Ike Yard at the end of '09.
There's always room for POP and of note was the Washed Out EP on Mexican Summer. Rediscovered Bjork' Volta and dipped my toe in the swell of Witch House with Balam Acab and o0o00.

My album of the year is actually a short live recording by the Moritz Von Oswald Trio.

As usual too offset my consumption of beats and bleeps is a good dose of...Noise, i guess.
Yellow Swans back catalogue got airing as did Pete Swanson new long player. Again Type Records seemed to draw me in and found the Indignant Senility releases to my tastes.

I spent the majority of the year listening to mixes and therefore I'm hoping that the Wire best of 2010 will lead me to something decent when it comes through the letterbox.

I am interested to discover one act this year and it is Vomir; a Parisian Harsh Wall Noise (HWN) act. I think he is searching through the static, low end, mid and treble to find the melody that exists without planning. The Noise that exists without creation.

Also, can I just say that single of the year has been posted in another thread; Theo Parrish reworking Lil Louis & Amerie.

Favourite albums:

Section 25: Retrofit
Mogwai: Special Moves
Brian Jonestown Massacre: Who Killed Sgt Pepper
The Heads: Koko
Wooden Shjips: Vol 2
Brendan Perry: Ark
The Fall: Your Future Our Clutter

I can't believe that i'm nominating two live albums and 2 singles collections in my end of year list. Partly this is due to the fact that I spent most of this year getting over cancer so didn't listen to much new stuff and partly because 2010 was one of the weakest years I can recall.

Old stuff I've picked up/enjoyed on this year:
The Heads: Relaxing with....(re) Release of the year by a country mile IMHO
Alphastone: Life's a Motorway
Bowery Electric (all their albums but the S/T album is a gem)
Damon and Naomi: The Sub Pop Years

Low points: The MGMT album, anything released/done by the former members of New Order, particularly the Bad Lieutenant album and Peter Hook's decision to tour Unknown Pleasures. The absence of a new Spectrum Album

Album of the year:
Eels-End Times
Nothing comes remotely close to it. It's beauty and its deep emotional pain summed up in 14 incredible songs.

Other notables:
Sleepy Sun-Fever
Black Crowes-Croweology
Eels-Tomorrow Morning
The Volta Sound-Floppy (this might actually have been released in the eleventh hour of 2009)

Gig of the Year:
Black Crowes- December 3, 2010 Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall; Portland, Oregon
The Eels gig in October was special but this three hour extravaganza was phenomenal. What was once a staple on the live circuit (bands chugging away for 2-3 hours) has become a rarity these days. The ghosts of the Allman Brothers 1970 Fillmore East shows were resurrected on 12/3. An absolute scorcher that went on and on.

Other notable gigs:
Wilco 2/9/10
Gomez 3/15/10

Iron Maiden 6/22/10 (in Seattle with my 10 year old son who LOVES Maiden...it was his birthday present. I saw Maiden on their 'Number of the Beast' Tour now here I was with my son watching them 29 or so years later! Good father/son time).
Eels 10/8/10
Sleepy Sun 7/7/10

Most disappointing gig of the year:
Brian Jonestown Massacre 6/17/10
Some fresh new songs were added into the mix, which was good as the band have toured the same setlist for far too long. However, on this night (tour?) the six different electric guitars (inc. bass) made for a nightmare at the mixing desk. What could have been powerful was instead a mess on the ears. It was also the end of a tour and the band lacked intensity compared to previous times.

albums by Sleepy sun, BRMC, Giant Sand, Mogwai (live), Besnard Lakes, Moon Duo, Caribou, Sun Araw, Black Angels, The heads (re-issue), Deerhunter, Exit Calm

Gigs
Sleepy Sun (Manchester Band On The Wall), Black Angels (sheps bush, not Black Mountain who i didnt like on the night), Moon Duo (salford trinity church), BRMC (manchester academy), She keeps bees (dulcimers), Wooden shjips (wolverhampton), Exit Calm (fact 251 Manchester)

poor gigs Black Mountain @ The same Black Angels gig, poor album and just basic hair metal/rock crap (love the first 2 albums though) and Interpol (Manch Apollo) simply boring

probably more highlights but i cant remember. Either way its been a good year muically, especially on the Underground scene

I don't like the new Black Mountain album, either. I prefer the Pink Mountaintops stuff, but I don't think I'll ever be a huge fan of any of his work.

