Stones-Cocksucker Blues

Post by MODLAB »

I found this to be really good! The mix of musical talent and debauchery is pretty damn amazing.
I see why the Stones would not want this released but yet on the other hand it should.
Some parts are up there with the Led Zep fish stories.

I've only seen the clip of Keith Richards passing out on a groupie! lol Nice.

I've always wanted the film 'Gimme Shelter' - the documentary on their 1969 world tour.

I have always resisted due to being scared that Jagger would annoy me! lol

Gimme Shelter is more about the Altamont disaster than anything else. The build up, the carnage and then the death.

I've seen the clip where the band stops playing and Jagger tells the crowd to "cool it". According to wikipedia they actually caught the murder on film - which was used in evidence. I presume that you don't actually see it? I'm a sensitive boy  lol

Apparently George "Star Wars" Lucas was also a camera operator at the gig - but his camera jammed so they couldn't use any of his footage.

I always thought it was only available on R1 DVD?

Yes you do - very clearly. Meredith Hunter, the victim, is visible earlier as things intensify and everything gets chaotic. The bad trip atmosphere is obvious - a fat naked woman pushing through the corwd and a guy flipping out on the stage before being hassled a Hells Angel - both obviously on acid. At various points it's packed in front of the stage and then the crowd disperses to escape the beatings the Angels were dishing out with pool cues - you see all that. Then Meredith Hunter runs towards the stage and you can quite clearly see he's holding a gun - he gets stabbed in the back of the head by one of the Angels. It's dark but you see it all. The Angels had this as their justification for attacking Hunter and to some degree they have a point, although whether Hunter was defending himself from the Angels attack or going to shoot Mick jagger is impossible to say. It's pretty extreme and not good at all.

Quite why the Angels felt the need to knock Jefferson Airplane singer Marty Balin out cold, beat on large members of the crowd and be generally horrible to everyone is odd. They were an important part of Haight Ashbury - often helping set up events - and they had a good relationship with a lot of the hippes in 67-68. A certain amount of tension appeared when Sonny Barger, Oakland Angels president (and still a Phoenix Angel to this day), supported the Vietnam war and offered to send a platoon of Angels out there to fight.

It's a fascinating film but one which shows the shitty bottom of the 60's barrel. Highly recommended...

Thanks Runcible! Although, my previous experince of the shitty bottom of the 60's barrel were my mother's collection of Tom Jones records! :P Some may argue these were actually more horrific than Altamont. Joke!

Apparently it is being released on 21st September 2009 on R2 DVD!