Not bought too many new albums this year but on the best of list would be......

Sun Araw - On Patrol
Grinderman - Grinderman 2
Moon Duo - Escape
Higamos Hogamos - Atomised Pt 1
Fire In My Bones - compilation

Yep, the Higamos have had two new cd's out via their own website this year. Only a fiver each and both really good. http://www.higamoshogamos.com/Higamos_Hogamos.html Well worth picking up at that price. They extend into new sounds on both. Both come in hand printed cardboard cd sleeve envelopes.

I shouldn't nick cd's from the front of mags but the idea of paying nearly a fiver for something like Uncut/Mojo when the magazine content is below par is kind of galling. Never do it from an independant newsagent though. It's not a regular thing either your honour, please don't send me to the gallows!

Too lazy to type it all out again   , so just copied yours and tried to add any others from this year, but all i could think about was that "Voices..." one. I did binge on the rest of the "Voices..." stuff, but since they are technically not from this year, i refrained from adding... (same with a few others)

Albums:

Set Phazer To Stun – The Time & Space Machine – The best thing I’ve heard this year. A great mixture of psychedelia, krautrock, balearica, and the track Midsummer Night would not sound out of place on Lazer Guided Melodies.

Congratulations – MGMT – I probably only really got this because of Sonic Boom’s production and love what he and the band have achieved on this.

13 Most Beautiful – Dean & Britta – Again, Sonic Boom is all over the two discs on this album and there are some great songs to match the carefully chosen subjects

Volume 3 – The Time & Space Machine – The third instalment of re-edits by Richard Norris of rare psychedelic tracks.

Listen To The Voices – Sly Stone In The Studio – Some rare Sly & The Family Stone unreleased tracks and at last, all the singles which were released on Sly’s short lived Stone Flower label, finally available on cd. These singles were originally brought out in order to fund the expenses incurred during the relatively long process of recording and re-recording There’s a Riot Going On.

Singles Volume 9 – James Brown – This long running project of collecting all the A & B sides of singles chronologically released, now arrives at the period when Mr Brown brought out his two best albums – The Payback and Hell. Also includes singles on the People label which came out under the JB’s / Lyn Collins etc...

I’m New Here – Gil Scott Heron - Haunting and moving, sung and spoken vocals, with a backing track that suits Gil’s voice and lyrics. A remix of this is due out early next year.

Gigs:

Screamadelica Live @ Olympia Saturday – Primal Scream – one of the best performances I’ve seen from the Scream in 30+ gigs and the amount of work and effort that went into these shows was evident. They have definitely raised the bar.

Funkadelic @ Paradiso Amsterdam – Still doing their upmost to tear the roof off the mother

13 Most Beautiful @ Barbican – Dean & Britta – Fascinating background stories and great music to accompany the well chosen screen tests.

Julian Cope @ Thekla Bristol – Excellent solo set. Still has a great voice, still genuinely funny and always a legend.

Music Documentaries

When You’re Strange – The Doors. - Johnny Depp’s passionate narration never hides what a fan he is of the band’s music and there is some great rare footage including clips from the infamous HWY film.

Coming Back For More – The Search For Sly Stone. The long patient search is eventually rewarded with Sly’s first interview on screen for years. Again, there is some great footage, though tantalisingly short, of live performances.

Love Is The Message - A Night At The Gallery. A group of students from The New York Film school were initially invited down to Nicky Siano’s club to film a one off Saturday night. They ended up coming back every week for eight months. An excellent insight into the underground disco club scene of the mid seventies.

Add Citay's 'Dream Get Together' to the pile. Totally sublime dreamy psychedelic pop with sunshine all over everything. How did I manage to miss these guys before?
